New York Times mentions ‘impending Apple slate’
Monday, October 26, 2009 - 12:58 PM EDT

Apple StoreThe New York Times' executive editor, Bill Keller, spoke at a meeting of The Times digital staff last week, Zachary M. Seward reports for Neiman Journalism Lab.

"Video of the meeting, which Denise Warren, general manager of NYTimes.com declared 'off the record,' was posted on an internal Times server and provided to us," Seward reports.

So much for "off the record," as Seward has posted a full transcript of Keller’s remarks which include this little tidbit:

We need to figure out the right journalistic product to deliver to mobile platforms and devices. I’m hoping we can get the newsroom more actively involved in the challenge of delivering our best journalism in the form of Times Reader, iPhone apps, WAP, or the impending Apple slate, or whatever comes after that.

Full article here.

Here's the video (Apple slate remark begins at the 8:18 mark):

More evidence of extensive digital publishing... Oh, and probably contracts! That means it must really be imminent!

"Denise Warren, general manager of NYTimes.com declared (it) 'off the record'".

Meant to say "off the slate"..

According to popular sources of idle speculation, rumor has it that the iSlate from Apple will soon be followed by an iSchist from MS.

And M$ is iDoooooomed!

Oct 26, 09 - 01:16 pm Comment from: Spark

Bill Keller believes it is coming, just like I do. Bill Keller doesn't KNOW it's coming, just like I don't.

Oct 26, 09 - 01:44 pm Comment from: dijonaise

Oh yeah, Bill knows it's coming...
He and Steve are on a first name basis. You know they have already created a "skunkworks" to get the NYT ready for a subscription service on the new iSlate

I like the name "Slate" as opposed to "iTablet", "Tablet" or other names. It would distinguish the Apple product from all of the also-rans that are coming to compete.

Next year's tax return = an Apple Slate.

...and it will cost $600.
Not.

Everyone knows it's coming. It's kind of funny to watch the industry. Apple's hardware competitors are waiting to see what to copy. And MS underestimates it. Ballmer's going to sit there cackling while it bombs him. "We've sold 100's of million of netbooks. They've sold zero. We've made consumers suffer with our $#!%%& OS. They haven't shipped a netbook or tablet yet. I like our chances."

MS will make small $ per netbook license, while Apple enjoys all the margin. But MS will make it up in volume... just Ballmer makes out at the Home Town Buffet.

But didn't Ballmer say on the Engadget show that publishing was dead.

Oct 26, 09 - 02:49 pm Comment from: ron

Tran - slate.

Oct 26, 09 - 02:52 pm Comment from: iStepchild

Apple's already killing with their tablet...it's called the iPod Touch.
I would scale it up 2)%, along with the UI, add the EyeSight and iChat, price it at $399, and then leave it alone and let the rumors and poopers continue. A big tablet is cumbersome and too warm...a slightly bigger feature-rich iPod Touch is for adults and manageable.

I like the sound of iPage.

I watched a panel discussion recently where a couple of NYT editors were discussing the need to transition to the modern internet age - and still make money - all through next-generation devices that would offer multimedia information. I would not be surprised if Apple and the NYT were involved in deep planning for a thrilling subscription-based edition of their newspaper; delivered regularly to an Apple tablet. Exclusive and compelling content delivered seamlessly at iTunes AppStore prices from the NYT would show the entire publishing world that money is there to be made. It would also show the Apple tablet in a fine light right out of the gate. With all sorts of 'analysts' claiming that an Apple tablet will fail if it isn't priced lower than any reasonable person could imagine; Apple is surely planning on showing truly exciting content from the very beginning. For these reasons, I think that this story might just be true!

NYTimes is doomed, thank God. What a rag.

Oct 26, 09 - 05:00 pm Comment from: Moo LAtte

Doesn't need an "i" anything.

"Apple Slate" or other non "I" name would be prudent.

Oct 26, 09 - 05:08 pm Comment from: loki

Isn't Slate a magazine that Micro$oft owns?

Oct 26, 09 - 05:26 pm Comment from: Connor MacBook

So he's been reading the rumors too ...

Oct 26, 09 - 07:39 pm Comment from: Big Als MBP

iSlate? We haven't used slates in schools since Little House on the Prairie was canceled.

Why not use something more modern?

My favorite is iPapyrus. It just rolls off the tongue and it would be a big hit in the Middle East,

"My favorite is iPapyrus. It just rolls off the tongue..."

LOL!

As for the Grey Lady being a rag, I rather like the paper. Or rather, the, um, digits (I read their website).

I wasted two hours last night because I caught an NYT article from a link, and then surfed a bunch of the sidebar stories. They have good content.
