Pocket-lint reviews Apple’s Time Capsule: Backup made incredibly easy; 9 out of 10
Tuesday, March 11, 2008 - 02:29 PM EST

Apple Online StoreWith Apple's new Time Capsule, users get "Apple's 802.11n Airport Extreme Base Station router in its entirety, including the 3 Ethernet LAN ports, USB socket to attach an external drive or printer and all bundled in a slim line casing that is virtually identical to the Airport Extreme Base Station released last year," Stuart Miles reports for Pocket-lint.

"Adding to that mix is a 500GB or 1TB hard drive encased inside and this allows you to either backup your information via Apple's backup software or use it as a network storage without the need for connecting wires," Miles reports.

"Setup, for those even with very little knowledge of how networks run is incredibly easy although Apple do recommend that if you are backing up your entire hard drive using Time Machine that you do it via a wired connection and overnight (it takes a while)," Miles reports. "Once installed and it's backup made incredibly easy."

"For those not familiar with Time Machine, the software, which runs in the background of Apple's latest Operating System Mac OSX10.5, scans your hard drive every hour for files that have changed. If it has, then it gets updated, allowing you to access previous versions of the file at points in its life, just like a time machine," Miles reports.

Full review, with Time Capsule earning a score of 9 out of a possible 10, here.

Great, but what happens if the hard disk fails

"Great, but what happens if the hard disk fails"

It automatically transfers over to the fail safe.

Step 1: Bend over
Step 2: Kiss your butt goodbye
Step 3: Tell your wife all of your vacation pictures are now gone!
Step 4: Kiss your butt goodbye

Note: Yes, I am speaking from experience. Always keep at least two copies.

It is great! Oh if the hard drive fails you still have your data on your computer's hard drive.....unless both the hard drive in the time capsule and your system's hard drive fail simultaneously. Of course a dual failure is possible I suppose but quite unlikely. If you have a greater need for data backup than this a consumer level backup system like the time capsule is not for you, look to more professional level backup systems.

I am delighted with Time Capsule so far. Have 3 computers backed up wirelessly. As far as disk failure, could happen. People get divorced but it isn't a reason to not get married. The odds of Time Capsule and your computer going TU at the same time is slim.

"Great, but what happens if the hard disk fails"

Then get a backup of your backup, then get a backup of that backup, and then go get a life.

Mar 11, 08 - 02:01 pm Comment from: eMax

If the disk fails, there is little chance your original copy will fail at the same time. you replace the disk and then create a new backup.

its a SATA disk, i am sure you can pull it out and do some disk repair to it if its out of W. if not, then send it to apple they will replace it.

Anybody have problems with Time Capsule not being able to store iTunes files and stream them?

I'm not sure what the problem was here, but I'm kinda curious.

And if you are concerned about double disk failures, likely to happen if power goes out while disk is working, you should have a UPS battery backup supplying power to all sensitive items (like those with hard drives).

Mar 11, 08 - 02:16 pm Comment from: @igads

Bahahahahahahaha. Love it.

Mar 11, 08 - 02:38 pm Comment from: Ashley Grayson

To minimize the risk of dual hard disk failures I recommend everyone have a good working power line protector. (Called surge protector but there are more failure modes than simple surges.) And a UPS. One Time Capsule can usually share a UPS with a modest Mac setup but if your Time Capsule is centrally located in a home or office, get it its own UPS.

If your Mac and Time Capsule are both unsecured against power fluctuations, you can lose both in a single event and it won't be due to the component failure.

@ John,

"Great, but what happens if the hard disk fails"

Back up all of your "I'll get killed in my sleep if I lose these" files on data CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray Discs and keep the copies in a Bank safety deposit box.

Send a redundant copy to the Mormons in Utah so they can store the files for you in their mountain vault along with their doomsday supplies. That way when the Mormons are the last ones on earth they can laugh their asses off looking at your stupid holiday snaps.

@ John

Put a backup copy in the seed vault the Norwegians are running up on Svalbard. It can take a direct nuclear hit and no seed is even as much singed, as well as a meteorite hit and an earthquake, all simultaneously.

It's hard to buy Time Capsule when I already have perfectly good Airport Base Station. Apple really should have allowed disc connections to this as originally stated.

That's funny ! ! Are those latter day slideshows?

"That way when the Mormons are the last ones on earth they can laugh their asses off looking at your stupid holiday snaps."

Yes, and will you be married to that one location, or can you upload your hard drive to different vaults?

Mar 11, 08 - 03:04 pm Comment from: Raymond from DC

Ideally, one doesn't want to co-locate source and backup to minimize the likelihood of both failing. But a lightning strike to one's house, a fire or flood, could take both out. But in such cases, you've got more to worry about than your wife's photos or your music collection.

Mar 11, 08 - 03:07 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

"what happens if the hard disk fails?"

The odds of your back up AND your original drive failing at the same time (barring a fire or earthquake) are rather small.

No different than any other back-up system done in the same house.

"Are those latter day slideshows?"

Thanks Ampar. You just made me blow egg salad sandwich through my nose. Obviously you must know something or someone "in the church".

Mar 11, 08 - 03:31 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Like my ex-wife always said
-The Mormon, the marry-er......

Mar 11, 08 - 03:34 pm Comment from: ron

I have two backups. One - Time Capsule (1TB), for Time Machine. The other a 500 GB Lacie which uses SuperDuper to backup every night. I lost time money and data one time. That was enough warning for me. Seems expensive but it isn't.

"You just made me blow egg salad sandwich through my nose."

IT'S A MIRACLE ! ! Now you're going to need to be debriefed by a clergyman. Wait. Let me rephrase that.

Mar 11, 08 - 03:56 pm Comment from: TowerTone

.....or was it"'The more men, the merrier"?
It's all making sense now.

Those weren't really Mormon riding those bikes.
(Not that they shouldn't be allowed to ride Harleys......)

Mar 11, 08 - 07:50 pm Comment from: loyal apple customer

Better question. When can I take my shiny airport extreme base station, plug in an external USB drive and use it for this purpose?

Why do I need another base station (time capsule) just to have this feature?

Mar 11, 08 - 09:30 pm Comment from: grok

Dang, Ampar, that goes back. Sister Innunciata thought it was a miracle...

Mar 12, 08 - 05:16 am Comment from: MacSheikh

@ What TowerTone said...

Can TM store and stream music and movies to multiple Macs? Anyone? Much appreciated.
