New ‘highly critical’ Office flaw embarrasses Microsoft
Wednesday, April 13, 2005 - 02:00 PM EDT

"A day after monthly patch day, Microsoft has confirmed it is investigating an unpatched security hole in Office that could allow system access. The vulnerability has been labelled 'highly critical' by security firm Secunia. It exists in Microsoft's Jet Database Engine, and can be exploited to execute arbitrary code by tricking users into opening a specially designed '.mdb' file in Microsoft Access, according to Secunia. Exploit code for the vulnerability has already been posted to a public mailing list, the security company has warned," Scarlet Pruitt writes for IDG News Service. "Microsoft criticised disclosure of the vulnerability, saying that the commonly accepted practice is to report a threat to the vendor first so a patch can be developed if necessary before the exploit code gets distributed."

Full article and linkto the advisory here.

MacDailyNews Take: Another day, another exploit in Windowsland. Some thing never change.

We used the word "embarrasses" from the original article's headline because it made us laugh; having tried to use their software, we seriously doubt Microsoft ever had any capacity for embarrassment.

For our Windows-only friends, there is a better way, so for more information about smoothly adding a safe, secure, powerful, and fun Mac OS X machine to your computing arsenal, please click here. If we may be so forward, you might want to take a look at Apple's new Mac Mini which starts at just US$499 — it just might be the perfect machine for you. And don't forget to bump the RAM up to 512MB, you'll want it.

Whew...thank god there was only one...

Apr 13, 05 - 03:15 pm Comment from: Triumph

Yeh-heh-heh-heh-hesssssss.

Could someone tell me . . . is Ballmer himself actually writing the code with his own sweaty hands nowadays? This is embarrassing for Microsoft, and as a result . . .

I poop on them . . .

yet again.

Apr 13, 05 - 03:42 pm Comment from: Come on

MDN,
You have no Windows only friends. I doubt you elitist bastards have ever even used a windows computer.

Apr 13, 05 - 03:57 pm Comment from: Steve Ballmer

Triumph: I SO DO NOT WRITE CODE!

And this article by MDN is nothing short of libelous: This flaw SO DOES NOT EMBARRASS us!

Apr 13, 05 - 03:58 pm Comment from: Chris

OI!

Apr 13, 05 - 04:01 pm Comment from: Elitist Bastard

Come on, Come on: Is that a trick question?

You know full well that "us[ing] a windows computer" is impossible!

Apr 13, 05 - 04:12 pm Comment from: Bill Gates

By the way, how do you'all like our new icon for windows?????

You can view it here: http://www.techworld.com/images/news/3474/windows-patch.gif

Apr 13, 05 - 04:13 pm Comment from: Steve Ballmer

Billy, Billy, let me fix that for you:

You can view it here: <a >New Windows Icon</a>

And remember I don't code.

Apr 13, 05 - 04:15 pm Comment from: whelmed

eh. Unless it a vulnerability that has actually been exploited then I agree with MS. This isn't a new virus, it's theoretical. Remember when Symantec did the same?

Apr 13, 05 - 04:17 pm Comment from: Bill Gates

no wonder, we need a new coder:

You can view it here: New Windows Icon

Apr 13, 05 - 04:20 pm Comment from: Steve Ballmer

Billy, Billy, I am a very busy man, leave me alone, and stop correcting my code, you are no longer the chief programmer here.

Apr 13, 05 - 04:26 pm Comment from: Avoman

Microsoft, in a brilliant application of the theory of evolution, has enlisted 1000 monkeys - locked in a room - to randomly write code for their new Longhorn OS.

"It only took a few weeks for 100 monkeys to write XP" said Steve Ballmer. "Now that we have DOUBLE the number of monkeys, it should go very fast and have way more features!" And to inspire the monkeys to further heights of productivity, Ballmer has threatened to do his famous "Monkey Dance."

Apr 13, 05 - 04:42 pm Comment from: macman

Come on,

WRONG! I work in a Windows environment all day long (MS SQL, Visual Studio .NET C#, etc...) and I can't wait to get home to my Macs and do something creative (iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, etc...) besides writing abstracted Windows code that anyone can do these days.

Apr 13, 05 - 04:55 pm Comment from: Michael

what is it with people who decry those promoting a superior product as "elitist"? what's elitist about a product that just works??? what the hell, why would I want to work with anything that exposes me and my work to downtime, identify theft, and pain/aggravation.

it's amazing how people have to resort to the "elitist" claim when evidently, no other criticisms work.

I have worked on everything from VAX/VMS to Unix to Windows 3.1 to XP Pro SP 2, from Mac OS 6.0 to 10.3.8. What's is elitist about me choosing the best, most reliable platfrom that does exactly what I want it to do, no questions asked? are people embarrassed for "choosing" Windows, then?

Apr 13, 05 - 05:00 pm Comment from: Elitist Bastard

<clenched teeth>Micheal, Micheal, Miiicheallll</clenched teeth> you should know that it is System 6.0 and not Mac OS 6.0.

Elitist Bastard

Let's do lunch sometime

Apr 13, 05 - 06:19 pm Comment from: BuriedCaesar

Sadly, this likely won't make news in the M$ world or even the mainstream press (one in the same?), because there are already more than 90,000 other exploits, vulnerabilities, security holes, viruses, trojans, etc., etc., etc., for the wintel set, so, what's one more? BFD

Just one more inconvenience for the pc users. In whose company was I until just 8 months ago when I finally got my boss to allow me to trash the xp machine on my desk for a Mac.

I escaped! Have always used a Mac at home, however, so can't really consider myself a "switcher"...

Apr 13, 05 - 10:05 pm Comment from: mike

playing the devil's advocate here.. can we trust Secunia?

They seem to be full of shite..

Apr 13, 05 - 10:30 pm Comment from: Thorpedo

Well said Michael ... I'm not elitist (except when I'm taking the piss out of someone ...) and I've used machines from the paper tape, punch card days to the current CD/DVD fed crop ... the perfect combination of all of the machines (with a few supercomputers amongst them) I've had the joy (or non-joy) to use doesn't quite exist but Mac OS X platforms come pretty close ... enough to make me happy ... and with my computer hardware pedigree (?) ...I've become a fussy hard to please sod! Of course I can use a slide-rule too if I had too ... 8-)

MW is subject ... hmmm ... is that the verb or the noun? Or should I not subject you gentle folk to that subject?

Apr 14, 05 - 02:19 am Comment from: retro cat

What a fscking joke Microsoft it.

And to think people actually believe the "we do just as much quality as everyone else, it's just that we are #1, so we're the biggest target.

What a fscking joke.

Apr 14, 05 - 02:36 am Comment from: recently exploited

and in todays news, microsoft has created an exploit to address the exploit that was recently exploited as a result of an exploit that microsoft created earlier today.

Apr 14, 05 - 04:49 am Comment from: Macaday

Come on: Actually you may find there is a huge wealth of PC experience in these forums. I for one used and promoted Windows for 10 years until 1999. I saw the writing on the wall for Windows and was tired of its bossy do it its way way of working. I switched to Apple and have never once looked back. When I do a job for companies using Windows I despair for everyone who is stuck with using it.
