Photos of Apple’s $9 million 32-foot-by-32-foot New York City Glass Cube
Sunday, January 01, 2006 - 09:51 PM EST

Gregory Marks has posted photos taken in December of 2005 of Apple's $9 million 32-foot-by-32-foot Glass Cube entranceway to their upcoming subterranean New York City Apple Retail Store within the GM building. The photos show the scale of the cube, but it's sheathed in black covering at the moment.

Photos here.

I don't see 9 mil in these photos. Somebody needs to be more demonstrative here.

Will it be unveiled during MacWorld? That would be sweer.

Jan 02, 06 - 12:30 am Comment from: Size

Wrong building?? Look at the black panels covering the glass. They are more than likely 4' wide by 8' tall which is a standard sheet size. Compared to the worker and the entry door they look that size. That would make the building 24' x 24' (6 panels wide by 4'). What's up?

Apple needs to put a big PA system out there and play Richard Strauss', "Also spracht Zarathustra [eng.: Thus Spake Zarathustra]" before its unveiling. It's the theme to '2001: A Space Odyssey', for you young whipper-snappers.

Covered in black like that, it looks a giant monolith.

[In '2010': In the pod bay, Dave Bowman is trying to convince Dr. Floyd to leave the current position near Jupiter, due to its impending transformation into Europa.]

Dave Bowman: "You see, something's going to happen. You must leave."

Dr. Floyd: "What? What's going to happen?"

Dave Bowman: "Something wonderful."

MaWo, 'former'. As in, "The latter things will be different than the former."

It's the start of the Singularity: cool smirk

apple should get a steve ballmer type character to unveil the new cube. that would be sweet and full of energy. also, they should release an intel cube shaped computer, like the old g4 cube, along with the building. that would be sweet. what a b*thcin computer.

I wish they would have done something more interesting and progressive and Apple-like.... like how about deciding to make a $1 million cube and give $8 million to house NYC homeless? Or give $8 million worth of emacs to NYC schools -- that would be 13,333 emacs. I wonder which "gift" new yorkers would prefer? I wonder which would give Apple more press?

Jan 02, 06 - 05:29 am Comment from: h

NYC homeless WANT to be homeless. You just don't get it.

Jan 02, 06 - 06:20 am Comment from: MacRaven

I agree with "h" -- I'm tired of throwing money at the "hopeless" which is probably 90 percent of them. People who don't want to help themselves. I'm equally tired of people who have more children even though they can't afford the ones they have or just themselves. I'd rather see the cube. It's my stock money, go for it Steve. It's a work of art.

Jan 02, 06 - 07:24 am Comment from: twdldee

They should name it "Jobs Tower"

Jan 02, 06 - 08:28 am Comment from: Suicidal Gingerbread Man

Nice to know Apple never wastes money.

Jan 02, 06 - 08:52 am Comment from: iDon't

Total waste of shareholders money. Steve will mess up Apple a second time. Money should be spent on advertising Macs.

Jan 02, 06 - 08:54 am Comment from: Merry Maid

Who is going to keep that piece of crap clean? And for how much?

Jan 02, 06 - 09:15 am Comment from: cloudwall

So that's what happened to the cube. wink

Actually, if you tune into CBS-TV's morning show you might see this thing on a daily basis, they broadcast from the very same plaza every day. Of course they may have to change the camera angles so as not to Apple free ad space every day.

We will see the unveiling of the iHome on Jan 10...it will be a cube made out of glass and be a fine piece of art for any living room..(also it will usher in all forms of legal digital content for the masses). Steve, after SF keynote, will fly to NY and unveil the giant cube while holding the iHome glass cube in his hand...all pieces of the puzzle connect...universal harmony abounds. Stock price on the way to the moon.

the cube will be a great form of advertising in itself. but yes i think that more advertising is needed, but i could understand why they wouldnt advertise ibooks right before they release new ones too. imacs though, get them on tv more, people are shifting in record numbers to the mac though so where heading down the right path.

Jan 02, 06 - 01:53 pm Comment from: hiproductionsdotcom

Looks pretty cool to me...might be a 'destination must see' when in town. Apple needs to redeem itself from the other cube anyway....This might be the answer.

To "idont":
Your quote: "Steve will mess up Apple a second time."

Hope I was misreading. You are kidding--aren't you? Steve wasn't even employed at Apple the only time it was messed up.

Jan 02, 06 - 08:53 pm Comment from: KenC

Uhm, how are you people, Apple-users?!? Think Differently, okay? Did you ever think, gee, gotta spend some money to make money? And, the more Apple makes the more it can give to charitable causes. While a Cube may not have a direct impact upon sales, remember, this store is underground. You have to have a monumental entrance to attract shoppers.

Jan 03, 06 - 01:03 pm Comment from: zupchuck

With amount of dirt floating around NYC, I wonder how they'll keep this glass cube looking good. Window washing bills should be a sight to behold!

Jan 03, 06 - 05:18 pm Comment from: Ampar

Reminds me of the movie Hellraiser. Look out for Pinhead.
