Popular Science: ‘Apple’s tiny and affordable Mac mini does it all’
Friday, May 20, 2005 - 09:08 AM EST

"The most amazing thing about Apple’s new Mac mini isn’t its diminutive size, although you can’t help but be surprised at how small it is when you see it in person (about the size of a stack of five CDs). Nor is it the price, although it is the first Mac to break the $500 barrier (provided you supply your own display, keyboard and mouse). The most amazing thing is how an entry-level computer aimed at grandparents and switchers (PC users migrating to the Mac) has ignited the geek community into thinking outside the 6.5-square-inch box. Within hours of the mini’s announcement—weeks before it started shipping—the Web was abuzz with riffs on all the things one could do with such a small and cheap Mac, and mini-dedicated Web sites such as 123macmini.com and modmini.com began popping up soon thereafter," Mike Haney reports for Popular Science.

"One of the most popular ideas to emerge was using it as a living-room computer for recording TV and storing and playing back movies, music and photos. It even inspired an ad hoc group of programmers to begin working feverishly on a Mac equivalent to the Media Center Edition of Windows XP. Called CenterStage, the customizable, open-source app will provide a 10-foot interface to navigate your media with a remote control. (Follow the group’s progress at centerstageproject.com.) Meanwhile, car tuners noticed that the mini fit nicely in a glove box, kicking off a flurry of sleek 'car-puter' installations," Haney reports.

In the full article, you’ll find details on what you need for these two projects and a couple others, as well as instructions for cracking open the Mini for home upgrades here.

YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

May 20, 05 - 09:28 am Comment from: Sputnik

Get a grip people.

Popular science is hardly a credible review website. What's next, Seasame Street Magazine gives the mini two thumbs up? Gene Siskel gives it two thumbs up?

You Apple apologists are scraping the bottom of the bucket for anything positive.

Meanwhile, the real IT world knows and understands the coming revolution that .Net will bring to both real and e-commerce.

By the time the Microsoft bus has blindsided you apologists, you'll be left in the dust.

Love the opening graphic. It's gotta cheese off all the "Media Center" PC builders. How can this little plain box do all those different things? Where are the seven thousand buttons, stickers, tiny plastic doors, ports and assorted geegaws?

Sputnik, the communist era is over, your propaganda can kiss mah arse!

Hey Sput! If you might try watching Sesame Street. If you do, you could learn how to spell it.
ba-dump-kishhhh

LOL

And try and freshen up the schtick a bit. Faux trolls have a duty to their hosts to keep things interesting.

What I would like to know is if the ones here that praise the mini for its versatility are the same ones that say that they want their cell phone to make calls and nothing else. The same as the ones that want their iPods to play music and not include one additional feature. The ones that refuse to believe that a product could possibly do more than one thing well. Either there's some hypocrisy going around or there are two very different crowds.

"Beefing up the Mini’s paltry 256 megabytes of RAM, however, is an ideal DIY job. It’s easy, it doesn’t void the warranty"

oh really?

OT

Episode III was a little disappointing. Anybody else see it yet? The effects were cool, but the plot was light. Oh well. Lucas let us down. Made it too "Disney" so everybody else could join in, not just the hard-core sci-fi fans.

OK - I have finally decided that Sputnik is purely satirical in his posts. He is actually a Mac purist devils advocate. (just keepin' us on our toes).

My Point in Fact: Gene Siskel is dead. 'nuff said.

MW - perhaps - "perhaps I'm right"

May 20, 05 - 11:33 am Comment from: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Longhorn

I saw Episode III last night and I feel like I wasted money on a movie I probably wouldn't even bootleg...

That image is pretty funny except for the fast that it's using an IE icon in the little search field...

That is because mp3 players and phones are tools/devices which are designed for a single purpose and adding features usually distracts from that purpose. General purpose computers by definition are designed to serve multiple purposes. That is whey they have many different types of I/O and run a platform (OS) for various applications to run on.

(sorry any typos, no time to proofread)

Sputnik, the Triumph of trolls. He's so easy to "do" that this is almost certainly Sputnik #4 or #5. His trolling is just silly now, no creativity at all.

May 20, 05 - 12:50 pm Comment from: LordRobin

hmm: Let me get this straight. Because I like my COMPUTER to do more than one thing, I should desire the same of my TOASTER???

May 20, 05 - 01:48 pm Comment from: mike

Yeah it was witty the first 300 times he did it.. now I just read it as pure sarcasm, not even remotely clever.

PopSci not a great mag? Okay. Haha. Sure. Yay. Good Job Splooge-nik

May 20, 05 - 01:58 pm Comment from: S. Temple.

One has to wonder at the mentality of a person who spends time reading a site named "MAC daily news" if they don't like Macs, and prefer PCs!
Come on! Use your brain (Sputnik and your ilk)! Why don't you run along and read "PC daily news" type sites.
If other people want to have a MAC news site, what concern is that to you?
Why do you feel you need to keep checking the Mac site, and commenting on it?
Of course, you're ALLOWED to comment, but I wonder why you bother!

Yes. The revolution of .Net. A world of windows patchers talking on msn IM. sounds great.

In 10 years or so micro$hite will be dead. They can't make a decent product and soon the world will realise.
