Obama forced to quit CrackBerry addiction, but likely to keep using his Mac
Monday, November 17, 2008 - 12:27 PM EDT

"Before he ran for president Barack Obama quit smoking," Seth Borenstein reports or The Associated Press.

MacDailyNews Note: Not according to The Telegraph, "He promised Michelle he would quit smoking before running for president – he didn't," Jon Swaine reports. "He says his worst habit is constantly checking his BlackBerry."

Borenstein continues, "Now that he's won the job, he may have [attempt] to break another addiction: Checking his BlackBerry for e-mail."

"The president's e-mail can be subpoenaed by Congress and courts and may be subject to public records laws, so if a president doesn't want his e-mail public, he shouldn't e-mail, experts said. And there may be security issues about carrying around trackable cell phones," Borenstein reports.

"Obama transition officials haven't made a decision on what the new president will or will not carry, but those who have been there say it's unlikely he'll carry his BlackBerry and he may be in for some withdrawal pains," Borenstein reports. "Obama has often been seen avidly checking his e-mail on his handheld equipment... Actress Scarlett Johansson said she has had frequent e-mail exchanges with him during his campaign travels, something the Obama campaign downplayed."

"There is presidential precedent for an e-mail blackout. Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton didn't e-mail while in office," Borenstein reports. "A few days before Bush took office in 2001, he sent an e-mail to a few dozen close friends saying he would no longer use e-mail: 'Since I do not want my private conversations looked at by those out to embarrass, the only course of action is not to correspond in cyberspace. This saddens me.'"

Borenstein reports, "Bush was unhappy about losing his e-mail and mostly used the phone to talk to friends, former Bush press secretary Scott McClellan wrote, adding, "I am sure the president looks forward to being able to communicate with them via e-mail again come January 20, 2009."

Brian X. Chen reports for Wired that Obama is "a Mac user [so] it's highly likely that his chat client of choice is iChat. Michelle Obama told People magazine that the one gadget her husband would never leave at home is a webcam, which he uses to stay in touch with her and the kids whenever he's traveling. iChat's the best Mac app for video chatting, and it's the easiest to use, too."

Full article here.

David Flynn writes for APC Magazine, "Obama has yet to make good on his promise to give up smoking. Maybe when he sneaks out of the Oval for a cigarette on the sly he might also borrow a BlackBerry for a quick fix." As for his Mac, "Just as long as he does not do any emailing, blogging or IM sessions he should be OK."

MacDailyNews Take: The fact that all BlackBerry email goes through a NOC in a foreign country is probably an issue, too.

Nov 17, 08 - 01:30 pm Comment from: One-Term Obama

Two issues:

1. If Obama can't even keep a promise to his own wife, his promises to voters are worthless.

2. Obama lacks judgement if he thinks his worst habit is CrackBerry addiction over sucking habitually on cancer sticks.

But wait, according to the FBI, both Obama and McCains computers were hacked by the Chinese during the elections.

So does this mean the Mac is vunerable?

Or Obama really doesn't use a Mac and just another Windows drone?

What does this say about security awareness with our new prez?

Nov 17, 08 - 01:47 pm Comment from: asndvxzV

Great, now when will Obama cure his addiction to higher taxes, wasteful government programs, and uncontrolled spending?

Nov 17, 08 - 01:47 pm Comment from: Barry H. Obama

Make no mistake . . . my plan is to first move America from it's current system of a capitalist ethos of "Liberty" toward a new world order concept of a capitalist ethos of "Equality". It's, you know, a more European model. And we all know that Europe's got it all going on over us. Why, I even saw it with my own eyes when I spoke there a few months back in Germany.

And after that, looking forward, I'll will do everything within my power to level the playing field to dead-eye balanced, to spread the wealth around to all, and to eventually and one day bring this great nation into the bounty of the 21st century by embracing the paradigm of "take from those who've won life's lottery and give to those who don't give a rat's ass and just don't feel like trying".

Because THAT'S the America I envision for ALL people.

Nov 17, 08 - 01:50 pm Comment from: Rheinhard

Ah of course, the one MDN comment on this is another snipe trying to falsely make Obama out to be some terrible liar, and not a positive comment about "Hey! Our next prez will be a Mac user! Yay!" I have no doubt that if any article about Caribou Barbie had come out showing her in the vicinity of a Mac it would have been front page news with whole paragraphs of gushing praise for her technological foresight.

Also you neglect to mention what a positive development it will be to have a president who actually pays attention to little things like laws demanding traceability on emails, which have been repeatedly ignored and flouted by Bush administration officials. From the many "missing" emails of Bush and Cheney staffers, to Rove doing much official White House business through his RNC account (illegal, because the RNC is not subject to the monitoring and archiving requirements of the White House), to the Bush staffer who illegally called in "Geek Squad" to purge his PC of all data just as an investigation was getting around to subpoenaing him (also illegal, there is offical White House tech staff that are supposed to handle this stuff)...

But oh, guess MDN didn't see fit to report on any of those "tech" issues did they? But it sure can be counted on to nitpick the incoming president who isn't even in office yet, who has made repeated pledges to increase governement openness and transparency, and who will be the most tech-saavy chief exec in history and who ran the most wired campaign ever, you betcha!

Nov 17, 08 - 01:53 pm Comment from: BC Kelly

2 things ....

1 - Posting on another web site about this story, I brought up idea that, aside from any "legalities" involved with the Prez and email, seems the biggest concern would be basic security.

THAT would not be a problem if he got an iPhone, yes ?

2 - Ok, I give up. What is "NOC" ?

Thanks, BC

Nov 17, 08 - 02:01 pm Comment from: Raving MacHead

Oh by the way, socialist sub-prime housing by Congressional Democrats forced upon Freddie and Frannie and originally started by Bill Clinton with revisions to the Community Reinvestment Act to force banks to give loans to sub-prime and even illegal aliens is directly responsible for the current state of the economy.

Treasury under Greenspan had to lower the prime rate given to banks to stimulate the economy in danger of going into severe sub-zero runaway DEFLATION caused by the flood of cheap Chinese imports. (Which Clinton made China favored nation trade status by the way)

2003 Bush tried to get Freddie and Frannie under the Treasury.

2005 Greenspan warned of the failing of the US economy because of the blank check for housing by Freddie and Frannie. "Privatizing the profits and socializing the risks"

Research bill SR 190 in 2005 to fix the problem. Signed on by John McCain by the way. But failed the present Dem controlled Congress. Because they wanted to keep giving out the sub-prime loans and keep the racket going!

Then when it all blows up in 2006, the Dems blame Bush and get elected in 2008! America is full of idiots!

check the records. top receivers of PAC money.

1: Dodd $165,000 plus from Freddie/Fannie
2: Obama $125,000 from same.
3: Hillary $75,000 from same.

No lie. Look up the facts!! Follow the money trail!!

Where did Obama get so much money to out spend McCain 3x?

My guess? Chinese Government and kick backs from Freddie/Frannie. Our money.

You pay 700 billion $$$, plus $110 billion worth of PORK added on by the Dems.

Now they control the whole government, no wonder the stock market dropped 1000 points in two days after the Dems won.

America is FSCKED. Chine rules now.

Thanks Clinton you fsckhead.

Nov 17, 08 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Macintosher

My guess is that either Obama got his Mac hijacked through being over-liberal with file sharing or that the Chinese made it up. The latter, knowing the media hype and my own instincts, is more likely. I definitely don't think they could hack a MacBook using iChat. You could, but the effects would've been more serious.

Nov 17, 08 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Sarah Failin'

I think MDN is run out of a trailer park.

Republicans are a lost and dead party. They're such idiots. I almost long for the days in the 70's and 80's when Republicans were the party of the rich elites, and were actually intellectual a la William F. Buckley. Now they're trying to be populists ... FAIL.

Thankfully, most Americans rightly fear and loathe gun-toting, American flag waving barbarians who travel in mobs and paint "obama terrorist" on their fat, mustard-stained beer bellies.

Thank God this country has come to it's senses.

Nov 17, 08 - 02:07 pm Comment from: Follower

@victorious - You've got a lot of words in there with more than one syllable. Probably not a good idea for those you are addressing. Perhaps a more suitable translation would be: "Yee-haw! Your Dubya feller ain't run the gubmint no more!"

And don't let them get you upset -- just laugh about it. Especially when Republicans predict "uncontrolled spending" after eight years of Bush/Cheney/Halliburton! It's like water calling fire "wet."

Nov 17, 08 - 02:14 pm Comment from: informed

Way to go, MDN. You never fail to show your knuckle-dragging political bent.

Obama isn't perfect, but at least he is an evolved human.

That's far more than can be said about any brownshirt-wearing member of the Repuglitard party.

Thank the karmic gods that Sarah Palin is a "leader" of the Repuglitards. She is insurance that those Borrow-and-Squander™, Appalachian-inbred, Limbaugh-consuming, halfwits will remain the party of the surefire punchline.

Palin / Gingrich in '12! Yeah, that's the ticket!

I still can't believe a majority of people in this country has fallen for this radical guy' speeches & promises. Most of them will deeply regret for sure , trouble is they have put him & Biden - the least qualified candidates ever in the highest & most important office. I'd say America is doomed under this guy's administration, if u think it's bad now, expect it's much worse only 12 months after his sworn in, wait & see.

Thankfully, most Americans rightly fear and loathe gun-toting, American flag waving barbarians who travel in mobs and paint "obama terrorist" on their fat, mustard-stained beer bellies.

Well Obama and Bill Ayers (a real domestic, bombing terrorist) are well known buddies. That's a FACT.

Second, I live near a very LIBERAL area, in fact they are a bunch of RAVING LEFTIST LOONIES. Which unfortunatly has rubbed off on my personality thus my nick.

They say they everyone is equal, wah wah. But god forbid if they suspect your views don't include lowering the age of marriage, gay marriage and child adoption, free illegal drugs for children, free housing, money and everything else from the government. Ripping newborns from the womb. Letting terrorists kill our children and then criticizing Bush for defending the country in Iraq. Then your not welcome and viewed as a "black hater" for thinking McCain would do a better job due to his vast experience and Navy training and would bring the troops home with victory in Iraq so we won't have to go back there ever again instead of fleeing like cowards under Obama's reign.

I work hard for a living and do the right things, I defended my country and these nutcases who never been in combat can call the shots, these people are INSANE!!

So there is radical nutcases on both sides of the fence.

Just like there is Fox and MSNBC.

Our political differences has SEVERLY DIVIDED OUR COUNTRY to the point that it's not functional anymore.

We deserve to fail. Long live China.

Nov 17, 08 - 02:25 pm Comment from: chuckle

@ Raving Machead

1st of all, McCain's computers were hacked in the same way by the same people.

2nd of all, Fanny and Freddie SUPPORTED Bush's proposal to have them supervised by treasury because the plan guaranteed they'd continue receiving massive government subsidies and also guaranteed they'd be bailed out by the government should their business go south. Bush's "oversight" committees were well known to be packed with industry cronies and there's a long record of his oversight looking the other way, as in the case of the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, which amazingly didn't notice massive corruption and mismanagement and was a laughable joke.

So the facts are there, and they don't support you. The reality is that the Republican philosophy at it's core is to let large corporations run rip-shod with no oversight. And if they do get oversight it's very, very friendly oversight with a wink and a nod.

Luckily, the American people saw through Republican lies and came to believe and know that the economy is in tatters directly because of Republican policies. Enron, Fanny/Freddie, the war, Katrina ... the whole Bush eight years stink of sh*t to high heaven and he IS and WILL BE remembered as one of the worst presidents in history. And that, Raving Fool, is indisputable.

Your "facts" are straight from the propagandist's ass. And that ass would be Sean Hannity.

But of course, it's all Clinton's fault. Which doesn't explain how every single post-civil war economic recession and/or depression in American history has occurred while a Repuglitard held the presidency.

Still, if your humor was any dryer, I would have missed the parody. Jolly good show!

Your comment sounded so plausible and articulate - albeit flat wrong - right up to the part where you claim the Chinese government paid Obama's campaign. Then whammo!!!...... you disappeared into some kinda parallel republican universe where these things make some kind of f*cked-up sense to the losers in this election.

The truth: Barack Obama received 91% of his campaign contributions from individuals [$579,178,033]; and only $1,280 from PAC's.

Whereas John MCain received $1,412,559 from PAC's and his individual contributions make up only 54%.

Unless you come to terms pretty soon with being on the losing side of progress you are in for a very miserable, bitter and angry eight years.

All I got to say is these facts:

1: Everything was fine with the economy UNTIL the Dems took control of Congress under Bush from the Republicans. Then the sub-prime market went to HELL. CountryWide anyone?

2: The stock market dropped nearly 500 points the day after Nov 4, 2008 when the Dems won the entire government and then ANOTHER near 500 points the next day.

3: The Dems support labor unions which has bleeded the auto makers dry so they have no money to weather the bad times and our vehicles cost 3x as much as a same GM Chinese made one and then when things get bad as they are now they want us JOE PUBLIC to pony up more money that WE need OURSELVES.

4: $110 Billion of pork added on by the DEMS to the huge 700 Billion needed to bail out the Socialist Sub-prime housing attempt by Congressional Dems.

SOCIALIST DEMOCRATS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR PROBLEMS BY SOCIALIZING THE SUB-PRIME RISK!!

Surely the capitalistic republicans wouldn't dare give out a sub-prime mortgage to a illegal alien if there was a chance of them having to take the burn for their failure right?

Case closed. America is fscked for the next 2 years.

I, too, hope things go well. In all honesty I hope the conservative movement gets on it's feet again, and in a stronger truer way than it's looked in recent history. I respect old time conservatives like Buckley and Buchanan, and I hope it goes back to that, rather than the nationalist Sarah Palin wing. In the 80's I was a democrat but could be swayed by republicans of the day because I respected them to some degree. I also like what Ron Paul had to say. The Republicans who just got trounced though, look nothing like 80's reagan republicans. Hopefully they'll take some time to get their ducks in a row and the country will be stronger for it. I worry about the dems suffering the same fate as the repubs. Power corrupts!

How can there be middle-class tax relief? There is no more middle class. It used to be wealth was measured by what you saved, now its measured by what you earn and spend, which is, by-the-way taxed, coming and going. A true utopian society would have NO money to base classes on! Or for that matter, ANY possessions would be a sign of class. So no jobs would be helpful for a true, classless society. See where this ends?

We will allow two classes: Mac and not Mac!

Too many tempting points to argue. While I was only a "luke-warm" Obama supporter, and am more Libertarian than Liberal, I find most of the stereotypical conservative arguments just SO flawed as to be laughable. After I "fixed" my mother's computer yesterday, she asked what I thought of the election. Knowing how HER mother felt about blacks (casual, ignorance and bigotry), I worried about my answer. She later told me her mother must be rolling over in her grave! Guess it's good she died a couple of decades ago, eh?
Anyway.
The President isn't the only one who's messages can be held to the fire. ANY member of the Administration, and any business, needs to maintain e-mails for ... is it seven? ... years. Funny that the RNC never felt obliged to worry about that.
The break-in mentioned was not of their personal computers but of their campaign's servers. If I am recalling the correct incident.
I DO believe that chat and texting - like e-mail - is covered under the same statute, though you might get an argument about that from the out-going Administration.

Nov 17, 08 - 03:46 pm Comment from: Rheinhard

Interesting that none of the right-wingnuts on this board seem interested in commenting on Bush's flagrant disregard for the email preservation laws I cited, which are the nominal reason for Obama to have to wean himself off his personal Crackberry and onto the official, logged & preserved White House email system for official business.

Rove using personal RNC account for White house biz? Great! Staffers calling "Geek Squad" to purge their hard drives? Cool!

Obama may in the FUTURE need to stop using personal Blackberry? WE MUST WATCH THE DEMOCRAT LIKE A HAWK! BRING ON IMPEACHMENT HEARINGS!
