Novell CEO: ‘Microsoft sucked $60 billion out of IT industry that could have used for innovation’
Monday, September 13, 2004 - 03:10 PM EST

"Microsoft has sucked billions of dollars out of the IT industry that could have been spent in more fruitful ways, according to Novell. Speaking on Monday at BrainShare Europe, Novell's annual conference here, CEO Jack Messman told customers and partners that Microsoft's exhaustive license fees for Windows have prevented end-user organizations and independent software developers from directing cash into more 'innovative' software," Andrew Donoghue writes for CNET News. "'I am of the opinion that innovation has been slowed because of Microsoft. It has sucked $60 billion out of our industry that could have been used for innovation,' he said. A Microsoft representative was not immediately available for comment."

Sep 13, 04 - 03:31 pm Comment from: Jimbo von Winskinheimer

Kudos to the gentleman for speaking the truth about Microshaft, a company that Novell will continue to do business with. Ol' Billy Gates will probably put him on the shit list and Novell will start feeling the wrath.

Hey, I'm glad to see industry leaders start speaking out publicly more and more about the atrocities that M$ has perpetrated.

Sep 13, 04 - 03:39 pm Comment from: peragirn

hey it may be obvious, but unless someone speaks it, is it really true???(yea in this case yes but some people need to be hit upside the head.)

Sep 13, 04 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Rick

Whatever, Mary.

Sep 13, 04 - 03:41 pm Comment from: Muddy Waters

And this is a revelation to whom?

Novell owns SUSE Linux. How else do we expect them to speak about Microsoft? As much as I agree with the guy, I can't forget he has an anti-Microsoft agenda that "colors" his rhetoric.

What he says is true, too bad his believability index is so low. It gives MS users an excuse not to take him seriously. He heeds to get backup from an independent source.

Sep 13, 04 - 04:06 pm Comment from: me

MS didn't suck out 60 billion. It was freely offered up to MS by ignorant IT sheep. MS does suck however.

Sep 13, 04 - 04:17 pm Comment from: mike

Jack Messman also wins the 2004 Big Balls award to dissing MS in public.. not common from someone actually in power..

I hope he didn't just figure this out. I also hope he hasn't been sitting on the revelation for years.

Steve is an AmericanArab so he would do fine by running Apple, Pixar, Disney and USA. (quattro ceo?)

European Union is the only Super Power with China.
Steve knows how to keep Pax Apple with the only Super Powers in the world smile

Amazing how the Bush sucks like windows :(

Sep 13, 04 - 07:00 pm Comment from: One guy from Finland

Bush has sucked like... what 300 billion out of middle class pockets... Nice really nice...
Chinese will own USA within 5 years smile

Sep 13, 04 - 07:11 pm Comment from: One guy from Finland

One advice to Americans...
If you need oil... do not attack in the middle east... attack Canada... they have more oil than Arabs all together smile And there are only twenty something million Canadians.. much less than Arabs (over 1 billion)

Then again if all of the Americans would move to Canada it would be a disaster.. Average IQ would go down 90% :(

Finland,

No one is listening.

Sep 13, 04 - 08:07 pm Comment from: dazed and+confused

It's one thing for Microsoft to suck $60 Billion out of the IT Industry. It's another for IT to get sucked in and support it.

Sep 13, 04 - 09:13 pm Comment from: Johnny Canuck

... attack Canada...

No need. Set up business. Ottawa will roll over. I garontee, mm, hm.

Sep 13, 04 - 11:03 pm Comment from: mac dood

attack canada ??.... why??

Already, most of the world hates the US... thanx to the current administration....

At least the Canadians are smart enough to realize that not every American supports the National Guard drop out in the White House !

Sep 14, 04 - 12:17 am Comment from: milo

If $60B has needlessly gone to M$, why don't people get off their butts and do something about it? What other OSes are feasible for end-users? OS 9; OS X. Novell should put some real resources, and real funding, behind linux to give people a viable option.

Look at all the open source projects that are threatening M$ right now: various linux stripes; OpenOffice; WINE; etc. if this big rich guy is serious he should get some of his CEO buddies and put together a foundation dedicated to supporting (I mean supporting financially) open source initiatives. This way we can hope that these tools become usable in our lifetime. As things stand they're just hobbies, and it's pathetic that M$ is vulnerable at all. If companies hope to someday reap the rewards of cheap-to-free OSes etc., they should be willing to invest capital toward making it happen.

Sep 14, 04 - 02:20 am Comment from: twilightmoon

The pathetic political howling is already bad enough in these forums.. I don't think I'll be able to stand it when Bush gets re-elected in a landslide.. I guess I'll have to find somewhere else to get my Mac/MS news kicks, because all this mindless politcal debate sucks asps (deadly snakes).

If you have a political opinion unrelated to the main topic, try writing your own blog.

Thanks

One guy from Finland,

As a fellow "guy from Finland", and as a "silent reader" of MacDailyNews I've felt the urge to tell you to shut up on several occasions in the past.
This time I'm gonna go forward and do it. (Sorry, everyone)

The fact that you relentlessly try to convince people of other nations, mainly american people, that they somehow are less intelligent than you (and add the fact that you somehow always compare Finland with USA) is so plain stupid that you just... should know better.
Yes, there are stupid people in the states. But hey, here's a shocker, there are stupid people in Finland too, my neighbour actually is one of the most stupid people I've ever known!
This should go without saying, but with you I'm not that sure: There are stupid people all around the globe!

And why do you feel the urge to constantly diss Bush on a mac-specific site? The last time I looked at the opinion polls, it's about 50-50, so get over it, he has his supporters, and he has those who do not support him.
If you want to discuss politics, do it on a site intended for that purpose.

The reason I wrote this is mainly the fact that I'm really getting pissed off at One guy from Finland for making me, and fellow finns look really bad.
...cause we ain't all THAT bad, really.

One guy from Finland, It's great that you share the same kind of passion for the mac as the rest of us here do, but please, just please, leave out the politics, and the stupid (political) advising you always manage to try to do, but never quite succeed in.

-mcfinn

Well said mcfinn ... I've spent some of my nicest times in the Nordic countries, primarily Sweden. I find the people very knowledgeable and not at all like "One guy from Finland". He needs to get his act together and stop wasting bandwith!

Sep 14, 04 - 09:35 am Comment from: One Guy From The Bronx

Hey One Girl From Finland. Come on down to the Bronx and we'll show you how stupid we are.

Sep 14, 04 - 09:36 am Comment from: Maryanne

George Bush is awesome! He will win and I'm glad it will drive all of you Bush haters nuts!

Sep 14, 04 - 10:06 am Comment from: John Doe

I think One Guy from Finland actually works for MDN and is planting seeds for hits.

Sep 14, 04 - 10:41 am Comment from: Less is More

That makes it the biggest cluster-suck ever -- and that doesn't even count what it's done for the gov't, military, and in particular, the justice department.

Sep 14, 04 - 10:47 am Comment from: Dave H

I'd love to see Novell make a comeback, especially on Linux. The man's right, though, Windows isn't going anywhere until the users themselves make the effort to ditch it.

Sep 14, 04 - 05:00 pm Comment from: neomonkey

Hey mcfinn, mellow out. One guy doesn't make Finland look bad, he's just expressing himself, unlike you, who think expressing yourself is criticising others' expressions. And Bush is more like 40% in the US, and 2% in the rest of the world. The last time I heard, Finland wasn't in the US.

Maryanne, Bush is seriously behind in electoral votes, and Republicans are crapping their pants. It's nice that you're putting up a brave front, but it's pretty hopeless for the Shrub and his con men.

Novell's CEO is a little harsh here, he could have left Microsoft with a few billion. But that's what monopolies do, grab as much as they can at others' expense.

Sep 14, 04 - 05:49 pm Comment from: mcfinn

neomonkey,

As I said, I don't want to discuss politics here. And I couldn't care less about the election in the states, as I don't live there, and it's none of my business.

I'm sorry if my words were harsh, and if I went after One guy from Finland too aggressively. That's just how I felt at the moment, and I went with that. I don't like people who categorize people in different groups based on their nationality. That's how I felt One guy did. (And has done before)

I mean we're all just... people.. So let's try to get along.

I don't think Finland is in the US either, I'm quite sure of it frankly.

Sep 14, 04 - 06:51 pm Comment from: Thorpedo

Excuse the OT post: netiquette oriented

Hey mcfinn, I do not think you were too agressive on "One guy from Finland" at all. He (She/It?) sometimes makes useful contributions but often a little too much random noise (politics etc) creeps in.

Yes, neomonkey, maybe it adds a bit of colour but sometimes it is all a bit too much. There is no point (here) sending mindless posts about the supposed superiority of the European Union and that everything in USA sucks; if "One guy from Finland" is so anti-USA why use a Mac?

Disclaimer: I too am pissed with some USA policies and I am not brave enough to live there (anymore) but I have met some of the most marvelous folks there (OK the USA is a bit USA-centric but then the EU is very EU-centric). Such is life!

On topic: I think Microsoft could have done so much more creative work with the money it made but I suppose it is like the Mickey-D (or Maccas as we say in Oz) of Software ... consistently (bad) wherever you go in the world, filling for a while and you always want to get some more but it never improves!

Sep 15, 04 - 04:41 pm Comment from: SnagglePuss

How about the 30 billion + that novell gripped from the industry? Like they are the ones being innovative. The only Company Innovative right now is Apple and considering the cash they have, that isnt saying much. MS Improves the products the've made (Baby Steps) just not enough. They spend too much time trying to market the product and not enough "innovating". Frankly, Im getting tired of every OS.
