Nearly half of Apple Mac users are over 55?
Thursday, November 30, 2006 - 11:29 AM EST

"Older folks use Macs too! A whole heck of a lot of them, actually," Jacqui Cheng reports for Ars Technica.

"Mac users 'enjoy' the stereotype of being young, hip, and annoyingly artistic at times—I mean, after all, look at Justin Long! However, much to the surprise of many, a rather large percentage of Mac users are over the age of 55. As in, a larger percent of Mac users are over 55 than any other computer company," Cheng reports.

Cheng reports, "46 percent of Mac users are over 55, according to the MetaFacts 2006 Home PC Brand Profile Report, with only 25.2 percent of PC users being over 55."

guess with age comes wisdom. I must be an early bloomer...tho 55 is probably not too too far off...geez i feel old

Nov 30, 06 - 11:35 am Comment from: ABQ Peter

i just turned 60; i have been using apple stuff since the lisa.

Nov 30, 06 - 11:38 am Comment from: Teddy

wisdom comes with age - as does spare money.

Nov 30, 06 - 11:39 am Comment from: x

maybe its long-time users, but maybe its also newer users that find the mac "just works". plus you figure PC's have the younger crowd that are into PC games.

Nov 30, 06 - 11:41 am Comment from: Mikentosh

Old Guys Rule!

Nov 30, 06 - 11:46 am Comment from: The Big O

I just turned 60 also - first apple product for me was an apple II+ with an added language card - then a mac plus, IIsi, 7500, imac, ibook, G5 1.8, powerbook, G5 dualcore 2.3, mac mini, 17 macbook pro. Next who knows. apple all the way through ups and downs. Hve had a couple of pc's for needed apps along the way but macs rule and windows drool.
also had a couple newtons the 2100 best - we need another one.

Nov 30, 06 - 11:49 am Comment from: gRen

Going on 41. Proud Apple user since 1990 (still have my IIci somewhere). smile

Nov 30, 06 - 11:50 am Comment from: G-Spank

Well let's hope this statistic is changing rapidly...

Nov 30, 06 - 11:54 am Comment from: CharlieBing

Interesting stats... 'x' is probably right, there's older people going for the better/easier tehnology (and likely moving from Windows machines). And of course, there's all those boomers like me, who discovered Macs early, like 'ADQ Peter', and who never left. It might be interesting to know the age spreads for people who are converting to Macs...

Nov 30, 06 - 11:56 am Comment from: Dave

I'm 67 and I've been using Macs since the first Color Mac. Still have it, in a box. My iMac G5 keeps me happy now.

Nov 30, 06 - 12:00 pm Comment from: etr

that would explain the demographics of our mac users group...

Nov 30, 06 - 12:02 pm Comment from: ldm

57 and a mac lover since 1984. The only interesting computer before the Mac was the Tandy Model 100 laptop.

Nov 30, 06 - 12:03 pm Comment from: Darkness

It doesn't surprise me that there are older Mac users. (After all, Darkness is older than time itself...) What does surprise me is the apparently large number of older MDN readers. For some reason I thought this site was full of younger types. Must be the commentary. :-D

Nov 30, 06 - 12:05 pm Comment from: i

49 and still breathing

mdn - days?

Nov 30, 06 - 12:07 pm Comment from: Mike R

52 and counting .... switched to Macs this year and never looked back!

Nov 30, 06 - 12:10 pm Comment from: Pablito

I'm 43 and I'm sure I'll still be using Macs when I'm 55. I really "mean" that.

Nov 30, 06 - 12:10 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

Doesn't surprise me.

This stuff is expensive!

Seriously, I'm pushing 50. In addition to numerous small businesses I also have lots of individual clients and many are older people.

Interestingly enough, and this is not a joke, I've had 4 clients die on me in the last 6 weeks.

1 Massive Heart attack. (During sex change surgery) 50 yrs. old.
1 Disease I can't pronounce or spell
1 Breast Cancer
1 "Natural causes

I also have older clients who are thriving. One is the 75 yr old patriarch of a family owned law firm. Just bought all new 24" iMacs for the 20 or so attorneys in the firm, and 20" iMacs for all the paralegals. It's all I can do to get this guy out of World of Warcraft. He insists on meeting with me in there.

Nov 30, 06 - 12:11 pm Comment from: ron

Seventy-three and still whacking away on my Mac, and have been since the start. Since Windows was just a hole in the wall.

Nov 30, 06 - 12:23 pm Comment from: Semaphore Jones

Could it be that a Mac extends your life?

Nov 30, 06 - 12:25 pm Comment from: Holy Sh*t!!!

This is why 46% misses Zune Tang's satire!

Nov 30, 06 - 12:30 pm Comment from: Jeffrey

Then if this is true, Apple better aim for the younger market... old people die.

And i'm MUCH closer to 55..

Nov 30, 06 - 12:40 pm Comment from: Always Right

47.

Nov 30, 06 - 12:50 pm Comment from: Old Fart

I'll be 60 next September and have been using Apples & Macs since the 80's, beginning with a IIe in my work as an educator. My district went to Windows PC's in the 90's, but I was able to talk them into keeping and using Macs in the Fine Arts areas. I'm now retired and it's a G5 20" iMac and an older G3 PowerBook. Next will be an Intel powered MacBook or a 24" iMac. The only problem is that they don't wear out like PC's. I just gave away my old PowerMac 6500 to a very grateful young teacher.

Nov 30, 06 - 12:51 pm Comment from: Micro Me

"Nearly half of Apple Mac users are over 55".......... and proud of it!

Nov 30, 06 - 12:52 pm Comment from: Angelus

34 and using Apple since the II+ in the 5th grade when we could sign up for 30-minute slots to play Oregon Trail. I did fall away to the Dark Side from 1996-2002 but that was due to work requirements. It was funny because I didn't even know how to use a PC and someone had to show me where the "START" button was. I had more computer problems than I care to remember. Came back to a TiBook 667 in April 2002 and no problems since.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:01 pm Comment from: TowerTone

44, and I have been using Macs since the original Intel iMac 20". Matter of fact, I'm still using it...

Nov 30, 06 - 01:02 pm Comment from: Shady

I just bought an iMac recently (my first Mac ever actually... call me a "switcher") and my father (age 60) loved it. So much, in fact, that just this week he bought one too!

All it takes is for someone to SEE what Macs are all about. He has been frustrated with his Windows PC for years. He just wanted something that "just worked" and would allow him to do basic tasks without getting in his way - he switched without hesitation.

Young or old - Macs work for everyone. I know I'll never look back!

Nov 30, 06 - 01:09 pm Comment from: DanTheMan

68 years here. I get my heart started each morning by flipping on my new 24" iMac. That'll wake anybody up!

Been using Macs since 1990, starting with an SE-30.Use a PC w/ XP at work & can't wait to get home each night.

Just burned my first CD off iTunes last night. I feel 10 years younger!

Nov 30, 06 - 01:09 pm Comment from: eMax

Maybe it just takes that long for people to "see the light" and get fed up with Windows bugs and viruses etc...

Im 24, and ive used an Apple since my Apple IIe in 1988 when i was 6!

Nov 30, 06 - 01:09 pm Comment from: G4Dualie

53 with a soft spot for the ol' luggable SE.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:10 pm Comment from: Always Right

Ok, let's get some more demographics on MacDailyNews readers.

1. You MOST closely relate to- A). Austin Powers B). Dr. Evil

2. ZuneTang is serious- A). agree B) disagree

3. You know how the "popcorn" and "baked potato" settings on your microwave actually work, you don't think it is "magic"- A) true B) false

Nov 30, 06 - 01:10 pm Comment from: Micro Me

Jeffrey has a point though. No doubt Apple is acutely aware of this demographic inconvenience.

Most of us old farts have been using Macs for years (1985) and, unless Apple does something really stupid, are captive customers till death.

It thus make sense for Apple to strongly target the young.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:13 pm Comment from: Micro Me

Better admit my age I guess....fifty mumble.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:18 pm Comment from: Buster

WTF....you cannot be hip when over 55? What kind of crap is that? I just hit 50 and mykids tell me that all the neighbourhood kids like me BECAUSE I am hip....well actually I transliterated their term "immature" into meaning hip.

using Macs sine 1986.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:22 pm Comment from: pete

Been using a Mac for over 10 years-never went with Windows. I am 56 years and I must say the user experience has been quite enjoyable.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:27 pm Comment from: TowerTone

A R

1)A
2)B
3)π

Nov 30, 06 - 01:28 pm Comment from: DJ

Ah yes, but with age cometh hipdom, mountain biking and canoe trips out of school vacation times!

Actually not the latter just yet -- as a *mature* Dad, one sprog is still at school, ho hum.

Still, just turned 60 and cruisin' with Macs that include this MBP and an iMac G5.

Talking of age, an old 145b lurks in the airing cupboard and an SE/30 in the loft. Both of 'em still work OK.

Best regards to all you older Macheads wink

Nov 30, 06 - 01:34 pm Comment from: MacRaven

I a good chunk of us who are Steve's age, started with his Macs when they were cutting edge in the early tech days, and never saw a reason to switch to a PC. Now the rest of the world is catching up to us.

My count for Mac users over 50 that I personally know, is 28. And about another 30 are between 30 and 50.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:36 pm Comment from: John Rip van Winkel

Just turned 67.
Mac user since 1985.

Looking forward to iTV
Just got my 7th switcher hooked up with broadband.

I think that's not bad for a sexy-genarian.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:37 pm Comment from: Buster

Always Rights:

Shouldn't it be

1. You MOST closely relate to- A). Herman Munster B). Lindsay Lohan

2. ZuneTang is a dork- A). agree B) agree

3. You know how "scripts" and "avi to mp4 conversion" work on your computer. You don't think it is "magic"- A) true B) false

4. You are surprised to learn that just by visiting a site on the web, that that site swill send you a cookie. You wonder if it has wheat, nuts or other allergens in it. A) true B) false

Nov 30, 06 - 01:38 pm Comment from: BuriedCaesar

I just turned 40 (yes - on top of the hill!) and my father is a recent switcher (thank the Lord) - he's helping to push up that median age, that's for sure!

Nov 30, 06 - 01:41 pm Comment from: Big Al

Someone just over 55 now was only just over 23 when the first Mac was sold. Macs have always captured young buyers, it's just that most of them never switch to another system but remained loyal to Macs.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:43 pm Comment from: rancher

59 - using a Mac since 84. The Mac made my ad agency a fast, smooth creative shop - no IT guy EVER hired. Networking was a breeze, wireless a 15 minute install. Yeah - I'm an oldie - and get off my lawn you young kids!

Nov 30, 06 - 01:47 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

You bet your ass sonny boy. I'm 48, or so, and have been using Macs since 1985 - And proud of it too.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:48 pm Comment from: MacDaddy

I am 32 now... I started with an ColorClassic as soon as it came out.

Nov 30, 06 - 01:53 pm Comment from: gwm

Sixty. MDN Word: french. Soisante

Nov 30, 06 - 02:13 pm Comment from: grok

I started using macs back in 18 and 37, through the gold rush, the war, the crash of '29, another war, the depression, Elvis, walking on the moon, disco, and Pokemon.

What time is it? Beavers and ducks. I have to crap.

Nov 30, 06 - 02:19 pm Comment from: ron

I carried my Lisa on my back to school in the snow-six miles. Uphill both ways.
It was called a backtop in those days-not a laptop.

MW- gone, as in - gone are those days.

Nov 30, 06 - 02:22 pm Comment from: Eric24601

28 here. Older guys are hot!!!

Nov 30, 06 - 02:33 pm Comment from: Sheridan

16 here. Mac user since jan 2005

Nov 30, 06 - 02:33 pm Comment from: Raymond from DC

Some were smart enough to "see the light" decades ago, and thus are part of the older Apple demographic. Some were knocked off the path, but have found their way back.

But the next generation is already on the right path, at least here in the US. Incoming college students use Macs at a much higher percentage than the general population, especially at prestige universities. They will push the trend as they enter the work force. They will use what they know in the businesses they build, and push their future employers in the right direction. So even as older Mac users retire (we lost two of our small community in the last two years), they are replaced in greater numbers. The future is bright.
