A COTA bus can be a very unappealing place full of less than desirable individuals. I would keep anything of value well hidden while on the bus there.

It is a case of ladies and a small child being in possible danger while someone is being violently attacked. I am from Columbus, Ohio and I used to ride the 1 and 16 buses when I was young, you don't know what a person is carrying. Ask yourself this question are if you were a woman and you saw that happen would you think first to protect yourself and the child or to break up a melee which is what that would look like to you if you were there. You guys have obviously never been in a real fight when there wasn't a principal or police officer there to break it up. Anyone else wish they had been on that bus? It makes me angry just watching it. I would have throttled that kid so badly he wouldn't have known what an iPhone was after the beating he took.

FOOL! - That was a big thug - any white or black passengers had only two choices - put up - or shut up. Apparently. no one thought they could beat him so they didnt intervene, even if you were there, you probably woulda got your ass kicked because it was real life, not a reality show. Al Sharpton and others may have rascists ways, but so does the system that will probably give a black guy a harsher sentence because a white guy was involved. Instead of taking sides, and being rascist yourself, how about simply believing a bad person did a bad thing to an average citizen and hope he will be fairly tried and appropriately punished - that should be the american way, truth and justice.

Actually, this is non-news to begin with, this is supposedly an educated forum to discuss deeper topics. Anyone in public should be very low key with valuables, leather coats, jewelry, watches, ipods, etc, anywhere in the world. Aruba? (i think) and other 'resort' places are turning into violent hotspots, you have to be as responsible for your personal safety as possible, people don't even care that your an american, it's no guarantee of safe passage.

Damn, I live in Columbus also and I missed this story. I also frequent both of those bus lines, the 1 more than the 16 (the 1 takes me home and downtown and the 16 takes to my lady friend's house and to Apple Store Easton!).

Now I know I'll have to watch my back once I manifest that new iPhone I've been visualizing, specifically for bus use too.

I didn't know city buses even HAD cameras (that "1984" commercial Big Brother dude is everywhere!). That's actually reassuring for dealing with wanna-be thugs like that punk. He'll be caught before long.

Coincidently, today a white guy was walking down the street in my neighborhood and got mugged by a black guy in the middle of the day.

The victim on bus looks white. Sometimes I wonder if the attack was not just for the iphone , but a chance for the black guy to take out his anger on a white guy

Updates - We have been contacted by the victim. The following was said:

“This was me on the bus that was attacked. The video doesn’t show the fact that the Bus Driver was not on the bus, he actually left the bus to talk to another bus driver. He was off the bus for at least 5-7 mins and this allowed more than enough time for this incident to take place. The attacked lasted 2-3 minutes and they left out the part where I actually grab the guy by his balls and twist and pull them. I am upset because if the bus driver had been on the bus, this never would have happened. Also, the lady with the kid is friends with the guy. The original video shows them talking for a long time, and right before he gets up, she takes her kid and picks him up and moves her next to her.

This was more of a hate crime than it was from him trying to steal my iPhone. If he wanted the iPhone it fell from my hands and slid under the seat. My interview was pulled from the local website possibly because I mentioned hate crime.”

Additional thoughts: We won’t pull the video, but it definitely seems like some “hate-crime-motives” could be involved in this attack. The attack may have been spurred from lust for a gadget the assailant may not be able to attain otherwise. But it definitely seems like it evolved into more of a hate crime than an iPhone robbing.

For everyone saying the other people shouldn't have intervened - they didn't need to intervene physically! They should have started yelling and shouting and trying to get the attention of the bus driver who was off the bus at the time! Read the comments of the guy who got attacked on the link to the video. He says it turned into more of a "beat up a white guy" thing than a robbery. The guy stopped trying to get the iPhone after the first attempt.

If the white guy had started beating the shit out of a black kid for his iPhone, you had better believe those other passenger would have intervened either physically or verbally. To think otherwise, means you are either delusional or haven't spent much time in a large city in the U.S. And, if the bus had been full of white people not intervening in the beating of a black kid by a white kid, you are right - Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have been there the very next day!
