PC World’s Coursey: Is Office 2010 really the best Microsoft can do?
Monday, July 13, 2009 - 04:58 PM EST

Samsung Deals"From what's been reported so far, I don't see much to like about Office 2010. The discussion thus far has lacked a single "killer feature" that makes me want to plunk down a few hundred dollars for an Office that seems only a teensy bit better than what I am already using," David Coursey writes for PC World.

"In fact, the real 'killer' aspect of the announcement may be what a free online version of Office does to the chance of consumers and very small businesses ever paying for Office again," Coursey writes. "Microsoft can blame that on the Googleopoly, right?"

Coursey writes, "OK, it won’t be that bad and Microsoft will doubtless leave so much out of an online Office that most business users will stay away simply because it doesn't do what they need done. But, it's a sad day when a new version of Office can't generate more excitement than this one has been able to."

"Office 2010 is being shown today at Microsoft's Partner Conference shindig down in New Orleans," Coursey writes. "I know there is some disaster symbolism at work here, but why besmirch the name of a perfectly horrible hurricane?"

Great another version of PC MS Office that will frustrate me more than the 2007 PC version and make me less productive.

Jul 13, 09 - 04:16 pm Comment from: macman

And, of course, MS will make all the 2010 file formats incompatible with older versions. That is how they force everyone to upgrade.

Yes, it is, does that surprise you?

Microsoft free, me.

@ macman - But but but... I thought the whole reason they rigged the ISO voting was to get their "Open" Office XML format to be an open, interoperable standard?

...oh, right, there's all those undefined binary object areas which will allow them to "innovate" their way out of true interoperability, and keep their vassals dependent on their buggy software. Gotta love it when they can *still* get away with that same old scam after all these years.

It's a pity that Apple clearly has some faustian pact with Microsoft regarding Office document formats - if Apple would throw their weight behind OpenDocument, Microsoft would finally be feeling some serious hurt, instead of getting away with this kind of BS.

Oh, and that last line bears repeating:

"I know there is some disaster symbolism at work here, but why besmirch the name of a perfectly horrible hurricane?"

...and if you remember how some of the government-run hurricane relief websites were IE-only... well, there was plenty of besmirching going on as a result of that, wasn't there?

Microsoft has never been in the business of "doing the best they can do". Why would they start now?

Jul 13, 09 - 05:36 pm Comment from: Bizlaw

What "killer feature" could Microsoft possibly add to Office absent an entire new application? Word and Excel do pretty much anything you could ask of word processing and spreadsheet apps, PowerPoint isn't any Keynote but it contains tons of features, and anything else really isn't used much.

Absent teleportation, I think Office has really gained all of the "killer features" you can cram into an Office suite and still have the features be usable (usable in a Microsoftian sense, that is).

Can't truly blame MS on that one – there's just not much more you can do with it (since MS isn't going to improve the interface or reliability).

When;s the last time they actually got a good... alright, even an adequate review? Perhaps that should be revue, its all getting a little Bordeville.

And we still are left dealing with Outlook, which uses the Word HTML rendering engine (of all things!!). Say what you will about IE, it still renders HTML a billion times better than Word. MS is a bain.

@ Bizlaw

I was about to make similar observations. I mean, really, how much more exciting can a word processor get these days?

Here's an exciting idea... strip out some features and code so the suite is leaner and faster.... then start all over again!

Jul 13, 09 - 05:58 pm Comment from: Not Bill

Need a feature to force you to buy the new Offic suite. How about lack of backward compatibility? Sooner of later there will be enough new computers out there with the new program that this will begin to be a problem for those "left behind" with a perfiectly good set of programs. MS is not stupid; just evil.

Coursey doesn't get it. Each Microsoft Office release is like a 6-pack of Busch Light, Krokus CD and 1978 Penthouse rolled into one exciting package, and Access is like your parents being out of the house so you can crank that Krokus CD on dad's stereo. I love Microsoft Office. The only killer feature left would be a free version. That would be AWESOME!

Do they still make Microsoft Works for MAC? I bet Coursey would get a charge out of that.

Your potential. Our passion.™

Other than having a pretty face nothing here move on. Still it is a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation program; nothing more. When MS changed the file formats from doc xls etc. to docx and xlsx they lost many folks and screwed with corporate file sharing.

What I want to do is open the program then type. Each new version has a revamped GUI supposed to ease its use but, is far from it. Much like buying a new car to find the brakes have been moved. To be productive folks use mnemonics however, MS Office new GUI has lowered productivity. With each new version folks have to learn a new GUI so tell me how productive can they be?

Never as exiting as the day Microsoft rolled out Office for Mac.

Office for Mac has sucked from the get-go.

Most of us hardly need it. Trash is meant to be thrown out.

MS Office-free since 2006.

Anyone check out http://www.office2010themovie.com yet?
Quite entertaining. I won't be buying any software because of it though.

ACTUALLY, don't go to the above mentioned site. You'll flame me for even suggesting looking at a Silverlight powered website. Just view the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUawhjxLS2I

I don't know if this is true, but a rumor I heard from a very reliable source is that if you want office 2010 you will have to, have to run it on vista of 7, they are forcing people out of xp, by writing in code that it won't work on xp, thus making pc'rs switch--wether they like it or not...boy do I love my mac!

Jul 14, 09 - 07:56 am Comment from: theloniousMac

The only killer feature is to lower the price to under $100, period, no special versions.

Jul 14, 09 - 08:47 am Comment from: @Dave

Don't gloat. Apple's been doing this for years with its apps and OSes, and is about to do it again with Snow Leopard.

Jul 14, 09 - 01:35 pm Comment from: DreamTheEndless

@ @Dave -

Oh come on now. Apple lets you get in at least 3 or 4 generations before you lose compatibility. Depending on what you think of Vista/Win 7 (RE: Win 7 is really Vista SP1) this is only one or two generations before they intentionally take away compatibility in order to force you to upgrade.
