Parallels to intro virtualization software for Intel-based Macs

“Virtualisation software company Parallels said it will announce a virtualisation product for Intel-powered Macs, with more details becoming available later this week,” Manek Dubash reports for Techworld. “According to spokesman Ben Rudolph: ‘We will enable users to run multiple operating systems (like Linux and Windows) simultaneously with Mac OS X. This is not simply a ‘dual-boot’ but instead gives our users the ability to use Windows or any other operating system at the same time as Mac OS X, enabling users to enjoy the comfort of their Mac OS X desktop while still being able to use critical applications from other OSes.'”

  1. “but isnt this to be a part of leopard anyway?”

There have been rumors that it will, but remember, that’s the same rumor mill that said Steve would be announcing 52″ HDTV Macs back in January.

Let’s put it this way, they guy who works in the sandwich shop said we’d be able to run Windows software in Leopard.

  2. Fine if you have to. I wouldn’t for one minute be happy compromising my workday by adding Win to my Mac computers. Whatever anyone says it can’t do your computer any good.

After all, if Windows were really meant to be on a personal computer, it wouldn’t have been made by Microshite…

  3. Ah, the myths slip even further away…

My X86 is more powerful than PowerPC (GONE)
Macs are much more expensive (GONE)
the mac can’t run my windows only programs (GONE)

Seems like Jobs & Co. are getting rid of everything stopping someone from switching (especially if this virtualiztion stuff is standard in Leopard)

    These are interesting times…

  4. >Running Windows or Linux apps as easily as Mac apps without installing >Windows or Linux would be much better!

Yeah. That would be nice. Good luck maintaining everything, though.

In fact, there are lots of complex installations that really would benefit from this virtualization. If there’s easy copy/paste between OSs, this will be great.

    >but isnt this to be a part of leopard anyway?

Rumor != shipping product – which I will be happy to buy _now_ rather than waiting until end of 06/beginning of 07.

I’m hoping they use the Core Duo virtualization (Vanderpool) functionality – seems like it would help a lot.

  5. I think virtualization will kick dual-boot’s butt. It would be an amazing loss of productivity to have to stop everything and reboot to run an app, and then do it all again in reverse when you’re done.

This isn’t the 80’s with boot floppies where you reboot the computer every time you want to change tasks. Let me have apps side by side so I can move information between them!

    MW = possible!

  6. This is great news. It would be even better if Parallels announced support for VMWare image files (they just announced that the format is now open) since this is what I use at my day job to prepare product presentations. If this happens I will finally be able to leave my IBM laptop at my office and once again live in a PC-less home ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  7. Dual boot would be pointless for me. I need to use one Windows only app, everything else is Office, mail, web and other stuff I can do on a mac but I need to be able to copy stuff from that app to mail and the others. With Dual boot I can’t and even forgetting the interaction between apps, I still need to just use mail, office and so on and there’s is no way I’m gonne login and out dozens of times a day and have to save my work all the time just to use OSX for a few minutes. It’s great but not that great.

    This would be interesting.

  8. Keyword: “Russian-developed”

Does that sound like any software you’d install? “You need my password to install? Sure, here’s my password. I don’t mind that your software loads on boot and sends you a log of every keystroke I type. You need that for testing purposes right?”

  9. I agree with Tommy-boy about the Russian bit. It’s too bad for them. Parallels is probably a prefectly legit company (I have no information), but they have an uphill battle in Western corporation. Maybe the switch to Mac will work out for them.

I look forward to playing my PC games on my MacBook Pro.

Just as soon as I get it back from repairs from Apple. Quality, quality, quality Apple! Ah well, they’re taking care of business.

  10. Attention all commenters: are you paying attention? Leopard is destined to be the last cat out of Apple’s bag – after that, Steve’s company will be selling shiny big boxes and skinny laptops running Vista and its successors.

And, of course, the cutest tunes players you can find anywhere.

  11. Good question Drunk Cheney. I dunno. Jason O’Grady’s sandwich guy/Mac Guru works at someplace called Wawa. Don’t have ’em here in New Mexico and my guy at Los Cuates only knows Linux rumors : )

  12. Apple provided an option fairly close to a 52″ HDTV Mac, ndel. Get a core solo or duo Mac mini with the bluetooth keyboard/mouse and hook it up to your large LCD or plasma screen or LCD/DLP/LCOS projection set.

  13. “Parallels to intro virtualization”

Sounds like a undergrad course in metaphysics. Didn’t Leibniz have a theory on the parallels to intro-virtualization as a paradigm for a posteriori suppositions?

  14. Parellel’s Configuration Editor page looks really similar to Vmware’s. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> The only reason I haven’t purchased a new Apple MacBookPro is no Vmware support (yet) or support from a company who’s product works half as good as VMware. Any one tried this Parellel product on Windoze machine’s yet?
