Parallels to intro virtualization software for Intel-based Macs
Tuesday, April 04, 2006 - 09:21 AM EST

"Virtualisation software company Parallels said it will announce a virtualisation product for Intel-powered Macs, with more details becoming available later this week," Manek Dubash reports for Techworld. "According to spokesman Ben Rudolph: 'We will enable users to run multiple operating systems (like Linux and Windows) simultaneously with Mac OS X. This is not simply a 'dual-boot' but instead gives our users the ability to use Windows or any other operating system at the same time as Mac OS X, enabling users to enjoy the comfort of their Mac OS X desktop while still being able to use critical applications from other OSes.'"

Hope it works well.

but isnt this to be a part of leopard anyway?

Apr 04, 06 - 09:56 am Comment from: MacDoctor

Running Windows or Linux apps as easily as Mac apps without installing Windows or Linux would be much better!

Apr 04, 06 - 09:57 am Comment from: software engineer

Will be interesting to see how they accomplish this!

Apr 04, 06 - 10:00 am Comment from: ndelc

"but isnt this to be a part of leopard anyway?"

There have been rumors that it will, but remember, that's the same rumor mill that said Steve would be announcing 52" HDTV Macs back in January.

Let's put it this way, they guy who works in the sandwich shop said we'd be able to run Windows software in Leopard.

Apr 04, 06 - 10:04 am Comment from: Macaday

Fine if you have to. I wouldn't for one minute be happy compromising my workday by adding Win to my Mac computers. Whatever anyone says it can't do your computer any good.

After all, if Windows were really meant to be on a personal computer, it wouldn't have been made by Microshite...

Apr 04, 06 - 10:05 am Comment from: AL

I just hope it keeps windows in its own "sandbox" and away from the rest of OS X.

I don't want a virus or a worm running in a virtualization engine ruining my mac.

Apr 04, 06 - 10:06 am Comment from: war

Ah, the myths slip even further away...

My X86 is more powerful than PowerPC (GONE)
Macs are much more expensive (GONE)
the mac can't run my windows only programs (GONE)

Seems like Jobs & Co. are getting rid of everything stopping someone from switching (especially if this virtualiztion stuff is standard in Leopard)

These are interesting times...

>Running Windows or Linux apps as easily as Mac apps without installing >Windows or Linux would be much better!

Yeah. That would be nice. Good luck maintaining everything, though.

In fact, there are lots of complex installations that really would benefit from this virtualization. If there's easy copy/paste between OSs, this will be great.

>but isnt this to be a part of leopard anyway?

Rumor != shipping product - which I will be happy to buy _now_ rather than waiting until end of 06/beginning of 07.

I'm hoping they use the Core Duo virtualization (Vanderpool) functionality - seems like it would help a lot.

Apr 04, 06 - 10:10 am Comment from: pat

I think virtualization will kick dual-boot's butt. It would be an amazing loss of productivity to have to stop everything and reboot to run an app, and then do it all again in reverse when you're done.

This isn't the 80's with boot floppies where you reboot the computer every time you want to change tasks. Let me have apps side by side so I can move information between them!

MW = possible!

Apr 04, 06 - 10:17 am Comment from: Dutch

This is great news. It would be even better if Parallels announced support for VMWare image files (they just announced that the format is now open) since this is what I use at my day job to prepare product presentations. If this happens I will finally be able to leave my IBM laptop at my office and once again live in a PC-less home grin

Apr 04, 06 - 10:21 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1

Dual boot would be pointless for me. I need to use one Windows only app, everything else is Office, mail, web and other stuff I can do on a mac but I need to be able to copy stuff from that app to mail and the others. With Dual boot I can't and even forgetting the interaction between apps, I still need to just use mail, office and so on and there's is no way I'm gonne login and out dozens of times a day and have to save my work all the time just to use OSX for a few minutes. It's great but not that great.

This would be interesting.

Keyword: "Russian-developed"

Does that sound like any software you'd install? "You need my password to install? Sure, here's my password. I don't mind that your software loads on boot and sends you a log of every keystroke I type. You need that for testing purposes right?"

Apr 04, 06 - 10:51 am Comment from: Noraa Haras

I agree with Tommy-boy about the Russian bit. It's too bad for them. Parallels is probably a prefectly legit company (I have no information), but they have an uphill battle in Western corporation. Maybe the switch to Mac will work out for them.

I look forward to playing my PC games on my MacBook Pro.

Just as soon as I get it back from repairs from Apple. Quality, quality, quality Apple! Ah well, they're taking care of business.

What about vira in a virtualized environment? If you get Wine running without windows, will the vira run too?

Apr 04, 06 - 11:01 am Comment from: Drunk Cheney

Regarding the sandwich guy -

Are his sandwiches as good as his rumors?
smile

Apr 04, 06 - 11:52 am Comment from: truth hurts

Attention all commenters: are you paying attention? Leopard is destined to be the last cat out of Apple's bag - after that, Steve's company will be selling shiny big boxes and skinny laptops running Vista and its successors.

And, of course, the cutest tunes players you can find anywhere.

Apr 04, 06 - 11:57 am Comment from: R

MacDu... sorry, 'truth hurts' - April fool's is over mate.

Apr 04, 06 - 12:12 pm Comment from: ndelc

Good question Drunk Cheney. I dunno. Jason O'Grady's sandwich guy/Mac Guru works at someplace called Wawa. Don't have 'em here in New Mexico and my guy at Los Cuates only knows Linux rumors : )

Apr 04, 06 - 12:17 pm Comment from: King Mel

Apple provided an option fairly close to a 52" HDTV Mac, ndel. Get a core solo or duo Mac mini with the bluetooth keyboard/mouse and hook it up to your large LCD or plasma screen or LCD/DLP/LCOS projection set.

"Parallels to intro virtualization"

Sounds like a undergrad course in metaphysics. Didn't Leibniz have a theory on the parallels to intro-virtualization as a paradigm for a posteriori suppositions?

Apr 04, 06 - 01:33 pm Comment from: ndelc

Hmmm....a computer built into a 52" monitor (essentially a GIANT iMac) vs. a computer that you supply a monitor of any size to extra? Not quite the same thing.

Apr 04, 06 - 07:55 pm Comment from: American in Japan

Parellel's Configuration Editor page looks really similar to Vmware's. smile The only reason I haven't purchased a new Apple MacBookPro is no Vmware support (yet) or support from a company who's product works half as good as VMware. Any one tried this Parellel product on Windoze machine's yet?

Apr 04, 06 - 08:02 pm Comment from: American in Japan

Hhhmm...just had a thought...wonder if Microsoft or EMC (VMware) has any interest in buying this company. If so, I hope it's EMC. Microsoft's Virtual PC sucks!

Apr 04, 06 - 08:07 pm Comment from: American in Japan

...on 2nd thought, that might be a bad idea. They'll raise the damn price to $400!

Apr 05, 06 - 03:55 pm Comment from: Stuart

Ah, that's why this virtualisation software company "Parallels" was going to release more information "later" - they were waiting for 'Boot Camp' to be announced by Apple, as this provides BIOS support for Windows, and presumably other OSs which need BIOS.

So if you need to dual boot, use Boot Camp, if you need realtime switching within OS X, buy the Parallels software.

Apr 06, 06 - 07:12 am Comment from: American in Japan

The Beta is out. Anyone tried it yet? I'm going to give it a shot...when I get my new machine in a few days. :(
