Occipital has released RedLaser 2.2 and update to their accurate UPC/EAN scanning application for the iPhone.
The RedLaser app for Apple iPhone reads the barcode from almost any product and tells you if (and where) it’s available for less.
RedLaser 2.2 is now available for US$1.99 via Apple’s iTunes App Store. RedLaser users can snap a picture of a barcode and search for online product prices using Google product search, or click through to see Amazon results. They can also email a list of scanned products to review later or share with others.
The lack of autofocus has made it extremely difficult to create an accurate scanner for the barcodes most common worldwide – UPC and EAN. In contrast to standard barcode libraries, Occipital’s system mathematically compensates for out-of-focus images, yielding accuracy far beyond anything available today. Occipital’s system removes the need for a macro lens or any other special hardware.
New features/improvements:
• Realtime scanning for EAN and curved codes (Photo scan mode is now gone because it’s not needed).
• Increased speed and less memory usage.
• Emailing occurs within the app – no need to exit.
• Email contains an attachment with a list of barcodes for import into other software.
• “Clear” button to quickly start a new list.
• Setting to turn off autosearch to allow quick scanning of several products to email or search later.
• Manual entry support for 6-8 digit UPCs and 8 digit EANs. These are the only UPC/EAN codes we can’t scan currently. They’re rare, but now you can at least enter them manually if needed.

When do we get our iPhone (or iPod touch) case/credit card reader so that anyone who owns an iPhone also owns a cash register? When does the Apple store get to ditch those damn winmo things?
“RedLaser users can snap a picture of a barcode”
It doesn’t need to snap a photo anymore, just hold the camera up to the bar code and it captures it when it recognizes it. Works great! Haven’t tried it on a non autofocus iPhone yet.
Freakin’ cool!
Is there a Delicious Library iPhone app yet?
This works astonishingly well. I just tried it on a few products around the house. It’s fast and accurate.
There WAS a Delicious LIbrary iPhone app . . . and it’s still present on my 3G. However, it no longer syncs with the desktop application (after the 3.1 update).
I hope things have changed in the last couple of days, but with Amazon’s reluctance to sanction the mobile version of DL for some reason, I kinda’ doubt it.
I tried this on my 3G, and it works great. Quick recognition.
I kept my copy of the DL iPhone app, and will NOT update it. It still syncs fine with the new desktop version of DL.
Will they release a braille version for my iPod touch?
Wonder if it works on my favorite squeeze’s tattooed barcode?
And if it’s less expensive elsewhere?
I can see how this would be useful for non grocery store items unless the search results shows other local markets giving better prices. I’m not sure how finding google results for my peanut butter does me much good.
This is the worst app ever! All I do now is scan shit wherever I am!
LOL – it’s great.
Some odd pricing on Amazon – a box of Pop Tarts for $49?
But otherwise, it rocks.
Just be prepared for being laughed at ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Yes sir, I’d be more than happy to price match Amazon. Just pay me now and come back in five days and you can pick up your merchandise.
Amazing! Too bad all the food in the video is junk.
Just to be sociable, I’m going to barcode myself.
I’d much rather barcode myself than rfid myself.
AMEN!
