“Netflix’s Canada launch has become famous, not just for the launch itself, or even for the fact that Canadian users are getting a better deal than the U.S. (more on that later). Rather, it’s because some of the really, really happy onlookers at the event were actors,” Michael Santo reports for Examiner.com.

“It wasn’t just that the onlookers were eager; it was that the onlookers were so eager that drew suspicion,” Santo reports. “Eventually, the information leaked about the actors, and the reception for that news, as opposed to Netflix, was not good.”

Etan Vlessing interviewed Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings in Toronto asking, “Are you concerned that American Netflix subscribers will look north and ask for the same discount Canadians get at $7.99?”
Hastings: How much has it been your experience that Americans follow what happens in the world? It’s something we’ll monitor, but Americans are somewhat self-absorbed.

MacDailyNews Take: Not smart, Reed.

This is a constant irritant of mine. US companies charging US customers more than foreign customers is BS….

It’s sad but true. Most American’s don’t pay attention to anything outside the country. It’s shocking how much Canadians know about America yet American’s seem to have a basic lack of knowledge about Canada. And we’re right next door!

May not be smart. But history will prove him right or wrong…
…right after I watch it on Netflix!

Dumb statement indeed.

I bet over reaction. In the fact that we get DVD mail and Canada doesn’t which is why they get the cheaper rate. It would be nice to pay $2 less for streaming only though.
A douche comment none the less.

to our friendly neighbours south of the border:
don’t worry that you’re paying more than us – the selection of available movies up here on Netflix Canada is currently TERRIBLE compared to what you can find in the US Netflix site!
so Canadians are getting a LOT less for the money. believe me, it’s true.

What’s a Canada? Is that in New Jersey?

ET: Actually, for the most part we pay more for the same thing you guys do in US. This is a rare case of the reverse being true.

Apple charges less for music too. Americans are richer than canadians as we have to pay higher. Think of it as a compliment. Netflix charges more because they know you can afford it.

Are Americans too self absorbed? An arguable point but I have had a lot of americans tell me they agree with that. During the 2 years I lived in California, you wouldn’t have ANY idea that Canada even existed. Hell hockey scores came after local high school football scored on the radio.
Anyway, I find it interesting to see one of the rare cases where the US pays more for something than Canada. I do mean rare. Free trade has not been good to the Canadian consumer.

Not exactly a true statement, since we get one DVD in addition to streaming. Worth the extra $1/month in my opinion.

Apple charges Canadians for the Apple TV C$119, versus USD $99, while the C$ is worth $0.97 right now.
I’m buying one anyway, but it’s almost a 20% premium, the cost of being a Canadian in Canada. As for mailing DVDs, zip.ca does that and the system works well; we even have excellent postal service. Still and all it will be fun to see how the new service from Netflix works up here; it’s just that as I am using a U.S. based satellite service for my Internet, they think I’m in the U.S. Having a short attention span, I sent them a note to rectify this, if they can.
