Photo of Apple’s rumored subnotebook Mac?
Wednesday, January 02, 2008 - 06:18 PM EST

An image was recently posted to MacRumors' forums by a "macrumors newbie" named "greenrabbit."

Is this the first pre-Macworld Expo leaked image of Apple's rumored ultra-thin subportable, complete with a nice wide trackpad loaded with multi-touch goodness? For some, that giant wide single button might raise the red flag of fake; it just doesn't seem to make Apple-sense design-wise to us. It's "non-Ivesian," if you will — unless it has new uses previously unseen (for example, perhaps the left and right sides rock on a central pivot, so the button can have multiple uses. We call dibs on that idea, Apple, but it's available for purchase). All that naysaying said, now watch them release it just like that on the 15th.

It's that time of the year. So, real or fake, what do you think?

MacDailyNews Take: Perhaps "greenrabbit" should have named him or herself "whiterabbit," instead.

If this is fake it's one of the more plausible ones I've seen

If it's real then let the drooling begin.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:24 pm Comment from: Big Al

There's a floppy on his desk. This guy really is ahead of the curve.

I believe!

Jan 02, 08 - 06:26 pm Comment from: believer

big al, what floppy? that's business card or something

Jan 02, 08 - 06:27 pm Comment from: ChrisM

If thats it, I think its rather boring.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:27 pm Comment from: Frenchie

Subnotebook mac, like subprimes ?

Jan 02, 08 - 06:30 pm Comment from: HotinPlaya

look at the width of the touch pad??

Jan 02, 08 - 06:30 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

I was going to say fake, but with the recent leaks lately, who knows?

Jan 02, 08 - 06:30 pm Comment from: DJ

Boring I want it in black or gunmetal.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:34 pm Comment from: Turbine

I don't buy it, simply because there's nothing in the new model that couldn't be taken from an existing model and used in photoshop to create this fake photo.

It's just hard for me to believe that Apple would have been working for so long on something that so closely resembles old products that have been around for years now.

A wider trackpad is hardly a revolutionary feature...

Jan 02, 08 - 06:35 pm Comment from: maclover

Ergonomically the wide button does make sense. It enables you to easily click no matter where your hand is on the trackpad.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:36 pm Comment from: the fact this is here means it is fake

Apple planted this one

Jan 02, 08 - 06:36 pm Comment from: Non Sequitur

Anything located under a notebook would be, of course, subnotebook. In that case, I already have a subnotebook desk!

Jan 02, 08 - 06:37 pm Comment from: Oops

If this is real, wouldn't this have to be sitting on someone's desk at Apple? It would be pretty easy to track down the culprit I would think. I doubt there are very many floating around and they're going to be keeping a really close watch on those that are.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:37 pm Comment from: Reclaimer

I'll buy that for a dollar!

Jan 02, 08 - 06:38 pm Comment from: Peter

Why in the world do sites fall for this each time. If that was real, there would be 100 clear and pristine photos of it. For heaven's sake, we even take 20 pictures of the boxes.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:38 pm Comment from: iamdj

The shadow on the "sub" looks wrong.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:38 pm Comment from: Maciac

This image is not real. I don't believe for a minute that Apple would design a laptop that would require you to rest your palms on the track pad. That makes no sense. Even if it were programmed to ignore palm touches, it still gets dirty from sweaty palms and works less efficiently.

I'm sure Apple will make the next touch pad multi touch, but it doesn't need to be wide to be effective. The iPhone is a great example of this.

I say fraud. I would hope fraud too, because this doesn't look like much of a step forward for Apple. They are capable of so much better.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:39 pm Comment from: iamdj

The shadow CAST by the sub looks wrong. To be more clear.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:39 pm Comment from: shane blyth

take alot at the vaious shadows.. not just on the sub notebook but the macbookpro they either used lots of different light sources or this photo has been touched badly

Jan 02, 08 - 06:42 pm Comment from: iDon't

I'd rather have a Eee PC.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:44 pm Comment from: Islandgirl

Look at the keyboard. It's just like the current MacBook Pro's, and in fact this looks just like a smaller, thinner MacBook Pro with the wider trackpad/button.
Isn't Apple moving to the keyboard design used in the MacBook and the new aluminum wired and wireless keyboards?
If Apple is introducing an entirely new design, how likely is it the company would make it look just like the older MacBook Pro, which already looks much like its PowerBook predecessor?

Jan 02, 08 - 06:46 pm Comment from: ken1w

I wide trackpad and button makes sense, but not THAT wide. You need to rest your palms on the area taken up by that wide button. I can understand if the trackpad was that wide, because it can be designed to not recognize palm contact (versus finger tip contact), but not the button. I have to say this is not the real thing.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:48 pm Comment from: eMax

So the new laptops are going to have a special gesture based track pad interface while the desktops are left behind, or are required to get some type of add on....I don't buy it.

If Apple is going to greatly enhance/replace the mouse/track pad its going to be across the board with all of their products.

This is fake.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:49 pm Comment from: macman

Fake. Apple will be moving to the new macbook style keyboard for all products, including the macbook pros. The new subnotebook will have the same design as the aluminum desktop keyboard Apple currently offers. The 15" and 17" macbook pros will also be updated to have the new keyboard as well (along with 17" LED backlighting).

Jan 02, 08 - 06:51 pm Comment from: gav

PALM problem when typeing so - not real --- GO BAKE A FAKE!

Jan 02, 08 - 06:53 pm Comment from: macman

Oh, and the new subnotebook will be the first to have the entire palmrest as a trackpad. It will be a very clean design, possibly even sensing the movement thru the an aluminum layer, so the palm rest area is just a clean, solid surface.

And possibly no more mouse button either (maybe a home button on the side of the front though), it will all be virtual thru multi-touch, like the iPhone.

Apple has patented technology to know when your plams are resting when typing to disable the trackpad.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:53 pm Comment from: Too Hot!

I'm not really a photoshop expert, but I've dabbled in it quite a bit. So take what I'm going to say with a grain of salt.

There doesn't seem to be a latch. That's a give-away. The same in a MBP would require the thing to be thicker than it is in this photo, and they couldn't have used the MacBook groove in photoshop without a whole lot of work. They started with a MBP and thinned it, and had to cover the latch holes (badly done). Another clue is the squeezed ports on the side.

However, Apple might have come up with a new mechanism of keeping the thing closed. So there you have it.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:53 pm Comment from: Reclaimer

Still thinks it needs an optical drive.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:53 pm Comment from: welluhm...

maybe it's one that was made just for creating multi touch gestures.
otherwise not that interesting to look at

Jan 02, 08 - 06:55 pm Comment from: Fake

Shadows are all wrong. The light source would be visible if it was producing those shadows.

Jan 02, 08 - 06:56 pm Comment from: ashoka8350

Picture is FAKE. Look at the key board. It is ancient. The style is also ancient. MacBook Nano will be the size of MacBook,MINUS the edges around the key board and screen would have minimal edge like iPhone. This will make this mini note book about an inch or more shorter in width and depth and still maintain 13" screen. Wonder will they would introduce the iPod Nano colors !!

Jan 02, 08 - 06:59 pm Comment from: G Spank

The iPod is the light source! DUH!

Jan 02, 08 - 07:12 pm Comment from: Awesome

Fake... I just have a hunch...

Jan 02, 08 - 07:15 pm Comment from: MeanGuy

Fake, but I think there's a new notebook.....

Jan 02, 08 - 07:25 pm Comment from: Ampar

That pad does look ultra-absorbent.

Jan 02, 08 - 07:26 pm Comment from: Ampar

It looks like a custom mod for Verne Troyer.

Jan 02, 08 - 07:27 pm Comment from: tmsruge

Fake, where the hell are you supposed to put your palms people? What you want me to "hover" over the palm rest? Riiiiight! Good one. Next time please put some thought into the faketastic fakery, mmmkay?

Jan 02, 08 - 07:31 pm Comment from: montex

Blurry photo = fake.

What's with the Ginormous trackpad?

Jan 02, 08 - 07:35 pm Comment from: BiZarRo BaLlmEr

fake, the track pad button is sticking up too high.

Jan 02, 08 - 07:38 pm Comment from: BiZarRo BaLlmEr

Anyways Apple will finally make a clickable track pad.

Jan 02, 08 - 07:48 pm Comment from: suden

Fake...looks like a MacBook Pro photoshopped and I don't believe that Apple would regurgitate this design-it's just not innovative enough.

Jan 02, 08 - 07:50 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

The wide track pad is interesting but. . .

Don't you need a place to put the palms of your hands while typing?
I don't think Apple would overlook something like that.

Jan 02, 08 - 07:54 pm Comment from: ...

I find the extra wide touch pad to be the most interesting.

Jan 02, 08 - 07:55 pm Comment from: Ampar

"Fake, where the hell are you supposed to put your palms people?"

Maybe it's putting the Palm to rest?

wink

Jan 02, 08 - 07:56 pm Comment from: NeverFade

FAKE. Fake. And Fake again.

the screen is touch - not the mouse area!

dumb, du - dumb - dumb- DUMB!

Jan 02, 08 - 07:58 pm Comment from: Totally Bogus...

There's no way Apple's letting its prototypes into people's homes like this. Look at all the other junk on the desk. This was shot in a dorm room and tweaked in Photoshop as a joke.

Nice try, college kids.

Jan 02, 08 - 07:58 pm Comment from: fenman

Visible ports are wrong size in proportion to other visual clues in the remainder of the picture.

Trackpad and button combo does not make sense. Overall dimensions not appropriate to a genuine sub-notebook - too close to MacBook overall and Apple would not self compete like that.

Fake like a typical Hollywood Actress' figure

Jan 02, 08 - 08:10 pm Comment from: ApplePi

Hey Look!

It's a fake. It's a very good fake but a fake. The creator had a little trouble making the keyboard. Notice how high it sits!?? It could be a shadow, but it's not all shadow.

Jan 02, 08 - 08:11 pm Comment from: J

Shadows and perspective are off on the sub. There is blurring on the left side of the keyboard where they have tried to add lighting effects. Ports are also too small.
