Nintendo Wii wins E3 ‘Best of Show’ award
Thursday, June 01, 2006 - 01:08 PM EST

"Video game critics on Wednesday honored Nintendo's Wii console and Electronic Arts' upcoming "Spore" video game for bringing fresh ideas to the $28.5 billion industry that has been criticized for relying on films for inspiration and on game sequels for sales," Lisa Baertlein reports for Reuters. "Critics crowned the Wii 'Best of Show' after game enthusiasts at the recent Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) waited hours to get their hands on the Nintendo Co. Ltd. machine due later this year. They raved about how its new controller allowed them to play sports games like tennis and football much in the same way they are played in real life."

"Creating games for the Wii is expected to be far less expensive than for the PS3 and Xbox 360, super-charged machines that boast eye-popping graphics capabilities and cost about twice as much as Nintendo's upcoming console," Baertlein reports. "Wii also won for 'Best Hardware' and Nintendo's 'Wii Sports' title took home the prize for 'Best Sports Game.'"

To add some Apple content to this story, the Wii will come with two USB ports, and no Hard Drive. Nintendo says they will let users choose what storage to use, either through SD cards and/or external hard drives. If the Wii is able to connect to an Apple iPod to play music while playing games and to store game data and downloads, that would be a major advantage for Nintendo.

It's going to be interesting to see the marketshare figures for the three consoles once the dust has settled. I have a feeling Nintendo won't be in third place this time around. smile

and thanks MDN for following their story!

Cool!

Jun 01, 06 - 01:37 pm Comment from: big tex

MDN, I disaree. This is Apple related. Nintendo is another company who is relying on innovation, design, and what the customer wants. They are also up against crappy companies who rely on market bully tactics and do not innovate. Go Nintendo.

Jun 01, 06 - 01:39 pm Comment from: StooMonster

Nintendo should be the console of choice for Mac-fans; for the big N it's the quality of software and the experience that counts.

Apple and Nintendo are similar in many ways, they should work together.

Jun 01, 06 - 01:41 pm Comment from: The Realist

some seem to have too much faith in the masses and their coveting innovation... nintendo may make the most innovative system, but it is extremely unlikely it will beat out the playstation and xbox.

Jun 01, 06 - 01:42 pm Comment from: macromancer

Where are all the evil people complaining about "how is this Apple related" and "slow news day"?

I for one think it's great. It certainly is of relevance to some mac users since we tend to like things on teh cutting edge, and yes these controllers are going to change how people play games.

Im not much of a gamer, but I can't wait to play one.

Jun 01, 06 - 01:43 pm Comment from: The Realist

just as apple cannot beat out microsoft

innovation doesn't count for that much.

Jun 01, 06 - 01:49 pm Comment from: davida

yes, keep us posted on Wii, love backing the underdog. I love a story when the ending is anyone's guess, go Apple and Nintendo. It'd be cool if they joined forces somehow.

Jun 01, 06 - 01:52 pm Comment from: real realist

The gaming industry has always been fluid.New market leaders happen every generation or so.

PS3 and XBox are TOO expensive for the average person and has a market of teenagers and losers without girlfriends.

Wii goes after the average person who either stopped playing games because of how Sony and Microsoft destroyed them; or for people who never played games.

The Wii has to problems:
a) The controller
b) Nintendo writes games for 7 year olds.

These guys are on the right track but they should consider broadening their audience. The days of the Famicom are over. Time to get competitive.

"The Wii has to problems:

I still want two buy one.

Jun 01, 06 - 02:19 pm Comment from: rasterbator

all they had to do was take one look at the line for people who wanted to play the Wii, and the best of show was in the bag.

Jun 01, 06 - 02:20 pm Comment from: rasterbator

@realist:
Nintendo Wii will win the hearts of three groups: families who want to play games together, gamers looking for a new experience, children who love to play games but require parental guidance. The playstation and the XBOX are for older teens and adults, and really compete with PC hardcore gamers. The problem with the latter two systems is that they are not geared for young kids, and the games available on these systems are too violent. The parents who buy XBOX or PlayStations for kids younger than 14 either do not understand the systems' (or games) target market or are the sort of parents who don't give a rats ass and think that violent games don't harm kids. They would be wrong.

Jun 01, 06 - 02:21 pm Comment from: rasterbator

The Wii will more than double the number of PlayStation 3 sales. And they will win awards for industrial design, have the best overall system, have loyal users but with a smaller customer base. Just like Apple. And that is just fine for companies that are interested in making a profit but not skimping on quality.

Jun 01, 06 - 02:22 pm Comment from: StooMonster

Common misconception that Nintendo write games for kids, they don't ... their games are simply fun.

What their games are not are shiny racing cars, lone soldiers, crappy licensed IP of movie or tv, EA sports, that are the boring boring boring bread and butter of PS and Xbox. Although Sony doing better with Guitar Hero and Singstar titles.

Jun 01, 06 - 02:30 pm Comment from: The Realist

@rasterbator
you said nothing against my pronunciation that Nintendo will again fall third.

Jun 01, 06 - 02:34 pm Comment from: Alice

Nintendo is thinking different, thus this is very apple related.

Jun 01, 06 - 02:44 pm Comment from: Kassandra

to the first post, Microsoft already does this with the Xbox 360, though they do not allow transferring of music from a portable device to the system's harddrive, nor do they allow music to be played off of external devices during gameplay. This would be a good thing for Nintendo to do, but they are focused on games, not other forms of entertainment. Just like the original Xbox, users will have to buy an accessory to play DVD's on the console, according to Nintendo in recent months anyways. I would hope that it can play CD's or MP3 CD's at least though, even if it did require said attachment.

"Nintendo makes games for 7 year olds"

Exactly! Have you tried buying PS2 and XBOX games for a family of 9, 6 and 5?

Nintendo makes GAMES. Sony and Micro$hite make fully interactive multimedia experiences.

Have any of you ever seen the joy a five year old gets from a freezer box (the thing the freezer came in)? Its a rocket ship, a boat, ...

Nintendo get games, Apple get computers.

I have to say that, I bought a GameCube for my 14 year old kid last year and we've really enjoyed most of the games that we've purchased for it. I wanted an Xbox, but I didn't want to spend the money until the new version came out. Now that the new version is out I'm pretty much into out GC games and have lost a lot of interest in the new Xbox - even though I'm sure its cool - I'm really not looking for alternate reality experiences, I'm looking to play games.

Now that Wii has received preliminary kudos I remain interested in Nintendo products.

I do wish that someone would port the TombRaider series to Nintendo.

Hope Wii takes a large pc of Sony's pie. Amazing how Sony is F'ing up everything they touch.

Jun 01, 06 - 04:29 pm Comment from: Toosday

Nintendo - the underdog in the beginning - is stealing the show from Sony and Microsoft! Serves 'em right!

Nintendo understands something that Microsoft and Sony doesn't: Gaming is all about the experience.

According to this news feed http://www.games-asia.com/newsdesk_info.php/newsdesk_id/9 "Yoshihiro Mori says buy Nintendo WII for under 25,000Yen".

The price for the Nintendo Wii system will be about 200-250 US$ or between 165-235 Euro.

Do you think thats to expensive for a games system?
