Nintendo sells over 600,000 Wii consoles at launch

“Nintendo had no problem getting rid of its first batch of its Wii gaming console. According to media reports, U.S. buyers snapped up about 600,000 devices within a few minutes after launch. Nintendo promised to follow up with 400,000 more consoles until the end of the year,” Wolfgang Gruener reports for TG Daily.

“The least expensive of the three third generation gaming machines had a smashing start: At least if we believe NexGen wars, a website that tracks game console sales, Nintendo had sold more than 667,000 Wii consoles by Monday noon, more than double of what Sony was able to sell of its Playstation 3, which was estimated to have sold about 259,000 units initially and will remain in very limited supply until the second quarter of next year,” Gruener reports. “Microsoft, which has a one-year lead over its two competitors, has sold about 7.1 million Xbox 360 units so far.”

  1. You say for ‘pretty obvious reasons’, but I really don’t see the ‘obvious’ part?
Is it because they’re the underdog?
Is it because they’re up against M$?
    Is it because it’s white?

What are the ‘obvious reasons’ you’re following this console?

  2. I picked up a Wii and so far it’s pretty good but I need to try more games before I can really form an opinion- all I’ve tried so far are the included sports games, which were good, and Call of Duty 3, which so far is just frustrating.

  3. The Wii is amazing, im one of the 600k people and let me tell u, this thing has potential.

Put a little bit of Apple in there and we have a masterpiece.

I assume they will sooner or later let us wirelessly stream our photos and misc things into it as it has the functionality, and if it lets me plug my ipod in soon ill be one happy camper!

  4. The obvious part was covered a bit ago. It’s the underdog aspect. MS and Sony are giants. Nintendo is also in it’s own right, but they don’t have the same resources as the other 2. That’s why Nintendo has to be innovative just like a certain other company.

  5. P.S.

Yes the 360 and the PS3 are technical marvels with raw unbridled power, but what true innovation does it offer the player. Better graphics, Faster more expansive games, more goodies. All of this is great and I and other gamers want this. But it is all expected of new generation consoles and is a mere evolution.

  6. This reminds me a little of DreamWorks vs. Pixar. Both with the technical power…but only Pixar understands the higher artistry of storytelling. What makes a great game?…seems as if Nintendo Wii is on to it. Apple understands the design combo of software/hardware/interface+magic….what would Apple games be like if they started a gaming division?…maybe working with Pixar….I don’t know, I’m not a gamer. Just thinking out loud.

If Apple is all about consumer electronics and owning the living room….then maybe iGame is part of that picture? …anybody thought about this?

  7. Nexgenwars.com is publicly known as innacurate and is actually run by 360 fan boys who cant help but face the fact their system will always be # 3. THey create their own “mathmatical forumlas” to CALUCLATE how many systems are sold and no real information is gathered from anywhere at all. Its their guess at it all.

  8. hmmmm 600,000 thats like only 599,728 more than Zune has sold to date. But what the heck, lets be generous and say Zune did an even 300. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  9. good call RC, even though the GC had some of the most beautiful graphics ever…

    RE4 anyone?

(RE4 on the GC outsold the other two versions as did the Soulcaliber GC version… with much better graphics)

  10. “Everything here revolves around ads and hits. Even the picture is an ad. Pretty soon we’ll have to click on an ad just to post a comment.”

    get adblock for firefox.

i have blocked every stinking ad and pop up on this site, and it’s actually readable now!

now if it could only block the smug snot sarcasm sometimes…

  11. RE: gamesystemwars.com

It says on their site — at the top and in big letters — that they get their data from Amazon.com’s sales. Hardly Xbox 360 fanbois.

Likewise thedvdwars.com which shows the results of the ongoing HD DVD versus Blu-ray wars; again it’s real sales data from Amazon.com

For me Xbox 360 just has same games as my Windows partition; PS3 has prettier versions of the same old games as PS2 and PS1 and PSP (Ridge Racer 7? Please! How boring); Wii for gaming fun please.

Like Apple, Nintendo have small market share but are actually profitable. Indeed Wii is profitable from day one whereas PS3 (wants to be next gen DVD player) and 360 (wants to be home media center) are both losing their manufacturers a pile of money.
