The ONLY Microsoft product to hit the list was Windows Media Player.

To add insult to injury, several of the products were security related products or utilities needed just to get XP to work..sort of.

Oh wow. What was the competition? MS didn't even release their product.

Way to go Apple! You finished first because you were the only entrant this year!

Apple zealots. LOL

Well Stan,
There are multiple media players in the market. Products like RealPlayer, Winamp, Musicmatch. So Apple wasn't the only entrant by any means. Maybe the only one that is usable, but not the only one.

PC idiots. LOL

I am the real stantheman. I do use exclaimations, if necessary. You mac trolls are trolling with my name now.

What is this, 3rd grade? What did I expect from people that get one button mice by default. Even Apple doesn't trust you Macheads to be able to use more then one mouse button at a time.

stannieboy ...

isn't this what MS submitted this year?

http://www.connectedhomemag.com/HomeOffice/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=46181&#C;omments;Déjà Vu All Over Again
... Flash forward to this year's WinHEC 2005. Longhorn is in complete disarray and in danger of collapsing under its own weight: Since WinHEC 2004, Microsoft hasn't shipped a single public beta release of the product, which is now delayed until late 2006. Now, we get a new build of Longhorn, finally, but it's surprisingly similar to the version we got last year. In fact, it's almost less exciting, because it looks more like the existing Windows version—Windows XP—than the year-ago version did. You can literally see the backtracking. ...

tra la la la la

it's not like I really care, stannieboy ... but I just know you're going to have something sparkling to say in return.

Oh stop all the fighting.
As a loyal user of both OSs, PC World have got it right - right now, at this moment in time, there is nothing, nothing out there that even remotely compares to Tiger - that I have seen anyway. It is beautiful, it is clean, functional and on and on. XP does not hold a candle to this whatsoever.
However, Longhorn will be a major - (read - ground-breaking) release that will probably blow us all away just as Tiger does now.
I am pretty sure that even a few Mac-only people may be surprised at the feature-set, and interface yet to come.
I, for one, believe the wait will be worth it.
Microsoft - the pressure is on......

Apple Quicktime is one of the least user friendly media players out there. I would say RealPlayer is probably the only player thats worse in user friendliness. Both have god awful, often inaccurate search buttons. Quicktime especially has some annoying cue/search lag on certain vids (the same vids that play flawlessly on WM with quicktime codecs). Hate microsoft all you want, but they've certainly had the best free media player for some time now.

you know to say that Longhorn is going to be "groundbreaking" -- "amazing", compared to Tiger ..is like saying XP is "groundbreaking", "amazing" , next to Panther...ummm, yea, right..if history repeats itself, MS will get a decent upgrade -- but way short of "groundbreaking"--- if you really want groundbreaking -- look no futher than Mac OS X and beyond.

Don't waste your breath Sammy. Apple is sacred cow around here. And we are a bunch of Hindus...

We "windows" users are untouchables around here. I guess there is no room for the egalitarian worldview that Microsoft has for this world.

Hmm. Using two buttons at a time....also known as "chording". Do it every day with my dandy Kensington Mouse. Fabulous driver, lets me assign my Exposé commands to my many buttons, with different configurations for each app if I want.

As I mentioned, I give full credit to Applr for Tiger - it's amazing. I absolutely love it. And I'm sure Apple's next release will be equally good.
But why can you not in turn, accept that for the first time in a long time Microsoft is losing market share, (and this id going to continue to happen hopefully in a big way) to Apple and will be putting everything they have into it. I believe it will be good - very good.
From the first beta I saw, I loved the look and feel of it, much as I like Tiger.
Let's wait and see instead of continung to bash them - then you can say "I told you so." There is a possibility you will be wrong you know.
"Groundbreaking - it will be", said Yoda.

Apple 10.4.1 vs. Windows XP

What the hell is Longhorn? It doesn't exist. It's not a product. Apple is so much better than the best product Microsoft has to offer it's a joke. People like Stan are just very jealous that they're stuck on the piece of sht platform, XP. Glad you have to use XP Stan. Have fun patching your patches and removing your spyware.

"Oh wow. What was the competition? MS didn't even release their product.

Precisely, you blithering idiot! Microsoft hasn't even released a beta version of Longhorn.

It should be patently obvious to anyone with a single functional brain cell that Microsoft's inability to provide an OS to compare to Tiger is tacit admission of their pathetic failure to innovate and develop workable, much less elegant, software.

Jun 01, 05 - 05:21 pm Comment from: bob

The only "egalitarian worldview that Microsoft has for this world" is that everyone should be using Windows. Luckily some of us disagree. And the award was for best OS, not best NEW OS, so it's no good claiming that M$ didn't win because they don't have a new product. They didn't win because they don't have the best product. Period.
Lest we forget, Panther won last year too...http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,116015,pg,4,00.asp

Hey Sammy to continue from our other thread...

I'd refute your points if you had any but their opinion, yours, not points.

USB - I never said Apple invented it no one here said that either , it's your opinion that we think that. We have stated That Apple Popularized it this is fact (unlike your fiction)

From Answers.com:
A 3rd party cottage industry sprung up around the iMac. Via the USB port, hardware makers could make products compatible with both PC and Macintosh (sometimes Macintosh driver software was required).

Before the iMac was released, Windows-based machines shipped with both USB and legacy connections, providing little incentive for 3rd party hardware manufacturers to create USB peripherals. Therefore, the iMac is credited with the proliferation of USB devices, also allowing current Macintosh users to have a large selection of cheap devices such as hubs, scanners, storage devices mice, and cables.

Oddly, although USB was also available on the PC, many of these USB peripherals were made of translucent coloured plastic, a trend that still continues.

After the iMac, Apple continued to remove legacy peripheral connections and floppy drives from the rest of its product line; and other computer makers have started to follow suit.

geez, if you want something factual to rant about why not mention that Apple was behind the implementation of CD burners? (we had DVD players and DVD-RAM drives as standards at this time), at least then I would have some respect for your opinion.

Next...

Water cooling Chips - no one said Apple invented or popularized it, just you and you provide no back up to claim their reasons for using it other than the obvious - cooling the CPU - no point just your opinion

Widescreen Laptop - Apple was the first to bring it to market, that's fact nothing you can do about it other than say it was inevitable - no point just opinion

Ad Ban "The ban was held because the "claims" by Apple inferred the server market as well" - wrong as usual (do you ever speak in truth?)
The ban was because of the claim of "World's fastest personal computer" No server is mentioned whatsoever.

"They did their own benchmarks with fuzzy numbers" that's funny I could have sworn it was done by an independent firm - oh wait it was. - see this for more: http://news.com.com/Apple+TV+ad+banned+in+U.K./2100-1042_3-5105661.html

Yeah it's tough times all right, press accolades, awards, leading the way in OS, Music and technology while the competition tries to play catchup. yeah tough times. Well I think I've trounced you enough, bye!

mmmmm flamebait.. *droool...

Mac OS is the sacred cow here..... and around the offices of PC World Magazine.

Imagine that.. an alternative to a monopolist.

Question, from a profit-maximization point of view, what motivation does a monopolist have to innovate beyond the mediocrity of the status-quo?

"USB - I never said Apple invented it no one here said that either , it's your opinion that we think that. We have stated That Apple Popularized it this is fact (unlike your fiction)"

OK Mac Zealot, now take a look at another one of your statements:

"Widescreen Laptop - Apple was the first to bring it to market, that's fact nothing you can do about it other than say it was inevitable - no point just opinion"

You see the descrepancy there? Your obvious fanboy zeal overemphasizes the significance of the iMac bringing USB into the "mainstream", yet severely downplays, and outright accuses, the PC sector of "stealing innovation" with the advent of widescreen laptops. You can't have it both ways, boy. Quite seriously delusional indeed.

And do some real research, USB was well on its way to replacing serial ports regardless of iMacs, for the sheer fact the difference in speed (12 MB/s compared to 115 kb/sec) and connectivity.

"Water cooling Chips - no one said Apple invented or popularized it, just you and you provide no back up to claim their reasons for using it other than the obvious - cooling the CPU - no point just your opinion"

You claim no one said Apple invented or popularized it, yet you challenged the notion that Apple followed suit in this area (which is a fact). I put you in your place concerning this, don't know why you brought it back up.

"Ad Ban "The ban was held because the "claims" by Apple inferred the server market as well" - wrong as usual (do you ever speak in truth?)
The ban was because of the claim of "World's fastest personal computer" No server is mentioned whatsoever.
"

Wrong as usual? You really are showing yourself to be a delusional, ignorant zealot.

...In a statement Thursday, NAD also said it took issue with Apple's claim regarding the computer's 64-bit processor. The "advertiser's claim, 'the world's first 64-bit processor for personal computers,' COULD REASONABLY BE INTERPRETED TO APPLY TO WORKSTATIONS, in the context in which it was presented." This claim was unsupported by evidence, according to NAD. "....
http://news.com.com/2100-1042_3-5180251.html

""They did their own benchmarks with fuzzy numbers" that's funny I could have sworn it was done by an independent firm - oh wait it was. - see this for more: http://news.com.com/Apple+TV+ad+banned+in+U.K./2100-1042_3-5105661.html"

That's funny, when Popular Mechanics tried running the same tests with Veritest's configuration file, they couldn't...turns out the Veritest configuration was ONLY for the prototype G5 sent to them.

....When we attempted to run the same tests, serious problems developed. Everything ran fine on the HP, and it scored well in the tests: 27.8 for the SPECint_rate 2000 and 16.3 for the SPECfp_rate 2000, which handily beat Apple's published benchmarks.....

...Even though VeriTest published the configuration file it used for the tests, we could never make it work because it was designed for a previous version of Mac OS X (10.2) and we were running 10.3. Also, VeriTest ran tests on "prototype" equipment from Apple. The published configuration file would not work on a retail Apple G5 box....

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/computers/1279211.html?page=2&c=y

The SPEC benchmark caused so much controversy I'm surprised you even tried to point it as a defense for Apple's obvious fudging. I noticed you completely ignored other CPU tests, like Cinebench (choose any Mac vs PC benchmark site), that does not use any sort of optimized compiler that clearly shows which CPU is faster at crunching numbers.

Of course, old habits are hard to change....and Apple continues to create controversy with its benchmarks....this time stooping to a new low using TWO DIFFERENT applications for the "same" benchmark:
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/article/1796/

.....Apparently Apple conveniently ignores the very basic principle of benchmarking; you should be comparing apples to apples, or at least make an effort to do so. This not only invalidates their scores but it makes Apple look particularly amateurish; clearly they don’t know the first thing about fair benchmarking, or simply went out of their way to have the new PowerPC come out on top. Fortunately they’re upfront and honest about their intentions as their opening statement reads: Your unfair advantages start with the PowerPC G5. And that’s exactly right; PCs usually get benchmarked on a level playing field, PowerPCs seem to need quite a bit of doctoring to make them come out on top, so much for a fair comparison.....

Jun 01, 05 - 08:49 pm Comment from: MacJack

The award was for best product of 2005, so Tiger was probably up against several Linux releases but not Windows. Anyhoo, with Longhorn being stripped down at the rate it is (and looking like a slightly glossier version of XP), even if it had have been released, Tiger should still have won.

Jun 01, 05 - 08:52 pm Comment from: MacJack

One more thing ...!

The sad fact is that most of the world doesn't know the Mac still exists, and those who do are under the misapprehension that Windows has "caught up". The release of Longhorn, even if it doesn't measure up to Tiger/Cougar/whatever, will only reinforce this belief.

Apple better get out there and tout the Mac's advantages before Longhorn hits.

Jun 01, 05 - 09:04 pm Comment from: Andrew

Mac Jack:
You are totally right. They have an amazing opportinity right now to properly promote it and sell it based on it's exciting merits.
It doesn't appear they will, but maybe they'll surprise us yet.
And while Longhon is currently"stripped=down", as you put it. I think there may be growing pressure, (due to Apple;s increased interest), to put some of these items that have been removed "back in", by developers and PC manufacturers. I hope they do.

Yeah, right.

FMP is HYBRID. Completely. Ever since version 4 (1998 or thereabouts). Claiming it as a Mac product is overstretching it.

(For the hardcore zealots: the very first version of FileMaker was called Nutshell. It was DOS ONLY. So don't come with 'Apple was first' nonsense.)

It pleases me, I am also completely hybrid, that FMP did beat all the others out there, though. That FMP wins on the Mac platform is a given. There is no other Mac compatible desktop database out there... (nothing that comes close anyway).

For an angry, bitter PC troll to stick around and cause trouble because he can only find joy in other people's suffering is another.

But for a Mac-hater to stick around a Mac-centric website, constantly providing an inflammatory "alternative view", and then to COMPLAIN THAT HIS VIEW IS NOT ACCEPTED BY THE MAJORITY OF READERS?? Well, that's just... just... Fsck it, words fail me.

(Heh. MDNMW is "love". Not much of that in this thread.)

Microsoft did not submit their OS for World Class Awards because:

1. MS OS is pathetic, by any reasonable definition.
2. MS OS is too insecure.
3. MS OS lacks any significantly innovative features.
4. MS OS is too unstable.
5. MS is jus' plain embarrassed.
