Next-gen iPod nano images ‘confirmed’ by Apple Legal?
Thursday, August 23, 2007 - 10:33 AM EST

&t"Ironically, the only sure way to know the truth in an Apple rumor is to receive a takedown notice from Apple Legal. That's what happened to both Gizmodo and Apple news site 9to5Mac, who posted leaked images of a new, big screen iPod Nano," Charlie Sorrel blogs for Wired.

"The Fatboy Nano will play video and come in matt black, silver, cranberry, light blue and light green," Sorrel reports.

Full article here.

Gizmodo is running an online poll, "What do you think about the rumored new iPod nano?" along with a larger image of the rumored next-gen iPod nano here.

9 to 5 Mac's post (with imagery removed) along with reader comments here.

What about the keyboard images? They were available all over the place and I don't think Apple Legal took them down.

@ M.X.N.T.4.1

Maybe it's because selling keyboards is not a core Apple business?

Aug 23, 07 - 09:46 am Comment from: frisby

These kinds of leaks scare me. FSS is going to be firing a LOT of people soon.

Aug 23, 07 - 09:49 am Comment from: frisby

FSS...? I mean FSJ

Aug 23, 07 - 09:52 am Comment from: Inquisitive

If this is the new form, then will this work with the Nike+ sensor?

Aug 23, 07 - 09:53 am Comment from: NSFY

"FSS is going to be firing a LOT of people soon."

I had no idea the Florida State Seminoles were in that much trouble.

Aug 23, 07 - 09:55 am Comment from: Woody

I don't think a takedown is proof of an actual product. I think Apple's just as concerned about their name being attached to something not real as they are about premature news of real products.

Aug 23, 07 - 09:57 am Comment from: Mike

Love it...I want...oh wait, I already have an iPhone. Whatever, I want anyway.

Aug 23, 07 - 09:57 am Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

"Fatboy Nano"

Quentin Cook, Jr.?

Aug 23, 07 - 10:02 am Comment from: No Squirt For You

Woody: Good point. If Gizmodo claimed to have photos of a new, brown, brick-like iPod that squirted censored WMAs, Apple should release the Apple Legal hounds on them.

Aug 23, 07 - 10:02 am Comment from: dave viets

well, once in a while, Apple makes a mistake...this would be one of them. I have been trying to figure out why I don't like this new look (if real). I think it is because I don't like the form of a widescreen rectangle inside a square form with a circle look. Not attractive at all. If it doesn't sell very well, they will pull the plug on it about a year after...like they did with the Cube (although I loved the design of the Cube). Well see.

Aug 23, 07 - 10:21 am Comment from: ybo

Just because Apple Legal has pictures taken down doesn't mean they "confirmed" it...

stupid...

Aug 23, 07 - 10:26 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Generally, Apple only sends their legal bulls after web sites when the thing on the site is the real thing.

Me no like. The elongated elegance of the iPod mini, then nano is completely lost here. Yuckola!

Let's hope Apple releases the widescreen iPod sans phone.

Aug 23, 07 - 10:28 am Comment from: bioness

The current nanos fit in my pocket perfectly. Without the casing, just a thin cover on the screen so it doesn't get scratched.

Fatboy nano is going to snap... it's interesting, but I can't see how that'll fit in my pocket, considering that my ass is worked up to be stiff and hard, and that the current nano has a perfect width to the curvature of the smoothness of my ass.

Or what about my arm, when I wear that band to go jogging... oh I think I'll just gain a few extra kilos, for fatboy nano to fit nicely...

Aug 23, 07 - 10:29 am Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

In a surprising move, Apple Legal has decided to post an image in response to the images of rumored Apple products. Apparently, it's a crude drawing of an Apple Legal proposal for new sentencing guidelines.

Aug 23, 07 - 10:29 am Comment from: hotinplaya

I do not think this is real

As the play/pause button would be unusable in docking situations, ie, car adapters, sound systems (HiFi)

Aug 23, 07 - 10:30 am Comment from: Zune Tang

Nice Zune Jr. wannabe. Still needs more buttons and decals.

Your potential. Our passion.™

MDN word: hell. As in 'The soon to be released Zune Jr. will put a hell of a dent in copycat iPod nano sales.'

Aug 23, 07 - 10:35 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

A thought...

MAYBE this is the standard iPod with solid state flash storage instead of the hard drive?

Aug 23, 07 - 10:37 am Comment from: alansky

I gots t' agree: UGLY!

Aug 23, 07 - 10:41 am Comment from: Truth

9to5mac is full of BS.

Aug 23, 07 - 10:49 am Comment from: Grrrilla

Consider this: what if the width and thickness match the current nano, the screen size is the same, and the click wheel size is the same. It's basically the same nano, only shortened to take out the extra deck space on the front.

Now it really would fit completely in the watch pocket on your jeans, and wouldn't be subject to bending when you sit down. Also, it would still fit in most people's dock adapters, transmitters, etc. And if the capacity went to 16GB, it would become a lot more compelling.

After all, the nano isn't designed for pictures, videos, etc., which is why it has such a small screen. If you want those things, get the regular iPod.

Aug 23, 07 - 10:49 am Comment from: Surly Duff

FatBoy only works as an addition to the current line. Nano-a and Nano-v perhaps?

Aug 23, 07 - 10:57 am Comment from: Martin

if those iPods have a touch screen, why would they have a clickwheel ?

Aug 23, 07 - 10:59 am Comment from: could it be…

…the obesity problem in america is getting outta control?!? big surprise

Aug 23, 07 - 10:59 am Comment from: drbyers

i dub thee "fatboy©."

lol.

Aug 23, 07 - 11:01 am Comment from: OctoberMac

Why am I thinking this is what the new regular iPod will look like and not the Nano? It seems like a shrtened iPod with Video, not a Nano.

Aug 23, 07 - 11:02 am Comment from: Connor MacBook

Grrrilla, I think you're onto something. This is gonna be like a shuffle with a screen!
And for those who doubt this is real, I've never heard of Apple Legal acting on something that didn't turn out to be true.

Aug 23, 07 - 11:03 am Comment from: Artist

The people on this board seem to be clueless. How can they make the nano screen bigger without making it wider? For the price of the nano, you get a screen close to the size of the current video iPod. This make way for the current video iPod to transform into an iPhone without the phone feature. I for one think this nano looks great. I hope the back is metal. It will look great with that matt black front.

Aug 23, 07 - 11:03 am Comment from: Connor MacBook

Although ... a wider form factor than the current nano would make more sense for video viewing.

Aug 23, 07 - 11:11 am Comment from: iMaki

I think the colors and shapes are ugly. How can that thing feel good in your hand? I'm glad I got a 2nd generation when I did. Ugly iMacs and now this? Apple is losing its touch.

Aug 23, 07 - 11:20 am Comment from: M@c

If this is real, then I'm going to get the current Nano.

Me don't like.

Aug 23, 07 - 11:23 am Comment from: blucaso

I knows me some ugly...
and you, you is ugly!

(thanks to Ze)

Aug 23, 07 - 11:24 am Comment from: Mac Ed

U G L Y.

Aug 23, 07 - 11:28 am Comment from: 7over

The image, however 'real' it claims to be, does not make sense.
The screen ratio is neither 16x9 nor 4x3.

If it were designed to play video, don't you think it would have to be one or the other? (and most likely 16x9?)

Aug 23, 07 - 11:42 am Comment from: tt

its not that wide.. it just looks wide because its shorter... you will all love it and buy one... haters shutup

Aug 23, 07 - 11:47 am Comment from: Cubert

Come on, people!!! Both these pictures and the video of the new UI are REAL! Apple Legal doesn't ask sites to remove these things unless they are real. Can anyone name a single instance where it was not a real product? And, don't say the Jason O'Grady Asteroid incident, because in court Apple admitted it was a real product under development.

Aug 23, 07 - 11:51 am Comment from: Cubert

Thanks, Dave Viet, for the compliment!!!

wink

Aug 23, 07 - 11:52 am Comment from: naysayer

Just because Gizmodo and 9-5 claim Apple made them take down the images they are automatically believed by everyone. Apple made them remove the images!!! Oh yeah? Says who? Bogus. The whole bit is a sham. This debate is stupid.

Aug 23, 07 - 12:01 pm Comment from: Buster

Fat Boy???? Methinks Apple is making a real bomb this time.

Aug 23, 07 - 12:04 pm Comment from: Loru

I honestly dont think that these are new NANO shots.....

I believe that Apple will go to a 4 iPod platform

The Shuffle, Nano (maybe a bit shorter), the thing up there will be a new flash based video iPod, and the iPhony touch iPod that has a HDD for massive storage.

the above images fit for a mid range video ipod that isnt for the hard core

Aug 23, 07 - 12:08 pm Comment from: Masa

Doesn't look as good as the current one. I just hope that, it is NOT as wide as it looks.

Aug 23, 07 - 12:10 pm Comment from: Nick

Across the Universe isn't on the Beatles Love album

Aug 23, 07 - 12:10 pm Comment from: Mark

I don't think these are ugly at all. And it'll be nice to have a screen.

Aug 23, 07 - 12:20 pm Comment from: John

Eww.

Aug 23, 07 - 12:43 pm Comment from: Grigori

Between the decidely negative reaction here to this iPlod, and the overwhelming dissing of iMovie '08 (warranted or not), the frequent trolls on MDN should have ample evidence that we're not all a bunch of glazzy-eyed supplicants worshiping at the Apple iAltar.

I agree - this thing blows.

Aug 23, 07 - 12:45 pm Comment from: nekogami13

What makes me think it is a fake:
The original posting of the image is a blurry photo shop file.
The album art is crooked/slanted.
The song "Across the Universe" is not on the Love album.

Aug 23, 07 - 12:46 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Grigori

Don't forget those crappy glossy iMacs!!! ;P

Aug 23, 07 - 12:52 pm Comment from: Spock

This looks too much like a Creative Zen. Its too fat and ugly to be a Apple product. Probably a internal Apple joke leftover from last april fools.

Aug 23, 07 - 12:53 pm Comment from: Einstein

If you think about it... it is the simplest design possible to have the click wheel and decent size screen as close and small as possible. I like it.
