PC World names Biggest Tech Disappointment of 2007: Microsoft’s Windows Vista
Monday, December 17, 2007 - 09:15 AM EST

PC World takes a look at fifteen of 2007's much-ballyhooed products, sites, and services that, it turned out, left much to be desired.

#1. No Wow, No How: Windows Vista: "Five years in the making and this is the best Microsoft could do?" Dan Tynan asks to PC World.

"Vista isn't all that good. Many of the innovations the operating system was supposed to bring--like more efficient file and communications systems--got tossed overboard as Microsoft struggled to get the OS out the door, some three years after it was first promised. Despite its hefty hardware requirements, Vista is slower than XP," Tynan writes.

"We have no doubt Vista will come to dominate the PC landscape, if only because it will become increasingly hard to buy a new machine that doesn't have it pre-installed. And that's disappointing in its own right," Tynan writes.

PC World is also disappointed with AT&T's broadband service for Apple iPhone (EDGE), Microsoft Office 2007's interface changes, Apple Mac OS X Leopard for minor problems upon release, and Microsoft's Zune 2.0: "We're not the only ones disappointed in the Zune. According to the NPD Group, Microsoft still lags behind Sandisk and Creative Labs in market share for portable media players. And for every Zune Microsoft sells, Apple sells 30 iPods. Remember: You can't kill an iPod if you can't get close to it."

It's too bad there are aren't other, better choices. /sarcasm

Dec 17, 07 - 09:20 am Comment from: Curley

I believe you will always be able to buy a mac without vista pre-installed.

Dec 17, 07 - 09:22 am Comment from: almux

Oh Gosh!
Even PC folks can't swallow it anymore!

Dec 17, 07 - 09:24 am Comment from: HotinPlaya

This may be true. but they are getting good reviews from people up grading from Vista to windows XP

Conclusion

To be honest there is only one conclusion to be made; Microsoft has really outdone themselves in delivering a brand new operating system that really excels in all the areas where Vista was sub-optimal. From my testing, discussions with friends and colleagues, and a review of the material out there on the web there seems to be no doubt whatsoever that that upgrade to XP is well worth the money. Microsoft can really pat themselves on the back for a job well done, delivering an operating system which is much faster and far more reliable than its predecessor. Anyone who thinks there are problems in the Microsoft Windows team need only point to this fantastic release and scoff loudly.

Well done Microsoft!

...never heard of it....

Dec 17, 07 - 09:27 am Comment from: jarrettdailynews

I don't see what the disappointment is, it's a microsoft product. The only people that understand it's horridity ( yes I made that up ) are people who use computers, and people who use Mac's. People buying PC's to access that NET have no idea what a pile of shit Vista is, and XP for that matter too. Hell, my old man had me convinced at one point that Window's 3.1 was a fantastic OS. Then I went to compUSA and used a Mac. Good thing my old man was a couple of years behind that curve other wise I would have been using Windows 95 and thought like 90% of the world that it was great, and that it was actually something that microsoft had come up with on their own.

The only thing that is going to dominate that markets is OS X on Mac's and all of the variants on other devices.

Dec 17, 07 - 09:36 am Comment from: Ampar

Yeah, but Windows 7 with Service Pack 2 in 2016 won't suck nearly as much. THIS time they're serious.

Dec 17, 07 - 09:40 am Comment from: ldm

Credibility is reduced with the inclusion of iPhone and Leopard on the list!!

Dec 17, 07 - 09:41 am Comment from: Pooloo

If you want to gloat over that list, Leopard isn't that far behind at #8. In fact, Apple and Microsoft are the only companies with more than 1 product on the list; Microsoft with 3, Zune, Office 2007, and Vista and Apple with two, iPhone (although, it's not much of a real disappointment in the description), and Leopard.

Dec 17, 07 - 09:42 am Comment from: ron

"Microsoft struggled to get the OS out the door, some three years after it was first promised."

I believe it was 5 years. So the analysts are cutting MS a lot of slack. Oh! Oh! That's what MS is: 'Slack'.

Dec 17, 07 - 09:45 am Comment from: shen

i am afraid they lose a bit of credibility when they list what everyone else says is the best product of the year in their worst. why is the iPhone on the list?

what ever.....

Dec 17, 07 - 09:45 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

I name PCWorld headline: Biggest Understatement of the Year.

Dec 17, 07 - 10:05 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

Et tu, PC World? It appears the Apple astroturfers & Cupertino's FUD machine got to you too. Sickening.

Magnificent Microsoft Windows Vista is still shaking things up in the computing world with it's fantastic looking and blazing fast Aero interface. The "Wow" is most definitely now. Maybe you MAC sheep will get a taste of Microsoft's innovations when Apple copies it in the next OS X Pussy release. PC World's comments regarding Zune 2.0 are going to look pretty stupid next holiday season when Zune finally overtakes the "me too" I-POD in market share. The new Zunes look great. I'm gonna get one. It gives the tired and stale I-POD a run for its money.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Dec 17, 07 - 10:12 am Comment from: therepguy

WOW

Now that a good example of what can be said is "THE KISS OF DEALTH" for M$'s Vista...

And what about all of those new computer owners who having to pay to degrade there boxes back to XP... someone should take M$ to court for this mess called Vista!

And to think those folks could have bought a new Mac and had chose... MAC or Windows and most would have never gotten past MAC once they had turned on there Mac!

Well I guess that means stupidity is still alive and well in some parts of America... sad but true!

Dec 17, 07 - 10:14 am Comment from: therepguy

Someone wrote...

"This may be true. but they are getting good reviews from people up grading from Vista to windows XP"

Hell that's not a upgrade... it'd a downgrade!

Dec 17, 07 - 10:25 am Comment from: Pete

Vista was rushed out the door to stop the assault of Mac OS X, plain and simple. Microsoft was scared of the new Apple under Steve Jobs.

The fact that Vista was dragged out for years before release shows the "just wait to see what we got" anticipation was utilized for maximum benefit.

Vista didn't have to be better than Mac OS X, just not tired looking as XP would be next to OS X.

Microsoft diverted a potentially large defection to Apple and that's all that was needed. After all there is only so much improvement one can do to a operating system and the GUI before it gets silly, just look at Leopard's "stacks" and stupid 3D dock, it's hideous. Now Safari asks you before it quits to save tabs/web pages? How stupid, thats what a History is for.

Microsoft improved the security and the general looks of Windows, unfortunatly they planned on hardware improving enough to be able to run Vista fast, but like everyone else they are struggling to make best use of a multi-core processors, which is difficult to code for. Apple was smart to keep their OS slim.

I suspect the next version of Windows will significanlty improve on Vista but of course always remain slightly behind Mac OS. "Just good enough not to buy into a hardware lock" as the catch phrase is.

In fact Mac OS XI (that's 11, next comes OS XII and OS XIII and OS XIV and so on) supposed to have animated 3D dock icons when one mouses over them.

Silly. So are glossy screens, just silly.

Leopard's minor problems? They seem to be VERY minor compared to what my Winblows sufferer friends have been dealing with in Shitsa since its release.

As an early adopter, I had very few problems at all - some cursor wonkiness, a Firefox crash, and an iTunes crash. That's it! Not a kernel panic to be seen anywhere! No reboots to fix a frozen system.

Can Shitsa early adopters say that?

Dec 17, 07 - 10:38 am Comment from: Cubert

Ahhhhhh, Zune Tang. I love your use of the makeup company - MAC and not Mac. That is classic troll-baiting for Mac fanatics! Keep up the good work educating the trolls on how it is really done!

Dec 17, 07 - 10:39 am Comment from: Cubert

I should have said "real trolls".

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,140283/article.html

A great quote that shows how brainwashed some people are and how far behind the times Madia$oft really is.

"I like the junk filtering in Windows Mail (Vista's upgraded version of Outlook Express); and I appreciate the way I can easily drag User folders (formerly My Documents) to a new location"

Filtering? In mail since Panther, at least. He is happy to be able to move a freakin' folder?!?!?!

What a joke!

ZuneTang, I can't help giving a "troll" the treat they seek, an acknowleding response.
Your nose is so brown! You must like the smell of Bill Gates butt in the morning when you kiss it.

Thanks for the laughs.

I have a problem with the article including Leopard and iPhone. The article totally lost my attention after that.

It had to be Microsoft's requirement, in order to make Vista appear not to be such a loser.

Dec 17, 07 - 11:06 am Comment from: Macaday

Since when did Micorsoft EVER improve on anything?

Disappointed? No. More like 'expected'.

Dec 17, 07 - 11:23 am Comment from: Dave Smith

Zune TAng gets a hefty salary from Microsoft obviously...

Dec 17, 07 - 11:26 am Comment from: Jubei

MS new Vista tag. "Vista, the Wow WTF" starts now.

Dec 17, 07 - 11:45 am Comment from: Jubei

The saddest part of all is that eventually Vista will be the #1 OS in the world. Specially in the US. No matter how crappy the software is, it will be in 95% of the computers in the US. Isn't it nice to have a monopoly?

Dec 17, 07 - 11:50 am Comment from: monkeyandy

I am a long term Mac user, but I have to say Leopard has been nothing but problems for me on all of my Macs. Losing wireless connections, programs crashing randomly & having to reboot 3-4 times a day because of various glitches and apps hanging. It is verging on almost being as bad as Vista. Come on Apple, sort out the Leopard problems ASAP! If you don't believe me look at how many others are suffering the same problems on Apples Leopard discussion site...I am not the only one! I regret upgrading and wished I had stuck with Leopard for a few more months. A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!

Dec 17, 07 - 11:55 am Comment from: Realist

I find Vista elegant, intuitive, and a step WAY above Leopard. Not surprising the iphone is on the list. My Nokia does everythig it does but much better. GPS? Got it. Music? Got it. Real Keyboard? Got it.

Any questions?

Dec 17, 07 - 11:58 am Comment from: Cubert

monkeyandy,
Sorry about your problems. None here (see post at 10:33 above). I would say you are unlucky and in the minority.

Dec 17, 07 - 12:16 pm Comment from: Tommyr

Talk about a no brainer! It HAS to be the top choice for crap of the year!

Dec 17, 07 - 12:18 pm Comment from: Hmm

Just 2007?

Dec 17, 07 - 02:23 pm Comment from: Macjammer

I am running Leopard on all but one of my Macs, my dual G4 450 Graphite seems not up to the task, and I have not had major problems and as a tip to my fellow Mac users, clean install each time you upgrade your OS.

With that backup all important files that you have beforehand. As long as you have the original applications don't worry about backing those up as you should just re-install off the software cd/dvd.

Most problems have been issues with installing over an older OS and somewhere on your hard drive is an older app that the newer OS doesn't like, causing hiccups.

Dec 17, 07 - 02:56 pm Comment from: Gman

iPhone placed #5.

And spelling and grammar have apparently hit new lows as well.

Dec 17, 07 - 05:00 pm Comment from: silver surfer

I have to agree with monkeyandy, look at the threads on Apple's support page. apps hanging, "Stacks" suck, just yesterday iMovie wouldn't open. iTunes wouldn't close. Apple GET this fixed asap! Tiger was a breeze from the beginning, and anyone who says different is a fool. I read a post on MDN the other day about how Tiger was just as bad from the start. I doubt that very much. I am a long time Mac user as well but Apple let me down this time.

Dec 17, 07 - 05:59 pm Comment from: Jooop

I tried to copy-and-replace 60 files totaling 1MB (each one is just a few kilobytes) from my Vista machine's hard drive to a network share today (over the LAN) and it took 10 minutes. The same operation takes about 30 seconds from my XP machine but is dog slow from both of my Vista machines. This is a huge, well-known problem that affects everyone running Vista, Microsoft is aware of it, and has done nothing to fix it in more than a year. That's just pathetic and unacceptable.

Dec 17, 07 - 06:13 pm Comment from: get real Zune Idiot

If a real peecee person voiced real opinions and rebuttal to the Mac community here at MDN they would be wholeheartedly accepted. However, the childish, innate, assanine baiting that zune tang offers is pure tripe. Nothing you have to say you idiot is worth breathing. Go away and rot in the cesspool you slithered out of. YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dec 17, 07 - 07:10 pm Comment from: Easy on Zane Tung

I can't believe you easy it is to get some of us Mac users hot and bothered. Everyone, ZANE TUNG is a FARCE! He gets off on people reacting to his posts. He's one of the most hilarious people here! It doesn't even mater if he's serious, if he is, that makes him EVEN MORE of a laughing stock. Next time you read his post, just have a good laugh and move on. Don't give him the attention that he wants.

Dec 17, 07 - 08:23 pm Comment from: LorD1776

I tried twice to do an Archive and Install with Leopard and got all the way to the desktop and the installer would hang. I had previously done an A & I with Tiger over Panther on this iBook. Doing a clean install worked perfectly, but I put my Super Duper clone of Tiger back on for now. This past weekend I dumped over 20 third party apps I had installed over the last 3 1/2 years. I had barely used any of them. That could have been the problem. Anyway, I'll probably try the A & I again over the holidays just to see if I can. Then a clean install for a fresh start.

Dec 17, 07 - 08:34 pm Comment from: Road Warrior

Ah, Zune Thang, I guess Vista won't be getting into a museum after all, maybe the house of broken dreams.

Nice Et tu, to PC World? Actually MS is the FUD machine, and it looks like PC World is escaping it. Your confusion is understandable.

Whatever the next OS X Pussy release contains, I am sure it will be more appetizing than the limp dick minimesoftie's Vienna sausage.

Thanks for the latest "just you wait" comment. Another one for the archives, tossed into the Apple death knells pile. Along with the next Zune. Of course you went on how the first Zune was going to overtake the iPod. Well of course from those comments one can could basically call you down and out....

a liar.

Your lies Zune Thang. Our won't get fooled by you.™

I loved this comment:

"And when the fastest Vista notebook PC World has ever tested is an Apple MacBook Pro, there's something deeply wrong with the universe."

Dec 18, 07 - 06:11 am Comment from: Reality

"for every Zune Microsoft sells, Apple sells 30 iPods. Remember: You can't kill an iPod if you can't get close to it."

The same can be said for copies of Leopard and copies of Vista.

Dec 18, 07 - 06:13 am Comment from: Shepard Steve

"I believe you will always be able to buy a mac without vista pre-installed."

That's true, but it won't be the way most are sold a couple of years from now.

Dec 18, 07 - 06:45 am Comment from: Fred

Ouch, both Vista and OS X share similar PC World infamy. Read further, OS 10.5.1 also has the distinction of being labeled one of 2007 worst products. I reckon that waiting for 10.5.2 or 10.5.3 is the best thing to do.
