New mystery 4th-gen Apple iPod nano 4GB units show up on store shelves
Wednesday, September 17, 2008 - 12:06 PM EDT

"Now this is an interesting development. According to two separate tipsters (with two sets of photos) Apple has released a third version of the new multi-hued iPod nano to the world -- a 4GB model. As there's been no announcement from the company, and there was certainly no mention of it at the 'Let's Rock' event, this is quite a head-scratcher. According to sources (and a Dutch retailer's site), the models are available in all nine colors and are priced at €119 (or about $168)," Joshua Topolsky reports for Engadget.

Topolsky updates the article:
The UK's Pocket-lint got hold of an Apple spokesperson who told them Apple "made a limited number of 4GB iPod nanos for some international markets, but this is not one of our main configurations."

Maybe this is only for an overseas market?

Most likely they had some leftover 4GB NAND flash and decided to make a limited run of the new nanos to use it up on those damn furreners.

Drop the shuffle price and have a $99 4gig iPod nano. With the nano priced at $150 you get so much more for the $229 iPod Touch...only $80 more. At $99, it serves well to buy both, one cherished mobile web/app computer, and one super-mobile get sweaty, throw around, quick song and media player, all for $350 after tax. Anyone else see the potential?

Yes, I was in Amsterdam earlier this week and saw the 4 Gig models at an Apple retailer there. They were in silver and black and sold for 139 Euros or $196.

Hey, nand to get rid of as its all going to 8 gig and money coming in too. Plus its cheaper for those who are looking at a promo device.

Just a thought.

@Jacob

yeh... prolly just some leftover RAM they wanted to get rid of, hence the 'limited availability'.

drmac: €139 for a 4 GB nano??? The 8 GB nano sells for €139 in the dutch Apple Store.

Dutch Apple store? Is that the one with the tasty, crumbly roof?

"Is that the one with the tasty, crumbly roof?"

They should put an Apple Store next to an Amsterdam coffee shop (where all the clocks go, "BONG!"). That should boost impulse buying.
