Over 5% of MacDailyNews visitors now using iPhone and iPod touch
Tuesday, March 25, 2008 - 11:20 AM EST

In the last 30-days, 5.42% of total MacDailyNews visitors used the following browsers and platforms:

• Safari / iPhone - 4.58%
• Safari / iPod touch - 0.84%

MacDailyNews Note: iPhone shipped on June 29, 2007. iPod touch began shipping on September 13, 2007.

This percentage of mobile Safari visits to our site has grown precipitously over the last few months. We've been watching these stats intently.

We also visit our site via iPhone and EDGE. We know, we know.

Therefore, we are currently in the midst of developing and testing the mobile version of MacDailyNews — optimized for iPhone's and iPod touch's mobile Safari browser.

[UPDATE: 11:47am EDT: Mobile users will always have the option to load the full site if desired.]

Stay tuned, we'll have more details ASAP!

YEY!!! does this mean we wont have those adverts that are more than annoying?

Mar 25, 08 - 10:23 am Comment from: DJ

Will the version for the rest of us be optimized too?

Mar 25, 08 - 10:27 am Comment from: Zeke

Please be careful not to cripple your site with a "mobile" version. Many companies have nearly useless sites when accessed with an iPhone because they assume any mobile device accessing their site has limited capabilities like Windows Mobile devices, so they send you to a "special" (as in short-bus "special") version of their pages. You can, however, delete some of the ads from a mobile version. That would help immensely.

Mar 25, 08 - 10:27 am Comment from: Spark

An optimized site would be welcome. I would use my iPhone more to visit this site if it didn't load so abysmally slow.

Mar 25, 08 - 10:29 am Comment from: eMax

YEY!!! does this mean we wont have those adverts that are more than annoying?

no this means they are going to make the optimized site so the adverts can be seen perfectly on the iphone....

:-(

Mar 25, 08 - 10:29 am Comment from: tmsruge

About damned time!

mcmyke, you wish. Read what they said "...developing and testing the mobile version"..... actually means, we are trying to figure out how to monetize this new trend.

I'll stand corrected if it's ad free! But me doubts that's possible.

Mar 25, 08 - 10:29 am Comment from: Dirty Pierre le Punk

MDN could do worse than taking a design lead from Sky's iPhone site (http://news.sky.com/skynews/iphone/home)

It loads quickly, is formatted for fast info finding and, yes, even manages to fit in revenue making ads that don't impede site usage.

Mar 25, 08 - 10:30 am Comment from: JoeMac

Well, I guess this is a step in the right direction. We'll see.

Right now, MDN is one of the very WORST sites to try to visit on the iPhone. Shame...

Mar 25, 08 - 10:34 am Comment from: scattershooting

ATTENTION!!!!!!

MDN EDITORS, could you PLEASE develop an iPhone friendly web site. I don't know about everyone else, but MDN loads soooo slow on my MBP and my iPhone. A web page optimized for the iphone would be a great for people like me who check it 5-10 times daily.

Thanks.

Mar 25, 08 - 10:39 am Comment from: Pirata

I want an MDN-site with NO pop-unders!

Mar 25, 08 - 10:40 am Comment from: HotinPlaya

Is there a way to find a list of "iPhone" friendly web sites?

Mar 25, 08 - 10:42 am Comment from: tmsruge

Pure Pain, I see what you did there.... niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!

Mar 25, 08 - 10:43 am Comment from: gregr209

Can't wait. MDN is sooooooooo painful loading over EDGE!

Mar 25, 08 - 10:43 am Comment from: Buster

Sadly I am not among the 5% as iPhones are not in Canada and my daughter won't let me play with her iPod touch.

Sucks to be me!

Mar 25, 08 - 10:43 am Comment from: E. David Zotter

That's because macdailynews.com is the exact opposite when it comes to Apple in design.

It is possible to read the news on an iPhone without all these ridiculous pop-ups and other advertising clutter.

A few ads are okay to support your site. However, when there are more ads than news, you have a problem.

Seriously, macdailynews.com, get a clue. Less is more.

AND IT IS UNGODLY SLOW!!!!

i often set my phone down and pick it back up in a couple minutes waiting for MDN to load.

Mar 25, 08 - 10:44 am Comment from: Norm

Please make sure it's easy to use the regular site on an iPhone if we prefer it. Thanks!

Mar 25, 08 - 10:45 am Comment from: The Other Steve

Yes, scattershooting, MDN does load far too slow. Using RSS (at least for the home page) does help. Especially when using the iPhone.

Mar 25, 08 - 10:47 am Comment from: TowerTone

MDN still won't accept my iPhone post under "PowerPhone".

Mar 25, 08 - 10:48 am Comment from: Jesus

and it's the slowest site i visit for news..

Mar 25, 08 - 10:48 am Comment from: iWill

Count me in!

Sent from my iPhone. (^_^)

Mar 25, 08 - 10:51 am Comment from: Raymond from DC

These statistics suggest iPod Touch is selling in far lower numbers than iPhone. I find that surprising. Not only is the Touch usable and available world-wide, but it meets the needs of those who really don't need the phone and the monthly expenses. (Me, I'm just waiting for the 16 GB version to drop to $299, replacing the 8 GB model.)

Mar 25, 08 - 10:54 am Comment from: Jay-Z

I stopped bothering with MDN on my iPhone. Loads too slowly and has too many ads. Not worth the effort.

Mar 25, 08 - 10:56 am Comment from: PowerPhone

cool. Thanks

Mar 25, 08 - 10:59 am Comment from: alansky

Tthe percentage of MDN visitors who own an iPhone or iPod Touch is probably significantly greater. Not everyone wants to read tech news on a 3.5-inch screen; but it's great to see more content providers rolling out mobile versions of their websites. This development is sure to increase the percentage of iPhone and iPod Touch users who do access the web with these devices.

Mar 25, 08 - 11:00 am Comment from: baritus

Most of these comments are fair bit the main thing is MDN appear to be trying to fix things. Let's hope ASAP works out less than a month or 2.

Mar 25, 08 - 11:02 am Comment from: alansky

P.S. Just a word of protest about the proliferation (on the web in general, not just on the MDN website) of the obnoxious ads that pop up whenever the cursor rolls over certain underlined keywords. May this disgusting technology go away as fast as it arrived!

Mar 25, 08 - 11:04 am Comment from: F1Mikal

How many of us have clicked on an ad?

What percentage will it take for them to realise that it aint worth it.
Cuz we are here for the news. And the banter amongst ourselves.

Mar 25, 08 - 11:10 am Comment from: Sum Jung Gai

Uh, MDN... Can something really grow precipitously? I would think you could drop precipitously, but not grow that way. What with being about falling off a precipice and all.

Also, my MDN Magic Word (“thats”) isn't really a word.

What's going on here?

Mar 25, 08 - 11:12 am Comment from: JM

MDN is by far one of the worst sites on the Internet for ads. They look awful, there are too many and right now there are 3 different ads for the same product (MacBook Air).

If they could ad a video ad that loads and plays automatically when you bring up the site, then it could be officially the worst.

Mar 25, 08 - 11:18 am Comment from: IEEE1394®

@MDN

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help out.

Mar 25, 08 - 11:22 am Comment from: OBill-Wan Kenobi

Over 5%? Why, that's an outrageous exaggeration!

Sent from my iPhone.

Mar 25, 08 - 11:34 am Comment from: OpJ

Seriously, the biggest problem MDN will have with an iphone friendly entry is everyone switching over to that to view the site.

I'm just waiting to hear that Skynet forms from MDN's ad servers getting together...

Mar 25, 08 - 11:52 am Comment from: Krquet

This just inspired me to visit this site via my iPhone. However, I still prefer desktop access to this site - Ubuntu from work and xp from home. I think this is the longest I've typed on my iPhone.

Mar 25, 08 - 12:11 pm Comment from: 2Many2Much

Has anyone ever clicked on an ad at MDN?

It is one of the slowest, if not slowest, loading sites I visit.

Mar 25, 08 - 12:14 pm Comment from: olternaut

What the hell do you need with a "mobile" version of the site? The freakin devices are designed to load a full version of a website.
I will not be using any "mobile" version of any site with them....period.

Mar 25, 08 - 12:43 pm Comment from: The Dude

Started checking out MDN from my new Touch last week.... load time is not that bad.

The Dude abides.

Mar 25, 08 - 12:47 pm Comment from: Glenn

I completely agree. There needs to be a cut-down version for the iPhone. The only way I read MacDailyNews now is via Google Reader for mobile because it loads 10 times faster.

Mar 25, 08 - 12:47 pm Comment from: MikeH

Dirty
Thanks for the tip on Sky News; nice and clean, easy to find articles.

Mar 25, 08 - 12:48 pm Comment from: MR

How 'bout just making the MDN RSS feed show full articles?

You can do inline ads still...

RSS should be a killer app on slower, mobile networks...

Mar 25, 08 - 12:56 pm Comment from: twilightmoon

This number would be higher if MDN didn't suck so horribly on the iPhone..

A frozen dead slug slithers uphill over flypaper faster than MDN loads.

Mar 25, 08 - 01:14 pm Comment from: gedboy

The MDN site on Edge: slower than a week in the Bar-L. Without Edge... slooooooow

Mar 25, 08 - 01:25 pm Comment from: MacDailyNews Webmaster

MDN via EDGE is slower than Steve Ballmer.

We understand. We are working to address the issue.

Thank you for the, uh, constructive criticism.

Mar 25, 08 - 01:28 pm Comment from: iPhone User

The Dude,
Started checking out MDN from my new Touch last week.... load time is not that bad.

You're using Wi-Fi, we're talking EDGE here.

Wi-Fi access for MDN via iPhone is acceptable. EDGE is painful.

Maybe we should blame AT&T;and poer-hungry 3G chip designs for this?

Mar 25, 08 - 01:54 pm Comment from: ThunkDifferent.com

Thunk is one of them, thanks for all the updates, fun site, lots of good community, long live the apple community (as long as it is good) http://ThunkDifferent.com

Mar 25, 08 - 01:59 pm Comment from: Gman

watch your stats really zoom, when you get a "friendly" site - friendly as in any browser friendly...as is, it's becoming less and less friendly...

oddly, though I still come here.

smile

Mar 25, 08 - 02:06 pm Comment from: Big Al

How can you complain about the ads on this site when, if they weren't there, you wouldn't have a site called MDN to visit.

Next time anyone buys anything online, especially from Apple, try to click through a MDN advert first.

Mar 25, 08 - 03:17 pm Comment from: mike k.

adsubtract + Safari = the old days of MDN, before they sold out and started being a mouthpiece for the republican party.
