Orange to bring Apple iPhone to Europe, Middle East, Caribbean and Africa
Friday, May 16, 2008 - 08:38 AM EDT

Orange today announced a new agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to Orange customers later this year in:

• Austria
• Belgium
• Dominican Republic
• Egypt
• Jordan
• Poland
• Portugal
• Romania
• Slovakia
• Switzerland
• Orange’s African markets

Orange is the key brand of France Telecom, one of the world’s leading telecommunications operators. France Telecom serves more than 172 million customers in five continents as of March 31, 2008, of which two thirds are Orange customers. The Group had consolidated sales of 52.9 billion euros in 2007 (13 billion euros at March 31, 2008). As of March 31, 2008, the Group had 111.9 million mobile customers and 12 million broadband internet (ADSL) customers. Launched in June 2005, the NExT program (New Experience in Telecommunications) will enable the Group to pursue its transformation as an integrated operator and make France Telecom the benchmark for new telecommunications services in Europe. In 2006, Orange became the Group's single brand for Internet, television and mobile services in the majority of countries where the company operates, and Orange Business Services the banner for services offered to businesses worldwide. France Telecom is the number three mobile operator and the number one provider of broadband internet services in Europe and one of the world leaders in providing telecommunication services to multinational companies. France Telecom (NYSE:FTE) is listed on Euronext Paris and on the New York Stock Exchange.

These guys at Apple are really master marketers.

Without so much as issuing a single press release, they are building market tension and demand for their product through the use of third party announcements. As these announcements dribble out, one by one, it is becoming obvious to anyone paying even a small amount of attention to this, that version 2.0 of the iPhone is going to be a tremendous hit, and the market for software for this item is going to dwarf the Mac market - until developers have realized that developing for the iPhone is not remarkably different from developing for the Mac itself.

Then, Katie, bar the door!

There must be something wrong with Skandinavia since we still has neither iPhone or iTS with movies and tv-shows. Hello! Apple!? Dont forget us up here!

Orange’s African markets include Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire) in West Africa where I am from. Let me tell you:

I was there for my vacation last month and the iPhone (unlocked, of course) was everywhere. So it's a very wise decision to start selling it in Africa, since Orange is there!!!

Apple should customize each iPhone with the countries flag. Then we can collect em all.

You know...10 million does not seem so unreachable after this announcement.

May 16, 08 - 10:50 am Comment from: ralph from berlin

russia and the ukraine have almost 200 million people combined with lots of people with enough disposable income nowadays. i hope apple isn't so arrogant to ignore that just because of outdated preconceptions of these countries being poor.

So, how long do we still have to wait? One week, two weeks, max four weeks? And what countries and carriers are still awaiting the iPhone? Scandinavia, Spain, Telefonica, Russia, China? - That should about cover the waiting time.

MW done

@jasenpheffor, I believe Japan has an all CDMA network, until that changes or Apple can fit dual circuitry in the current design it could be awhile. Most of the world is consolidating around GSM anyway. Even Verizon may be coming around as per pressure from the parent Vodaphone.

May 17, 08 - 12:10 pm Comment from: Vista Pracova

Note that this officially establishes that, at least in some countries, there will not be an exclusive carrier deal (Portugal, Switzerland and Egypt?) as Vodafone as also said that they would be selling the iPhone in those countries.
