PC Magazine reviews Apple Mac mini: ‘Worth putting on your short list’
Friday, February 08, 2008 - 04:56 PM EDT

"The Apple Mac mini has been around in one form or another for almost three years, and while the internal components have changed, the general concept and overall design has stayed the same. Pricing starts at $599, but the one we looked at is the upgraded 2-GHz $799 model. It's one of the forerunners of the green PC, having gone through several generations of substituting energy-efficient notebook-class components for desktop parts since the G4-powered Mac minis of early 2005. The Mac mini has been the lower-priced, entry-level Mac, but now that it's equipped with the Core 2 Duo processors, it is as powerful as a larger desktop while retaining its power (and space) savings," Joel Santo Domingo reports in a review dated today for PC Magazine. "The Apple Mac mini appeals to both space-constrained and green-thinking PC users."

"Compared with [PC] systems... the Mac mini is much smaller and has the benefit of being both a Mac OS X and a Windows PC," Santo Domingo reports.

"The Apple Mac mini continues to be an energy-efficient computer as well as a design statement. It's an attractive alternative to Windows Vista PCs, even those with small form factors, since it's a visual, technological, and spiritual match for the iPods in millions of pockets worldwide. It's worth putting on your short list," Santo Domingo reports.

They're just now reviewing it??

Feb 08, 08 - 06:04 pm Comment from: Tom V

Yawn... Who cares! (well i guess I should since I'm a shareholder)... But seriously. OLD NEWS

Feb 08, 08 - 06:24 pm Comment from: Uh Oh

That's a computer? All this time I thought it was an overpriced paperweight and/or door stopper.

Feb 08, 08 - 06:37 pm Comment from: inWaiting

When is Apple going to update this machine? I'm patiently waiting for that day. Hopefully its one of the announcements this month. My current mini is waiting for a companion.

Feb 08, 08 - 07:00 pm Comment from: I concur

I'm with inWaiting. I've been waiting for 802.11n and GMA X3100 graphics for what seems like an eternity now. In my mind, thats really the last thing keeping it from becoming a totally boss HTPC solution.

Feb 08, 08 - 07:02 pm Comment from: Grifterus

Apple's "little kid" is often overlooked, but I still believe it's a remarkable piece of engineering and design. It's beautiful, small, perfect for most users... I don't know. I don't have enough word to highlight how much I like the Mac Mini.

Feb 08, 08 - 07:08 pm Comment from: smackman

I have to say though, I hope they never get rid of it. the form factor of that machine is perfect for so many things its uncanny.

Here's to hoping.

Have they seen the All-in-One iMac!

It's a revolution!

I've got a G4 Dual 450 they can review....

Feb 08, 08 - 07:47 pm Comment from: Tommyr

Mac Minis RULE. My PPC Mini runs 24/7 for the past nearly 3 years now.

Feb 08, 08 - 07:59 pm Comment from: wayne thompson

I have mac mini just a core dual 1.66 and runs window better than my two year old dell xps. I did have some problems with speed using parallel but change to fusion really rock and also run under leopard with boot camp with about the same speed, for those who want to know parallel has to many issues speed and slow also slow fixing problem and will have you change many setup options but they only help a little. More people who do not need ichat should start looking at the mini I the expensive pc and only use them for a tivo backup.

"It's worth putting on your short list"?

It's actually on my long list of pricey, pretentious and proprietary Apple gear NOT to buy. Hey Apple, have you ever heard of beige? Worse, the mini looks like the power brick for my Dell Ditty charger. Fugly. How about this little puppy powered by magnificent Microsoft Vista Home Premium with Media Center? Freakin' sweet! You can put the MAC Mini on the endangered species list.

Feb 08, 08 - 08:22 pm Comment from: bioness

they ought to put dual displays in the mac mini, then it'll sell fast

Feb 08, 08 - 08:30 pm Comment from: Hg Wells

ZT, the far more expensive MC doesn't even come with a wireless card. What's this about the Mini being "pricey"?

The Mini does need updating though.

Beige. Funny. Thanks.

Feb 08, 08 - 08:34 pm Comment from: Heh

It's definitely short, I'll grant 'em that.

Feb 08, 08 - 08:56 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

I'd like one to strap to the back of my 1080p HDTV... now THAT'S what TV should be!

Feb 08, 08 - 09:11 pm Comment from: Tom V

They should make a 12 volt version with a standard video out so I can hook it up to the tv/nav in my car

Feb 08, 08 - 09:30 pm Comment from: Rainer

My G4 Mini is showing its age.
But it's sort-of-OK for email, web and a little OmniGraffle.
Big PDFs are slow, though.
I'm not sure if they'll update the Mini to SantaRosa.
Equipped with 4 GB RAM and a big notebook-drive, it would be a big rival for the iMacs - at least for people like me who don't play games and thus don't really need the ATI card.
I'd buy an iMac - but I already have a 24" Dell display.
So, I wait wink

Feb 08, 08 - 09:48 pm Comment from: G Spank

I think it's AWESOME that they reviewed it. It deserves another look, and for someone to write about that is thoughtful.

Feb 08, 08 - 10:23 pm Comment from: Schuimpje

@ Tommyr, Mac Minis RULE. My PPC Mini runs 24/7 for the past nearly 3 years now....

Same here, bought it in Feb'05 (PPC 1.6 with all options) and has been on 24/7 ever since. Not a single glitch or problem. And that's under hot conditions, running in a non-aircon office that is normally at 85F minimum.
Best machine I've ever seen and used. With Leopard on it, I don't even care about the 'BYOKM' stuff. Simply run and use it from my Powerbook. Use it as our office-server, it just works...

Feb 08, 08 - 10:38 pm Comment from: Suggestion

Put an HDMI output on it with a real graphics chip and I'll buy one.

No Vampire Video for me

Feb 08, 08 - 10:45 pm Comment from: drbyers

I can tell young most of you noobz are in here.

It wasn't to lomg ago that apple users screamed up and down that peecee magazines didn't review ANY apple product -- EVER.

And when they did, they always gave it the old overpriced, underclocked, worthless for gaming routine.

Noobz...

Feb 09, 08 - 12:59 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

@ drbyers

"…they always gave it the old overpriced, underclocked, worthless for gaming routine."

That routine never got old. It's as fresh today as it was 20 years ago. I still get choked up every time one of my Windows enthusiast counterparts posts a comment to a story or forum to the effect that MACs are slow, expensive, proprietary and can't play games. Like the crappy MAC Mini in this review. MAC users will always be smug dorks too.

@ Dear Comrade Tang
hmm...sounds somewhat Korean wink

$1199 for WMCPC? is that Yen! No wireless included, I ruv it; easier to monitor (I mean protect) the DPRK workers from outside interference. Again same with lack of Bluetooth, we don't need it here anyways because no power to charge BT devices. Well at reast you can sit on the antenna and get off.

DPRK's second favorite dictator™, (oops) I mean beruved reader (f-ing MS spell check) after my father the eternal president, Kim il sung

My Macmini is great. Hooked up to my tv I use it as a dvd player, recording from tv through elgatos eyetv and I also have all my photos so we can watch them on the widescreen. Also I bought a 1 tb external drive for home videos, also great on the widescreen, my kids love watching movies from when they were small. True it's not the fastest machine for graphic heavy work or managng a large iTunes library, but for what it does it's great. People who come over even have a hard time believing it's a computer since they have a big-ass computer at home.

Feb 09, 08 - 05:23 am Comment from: almux

The Mini is just perfect for secretary. It's also the best thing you can see on a doctor's, lawyer's, notary's or else smart and efficient manager's desk.

Zune Tang®

Yeah yeah yeah! We've heard it all before from you too. All you want to do is screw Dell users with Vista. One of these days your life will improve too.

Your passion, needs to improve your potential!

I bought two Mac Mini computers for the office and have been very pleased with both of them. One runs Windows XP about 99% of the time (bookkeeping) and does so without a hiccup. I recently bought a third Mini to run the telescope and cameras in my amateur astronomical observatory (http://www.macastronomy.com). I love the fact that it is quiet, takes up very little space, and has lots of USB ports.

Feb 09, 08 - 02:12 pm Comment from: Cubert

I hope they never get rid of the Mac Mini. It has to attract at least some switchers who already have a monitor.

Feb 09, 08 - 04:18 pm Comment from: bobchr

@ Mr Reese been there done that before there was an Apple TV. Recently upgraded the Mac Mini to the latest and will throw on a Blue Ray Player. Hooked to my 50" plasma and Elgato EYE TV powered by a Hi def antenna on the roof of my building. Just got the Apple TV to compliment the system although I didn't need to. Rented a few movies by itunes looked pretty cool.

Feb 09, 08 - 05:03 pm Comment from: Hercule Eelbait

Will buy one as soon as they update...

Feb 11, 08 - 05:10 am Comment from: YoYo

I forgot to bring a 1GB RAM stick for my mom's MacMini G4. My computer geek cousin said it's broken, which is true, it has only 256MB as it's used only for Skype and watching DVDs on a 40" LCD. Quite amazing how 256MB of memory can make MM worthless, the CPU is running at 30% capacity while the HD in/out window looks like techno beat. About as bad as her neigbors's Vista with 1GB of RAM in 1,5 year old HP laptop.

There is no other computer which blends into the Scandinavian style living room than the MacMini, most people don't even realize it's a computer.

Feb 17, 08 - 02:12 am Comment from: Marko

I'm with InWaiting and I concur. The moment they produce a Mac Mini with 802.11n and updated graphics I'll be placing my order.
