Norfolk, Virginia’s MacArthur Center slated to get Apple retail store

“Deep in the job opportunities area of the Apple Computer Inc. Web site lurks a little tidbit that would make local Mac lovers cheer,” Carolyn Shapiro reports for The Virginian-Pilot. “A search of jobs at Apple retail stores by state lists ‘Norfolk-McArthur-VA’ among six locations named in Virginia. If the listing means a new store is coming to MacArthur Center in downtown Norfolk, it would be the first Apple retail outlet in Hampton Roads. Yet before any Apple addicts get too excited, they should know that neither the company’s nor the mall’s representatives would confirm plans for a local store. ‘We certainly haven’t made any announcements,’ said Monica Wik, a spokeswoman for Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif.”

“MacArthur Center officials also shed no light. “I have nothing to tell you,” said Karen Winters, the mall’s marketing director,” Shapiro reports. “However, the ifoapplestore.com Web site has posted Apple’s plans for a Norfolk store on its front page. The location is notable to those watching the Web site, which tracks information about Apple’s retail activities, because it names Hampton Roads among the largest metropolitan areas in the country without an Apple retail presence.”

  1. I could have sworn there was a link here to some Quicktime movie. Oh well. But anyway, Apple, can we get an Apple store here in Columbia, SC? Heck, you can do one in Charleston, just as long as it is in the state.

  2. That’s GREAT news! Not too far from where I grew up and where my family still is. Trips home now will include a visit to the Apple Store.

Let’s just hope the store is not of the “Mini” variety – like our local Apple store. I would love to attend the Apple demos / events that the larger stores hold. Our mini store has none of that. <sigh>

I know, I know…I should look at the bright side that at least an Apple store is near where I live. Looking at the positive, the Apple Store within our CompUSA seems to compliment rather than compete against the Apple store. Glad to see the Apple Store didn’t drive away the compitetion.

  3. I hope the rumours are true about five Apple stores opening in Germany this year.

I’d love one to open here in Berlin.

Despite my age (58) I’m going to wait up all night with a sleeping bag – not because of the freebies but because the press and local TV always pick up on these things and Apple gets a lot of free publicity.

  4. Okay, it’s February 2006. That’s when the Apple Store in Northpark Center in Dallas is supposed to open. I just hope it’s not almost March before it does! No official date yet, that I have seen…

  5. Great! I just moved from there about six months ago. Most people don’t realize how densely populated Hampton Roads is (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton and Suffolk—and even Williamsburg). I believe over 1 million people with fairly high income levels, especially Va Beach and Williamsburg.

And it is a pain to go to Richmond or D.C. through Williamsburg via the bridge-tunnel if you want to visit an Apple store.
