No, Woz did not ‘ditch’ his Apple iPhone for Google’s rebadged HTC ‘Nexus One’

January Clearance Blowout ends 1/14Earlier today we questioned the validity of Sajid Farooq’s report for NBC Bay Area that claimed that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak had “ditched the iPhone for Google’s Nexus One.”

That did not ring true to us, so we wondered, “Did Woz really ‘ditch'” his iPhone. Nowhere can we find Woz saying such a thing. More likely, did the gadget-obsessed Woz simply picked up a Nexus One to try out and, barely one day into it, hadn’t yet realized its numerous shortcomings?” We suspected “more ginned up half-truths” and explained our belief that “typically, at any given time, Woz has more gadgets on him than most of us have ever owned.”

Besides just questioning Farooq’s report, we also did the next logical thing and questioned Steve Wozniak’s Executive Assistant, Julie Roebuck.

Via email, Ms. Roebuck told MacDailyNews, “Steve is simply trying out a Nexus One, but does still use the iPhone (he carries multiple cell phones).”

“Steve is extremely passionate about gadgets and new technology,” Roebuck said. “He loves to try out new products so he can compare them to others on the market and be able to speak first hand about each one when asked.”

See how easy that was, Sajid?

As we said this morning, “It’s no wonder local TV is dying.”

  1. There is no integrity in web journalism (including MDN) because the standards of the past (self-censorship for accuracy) have long been dropped in favor of generating hits.

Gee, that sounds eerily like the standard applied by the National Inquirer (and all other grocery store tabloids).

Assuming you actually want to report things accurately, then yes, contacting the people involved with the core of the story is indeed the logical next step.

However, if you’d rather rush to press with sensationalized half-truths… well, Sajid Farooq already followed the “logical” path to that end result.

  3. Gregg Thurman,

While most of us regulars understand that you aren’t too bright, for the sake of casual readers:

MacDailyNews (MDN) just precisely demonstrated integrity in Web journalism despite what Gregg Thurman writes above.

  4. @Jamie
You give your iPhone number to your best friends and esteemed coworkers. You give your Droid phone number to your casual friends and acquaintances who might get a call back. You give your Nexus One number to Steve Ballmer and telemarketers.

  5. What ever happened to the “triple confirmation” golden rule of jounalism?

This reflects on the low/ non existing standards of this plumber’s publication just as much.

Take your gutter credentials to the sewer where they belong farooq

  6. @ Murray Westerhoff,

“You can only fill the void in your life with products for so long. Woz is just sad.”

Murray, you slut, everybody on this blog is filling the voids in their lives with products, from Apple, including you.

You’re just sad, Murray, just sad. Sad that someone had to explain it to you, you poor bastard.

  7. @Jamie I think it’s possible to have SIM Cards duplicated. Woz might be able to figure it out.

I was talking to an acquaintance yesterday. I asked about a pile of papers he had, maybe a hundred pages. He’d just got a Droid phone and said that was the manual (with a huge sense of disgust).

I bit my tongue so hard, to keep from launching into an iPhone ad, it nearly bled.

  8. “It must be a pain in the ass carrying multiple phones around.”

Checking for 3 accurate sources takes time. These days, it’s not whether your news is accurate, but whether you got it out there first that counts. Newsprint is begging for mercy, and the electronic age means a story can be published a few milliseconds after it’s written. Proofread? Edit? What’s that?

That is the sad truth of the state of affairs.

Oh, and let’s not even get into the networks that don’t bother even waiting for news to happen, but fabricate their own like, oh, <cough> Fox <cough>.

The age of true journalism may not be dead, but it’s definitely on its last legs. <sighs>
