President Bush bans sale of iPods to North Korea

“The Bush administration wants North Korea’s attention, so like a scolding parent it’s trying to make it tougher for that country’s eccentric leader to buy iPods, plasma televisions and Segway electric scooters,” Ted Bridis reports for The Associated Press.

MacDailyNews Note: “So like a scolding parent?” Just report the news, Ted. We don’t want or need your personal spin on it.

Bridis continues, “The U.S. government’s first-ever effort to use trade sanctions to personally aggravate a foreign president expressly targets items believed to be favored by Kim Jong Il or presented by him as gifts to the roughly 600 loyalist families who run the communist government.”

“The list of proposed luxury sanctions, obtained by The Associated Press, aims to make Kim’s swanky life harder: No more cognac, Rolex watches, cigarettes, artwork, expensive cars, Harley Davidson motorcycles or even personal watercraft, such as Jet Skis,” Bridis reports.

“Experts said the effort – being coordinated under the United Nations – would be the first ever to curtail a specific category of goods not associated with military buildups or weapons designs, especially one so tailored to annoy a foreign leader. U.S. officials acknowledge that enforcing the ban on black-market trading would be difficult,” Bridis reports.

Bridis reports, “‘It’s a new concept; it’s kind of creative,’ said William Reinsch, a former senior Commerce Department official who oversaw trade restrictions with North Korea during Bill Clinton’s presidency. Reinsch predicted governments will comply with the new sanctions, but agreed that efforts to block all underground shipments will be frustrated… ‘If you take away one of the tools of his control, perhaps you weaken the cohesion of his leadership,’ said Robert J. Einhorn, a former senior State Department official who visited North Korea with Albright and dined extravagantly there. ‘It can’t hurt, but whether it works, we don’t know.'”

  1. This man allows himself all the luxuries in the world, and affords “his people” nothing.

I think an iPod or two less wont hurt. Maybe he should start feeding the starving people that are forced to live on North Korea’s lands.

But that would be the smart thing to do. It seems that Kim does not have too much in the way of “smarts” lately.

And PS…going to war with North Korea is NOT a viable solution. Somebody try and convince that President of yours. He won’t listen to me.

  2. Just report the news? How many times have I clicked on MDN lead-in, just to find that the person or party didn’t actually say what is in the headline. Not that I mind all that much, and the comments are often witty and entertaining, but you shouldn’t be in line to chatise a writer for attaching his spin.

  3. The great and glorious Dear Leader has no use for electronic toy designed by California imperialists and made by their compliant Chinese running dogs.

The great and glorious Dear Leader uses Zune to hear recordings made in our re-education camps, where he can listen to reactionary enemies of the state confess their crimes, punctuated by their <strike>screams</strike> enthusastic exclamations of love for the regime, under <strike>torture</strike> kind persuasion.

  4. Dear Readers,

MacDailyNews do not purport to be journalists. They clearly denote that it is their OPINION with the words “MacDailyNews Note” and “MacDailyNews Take.”

A reporter for The Associated Press is not supposed to inject his own “take” into articles. This AP article is NOT an opinion or editorial.

Sadly, journalism as a profession has declined to obscenely low standards.

MacDailyNews is correct to criticize Bridis and The AP in this instance.

Further, the “MacDailyNews Takes” are why I visit this site several times per day.

MDN Magic Word: “freedom” (it is magic)

  5. the thing is as a serious news article, smart alec remarks isn’t acceptable. MDN is basically a blog, it doesn’t report the news, it comments on them, so smart alec remarks are fine and even expected.
Frankly, I find most of their comments quite funny/educational. Those smart alec comments are the reason I come to MDN (and one stop shopping).

  6. UKJIM
NK has successfully launched medium range missles capable of hitting Tokyo and capable of carrying a small warhead. The effect of a nuclear strike on the Asian financial center would be catastrophic, not to mention the loss of life. Remember also, the Koreans were brutally treated by Japan in the first half of the 20th century and have waited many years for an adequate apology, so they have a smoldering grudge as well.

  7. welcome to the weekly MDN political flamewar, sponsored by the bajillion ads that i am blocking out on this page.

this one has a bit of everything:

    1. Bush-bashing
    2. MDN‘s conservative agenda
    3. International relations/axis of evil
    4. the liberal media

let’s see if we can work a religious angle in here too …

  8. Hey Journalism Professor,

How is “MacDailyNews Note” and “MacDailyNews Take” telling me its opinion? If anything MDN is misleading. Take the news out of the name otherwise MDN should stop spinning their opinions into the news they report on as well.

  9. Go for it MDN, we back your takes, and your headlines.

And as for North Korea, who knows, it may just be that he will step down for the lack of an iPod, it certainly won’t be for the lack Zunes… ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cool hmm” style=”border:0;” />

  10. +10 points to the first person who can find a global warming angle to this story
+20 points to the first person who can find a gay-marriage angle to this story
+50 points to the first person who can find a creationism/evolution angle to this story

let’s take this thread to infinity … and beyond!

  11. I hate Bush and Republicans. It’s completely their fault that N. Korea is the way it is and that mulim terrorists hate the US and the rest of the world. We need to be nicer to these people. If we show them that we are sorry for offending them and give them major concessions they will have to change their ways. I feel sorry for them any way. The US is the bad guy in the world. If it weren’t for the US the world would be a happier place.

  12. Good for the United States! Banning iPods and caviar’ll learn ’em! The only thing worse than nuking North Korea is not to allow San Francisco BMW dealers to sell their wares to Happy Workers for the Betterment of Paradise Collective No. 235. Now the peasantry will have to go back to eating snail eggs with their grass. Can the revolution be far behind?

  13. The DPRK doesn’t have enough energy to

run lights at night throughout most of

the nation, and most of the people walk or

ride bicycles. In short, they are very

    low contributors to global warming!

    BOOYAH! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cheese” style=”border:0;” />

  14. Yeah, I see irony here. People giving their opinion that MDN shouldn’t give his about a news agency giving their’s.

Do y’all need stepstools to get on your high-horses? MDN has a perfect right to offer his/their opinion. The AP reporter doesn’t, at least not in a news story(although it seems more like an analogy leaning toward humor to me, but I’m an optimist)

So there is my opinion about previous posts giving their opinion about MDN’s opinion about the AP reporter’s opinion. What’s your’s?

Oh, yeah, as long as we’re having to subsidize N. Korea, we should make sure the elites over there do not get to enjoy the benefits that the masses could not even imagine, let alone desire.

  15. Dear Readers,

Again, for those that do not understand the difference between a news article and an editorial:

MacDailyNews do not purport to be journalists. They clearly denote that it is their OPINION with the words “MacDailyNews Note” and “MacDailyNews Take.”

A reporter for The Associated Press is not supposed to inject his own “take” into articles. This AP article is NOT an opinion or editorial.

Sadly, journalism as a profession has declined to obscenely low standards.

  16. Gerbil,-“I hate Bush and Republicans”

Love thy neighbor as thyself. No need to hate anyone.

Dems are haters. They have condemed black people to misery with their schemes. Let your people free.–Trust in yourself, not a scumbag politician.

    “iPods rule.”

  17. This is a great approach to take. It’s not like the poor common people in North Korea are able to afford iPods and plasma TVs anyway, so cutting them off won’t hurt anyone but the tyrants in their government. And anything that pisses off Kim Jung Il is always a good thing too. Of course the leftist nuts around here don’t like it, but just like the tyrants, you can’t ever make them happy anyway.

  18. Come on guys, leave Yerbil alone.

    He had to be joking.

And if he isn’t, well, my mother taught me not to look down on the mentally challenged. Or liberals. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue wink” style=”border:0;” />

  19. There was a time when Americans understand the difference between reporting and commentary. Associated Press is a news gathering organization. AP should report facts; nothing more. MDN gives commentaray. It is sad that you people no longer CARE that there is a difference.

  20. I’m sorry, but this is very funny.

    1) A ban on any item that can be carried on the back of a bicycle won’t work, not to mention a ban on any item that can be hidden in one’s pockets. I can imagine farmer Kim smuggling an iPod inside a large radish dreaming of the profit he’ll make that’ll keep his family in scraps for a [cough] whole year!

    2) One can get more concessions out of North Korea by talks than by banning luxury items. The Chinese will listen to the American diplomats, nod sagaciously, and do very little about it.

General Yang will drive across the border for a diplomatic conference carrying a Rolex on his wrist, two cases of XO in his Bentley’s bar and a couple of iPods in the glovebox, and return a couple of days later wearing a new Seiko, a couple of old 45’s of Madame Kim’s folkloric renditions, two tubs of kimchi, five ( freshly minted) $100 bills, and 20 well-fingered gold bars in the back of an old Korean War era jeep.

The kimchi and Seiko will go to Korean Customs, the $500 to Chinese Customs, and the American diplomats will get the 45’s which will end up getting scrutinized by a secret NSA branch, returned as being of no interest and end up in eBay where it’ll be snapped up by a Kim kin.

General Yang will report that a defiant Kim seemed unbothered by the sanctions, and recommend that his superior go over for more talks next week. Both his and his superior’s daughters will be going to Harvard from the profits of the fuitless negotiations.

“The problem is there has always been and will always be this group of people who work at getting these goods illegally,” Reinsch said. Small electronics, such as iPods or laptops, are “untraceable and available all over the place,” he said.

  21. Does Father Christmas have to comply with international trade embargos?

Do all Christmas letters to Santa start with “Dear Santa, I have been a very good boy this year, and subject to international trade approval, I would be extremely happy if you were to reward my efforts this year with a shiny new ipod.”
    :
    :
    :

Also, I wonder if MS might blame the embargo on lacklustre sales – “we projected to sell 10 units in the US, which we have met…. and 10,000,000 units to North Korea, which has been impacted by recent embargos…. as such Zune sales have been slightly under expectation by 10,000,000 units).”

  22. “So like a scolding parent?” Just report the news, Ted. We don’t want or need your personal spin on it.

Um, fsck you very much. Why don’t you let Ted and his editors do their job and you focus on your little hobby, dick.

  23. Bad note, MDN. Where’s the “personal spin” in saying “like a scolding parent”? I took it as humor, because the whole thing about banning luxury items from that silly, fluffy-haired, spectacled man known as Kim Jong-Il is quite humorous. And scolding parents can and do take toys away from ill-behaving kids.

Not everything needs to be interpreted as political. Seeing politics everywhere, like in things like this (or in a kids movie about penguins, for that matter) you only show the thinness of your own political hide. Stop being so doggone paranoid.

MDN MW: ‘ball’ as in ‘Kim isn’t gonna have a ball anymore after this’.

  24. MDN has every right to post their opinions on their site. They aren’t journalists, they just collect links to news sites. The AP is supposed to offer the straight facts, that’s it. Journalism Professor is 100% correct, journalists seem to think their opinion is more important than the facts these days.

Regarding the actual story, I guess we’ll soon be getting to the point where the liberals place Kim Jong Il on the same pedestal that Saddam Hussein now sits, as the poor little leader being bullied by mean old George W. What a sad state of affairs this country is in.

  25. Right on, MDN.

When I was in the 4th grade (back in the early 70s), we learned that reporters are supposed to report the factual news, not inject personal slants. The NY Times was held up as the best example.

We’ve come a long way, and journalistic standards have gone a long way down since then. Again, the NY Times serves as the best example of this degradation.

MDN takes and headlines are opinion and I love them even when they go way overboard. The rest of the MDN reporting is pretty factual relative to the original article.

This is a fun site; don’t take anything too seriously here!

  26. Now Kim won’t be able to go down to his local BiMart, WalMart, Sears, Best Buy, etc. and get him an iPod… or HDTV, or hit the liquor store for some cognac… what the hell is the poor guy to do…???? I don’t know, maybe what he always does… buy it from someone overseas, and ship it home to himself… I doubt he’ll have his customs officials confiscate it. Such a punishment! That’ll get the a-bombs flying.

Incidently… what does any of this have to do with daily Macintosh news? I’m so sure…<sarcasm, for the ignorant readers> that GW specifically listed iPods in his little list of goodies, and specifically left out Zunes, right?

One of the best ‘off-topic’ articles yet. Next we’ll be hearing about how the Koran bans iPods and Macs… because, well…, in a way, it does.

MDN magic word: “horse” as in, what a bunch of horse shit!

  27. Firstly, when MDN is passing on recycled news – which is what it does mostly – it is a news site. MDN’s take is therefore spin.

When MDN’s only employee (Steve Jack) writes his op-ed pieces (which you can see under Opinion, then he’s being a blogger. Or do those rules only apply to Paul “Say For Pay” Thurrott?

Also, MDN’s credibility on providing an impartial commentary is undermined by the almost absurd amount of Apple-oriented advertising this site now carries. Everyone has a right to make a living or pay for their bandwidth, however some of MDN’s pieces are merely designed to generate page impressions as we all frenetically back into our corners for a good fight.

Now (on topic), whilst banning the sale of iPods may seem like an absurd waste of time, it should be remembered that the guts of an iPod was partially used in the proof-of-concept Galileo (European) GPS satellite as a cheap, lightweight core of a computer. Presumably, there might be a concern that an iPod could be repurposed to create a highly portable guidance system or somesuch, so – whilst the ban will probably be ineffective and agreeing with this administration is not normally my thing – one has to say it’s the right thing to do.

  28. People…if you are going to crap on each other here, at least make it funny. If I have to read through that garbage while I read the more intelligent posts, then I want to laugh. Crapping without humor is like….well…..crapping without humor.

Seriously, since N. Korea is extremely poor and filled with starving people, then exactly how any iPods are they expecting to import?

  29. Clearly, this is a ploy to garner additional favors and donations from Mr. & Mrs. Gates! This can only mean that all of North Korea will be forced to buy…Zunes. It is no coincidence that MS has indicated sales of Zunes are in line with their expectations! With all of North Korea on board, MS will indeed meet their expectation of XXX,407 sold!

MW: A “lot” more Zunes will now be sold!

    …or not.

  30. This is actually hilarious enough as it is. Bush thinks holding back iPods and Plasma TV’s will change N. Korea’s foreign policies. Sounds like a headline from “The Onion”, but in fact this is truth. My goodness, the audacity and childishness is mind boggling. Nevertheless, it’s good PR for the iPod, that’s for sure…

  31. Buster and H.G. Wells,

The commoners in the DPRK have no

internet, and computers are very rare.

Only the top party elites are allowed to

have internet, iPods, or Zunes for that

matter. All information to / from the

    outside world is strictly prohibited.

When I say strict I mean you would get

thrown in a prison camp for political

dissent. The point of this ban (however

stupid it may be), is to make the luxurious

(relative term) lives of the party elites

and Dear Leader less comfortable. The common

    people are starving to death.

  32. “Seriously, since N. Korea is extremely poor and filled with starving people, then exactly how any iPods are they expecting to import?”

    Buster,

I think you missed the point. The ban isn’t meant to keep the North Korean citizens from getting iPods. There’s no way the average citizen could afford one. The ban is to keep Kim Jong Il from getting them for himself and his cronies. Who knows if it will have any affect, but it’s kind of a different take on blasting heavy metal outside a dictator’s compound.

    Fanatic Realist,

Gathering links to news stories written by other organizations and writing news stories yourself are not even in the same universe. MDN gathers links to other sites where others have written stories that are somehow of interest to the Mac community, and often times, they comment on the story, just like you and I do. That has nothing to do with being a “journalist” and reporting for the AP. They don’t claim to be journalists, so there’s nothing wrong with offering commentary. The AP doesn’t have that privilege. It’s not about the comment the reporter made, it’s that he made it.

  33. Maybe the US should ban hair products. Has anyone see Kim’s hair? I’m glad that the US Gov. is issuing these forms of protest, maybe more countries will follow. I think Kim knows his wee-bombs aren’t any match for the US Military.

  34. First: mike k. rules! – funniest comments I have read in a long time. Nice.

    Onto the topic:

“I’m not so sure that angering a man who has control over nuclear weapons (with an apparent itchy trigger finger) is such a bright idea.”

<no sarcasm>Good point. Forget angering him, I say we kill him instead.</no sarcasm>

The worst part about reading this article is the image that will forever be seared into my memory: Kim Jong Il on a Harley Davidson!!! The guy is a freakin’ midget. Even a 2nd gen iPod shuffle is too big for him to carry around.

  35. “The Bush administration wants North Korea’s attention, so like a scolding parent it’s trying to make it tougher for that country’s eccentric leader to buy iPods, plasma televisions and Segway electric scooters,”

This is brilliant. The Bush administration wants to restrict consumer goods to N Korea because of its nuclear program that I’m not sure if anyone has confirmed that N Korea’s dictator even has any nuclear capability. N Korea can’t even feed itself, yet, the Bush administration had no problems in allowing American companies to support India’s nuclear power program.

Even though India is not a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Bush believes India is doing enough to ensure against proliferation risks. Who needs treaties, programs or laws when you rely on beliefs.

A while ago, India had a big-name scientist that had been giving nuclear secrets to other countries including Iran and Libya. Thanks for keeping us safe Bush.

  36. Bush causes all world problems. The world was a peaceful place before Bush. Bush very bad man. No such thing as terrorists. Just excuse by Republicans. Please US just be nice to rest of the world and they will be nice back.

  37. 1. Fanatic Realist had a good point (N. Korea’s potential to modify ipods).

    2. All the complaints re: opinion vs. journalism

Like you might hear a Radio, or TV show host say when a listener calls in to complain about a perceived slant (either way)-

    “Its my show!”
True enough. Don’t like it? Don’t visit!

Besides, all great Comedies inject commentary, and offer it up as “reporting”.

Faux “news”, Rush LimpBalls, Mann Coultergeist, Fawn Hannity, on and on….

Me? I prefer CNN. They report. I decide. Fair and Balanced.

    Welcome to the Social.

MW: “act”, as in TT- ACT YOUR AGE!

  38. I hate Bush and Republicans. It’s completely their fault that N. Korea is the way it is and that mulim terrorists hate the US and the rest of the world. We need to be nicer to these people.

It’s America’s Fault that Kim Jong II is starving his people with one hand & fondling the nuke button with the other?

It’s America’s fault wild-eyed Muslim fanatics look for reasons to hate, and actively seek to mass-murder the innocent?

The fact is one can’t reason with the unreasonable. These people only understand throat-slashing brute force. This is not the Lifetime Channel; “being nice” and offering a group hug is NOT going to appease these people.

If anything, half of America’s problems are from us being TOO nice.

  39. The Bush administration is the root cause of all evil on the planet.

IOW, all evil acts must occur at GWB’s order? I see…

The US is a very evil place. It will fall.

So what’s your model of a good place? Taliban Afghanistan? How about Nazi Germany?

For America being so evil, why is there a fence proposed to keep immigrants out? Are that many Mexicans that anxious to go to hell?

You’d better dig a little deeper of you think American policy is the root cause of world evil. What are you gonna do when communist China starts poking around the world? How about a resurgent Putin Russia?

    Things could definitely be worse.

As for the iPod: why is anyone doing business with the likes of North Korea? Those with conviction should already be doing their own embargoes.

  40. A R

What is your shockingly crappy point? That would be boring!

Of course I could always throw in some silly half truths about Democrats, but that would be really juvenile…

    Yerbil Tang

Keep ’em comin’. Be careful, though. If you aren’t silly enough, the left will nominate you. Any sillier, and Dean will be ousted.

    İViva la Rush revolution!

  41. What’s a matta Titty?
Can’t look yourself in the mirror?
If you’re going to support demeaning, dehumanising and debasing others because they’re “Iraqis” why dontcha like that video?
I can see you on that truck, I tell you.
    You sick asshole.

  42. “So like a scolding parent?” Just report the news, Ted. We don’t want or need your personal spin on it.”

There is nothing wrong with someone adding personal comments to a story. The danger comes when facts are altered (also called lying) or when certain facts are intentionally left out of the story, thus giving the story a certain “tilt” to one side.

You have to give credit to people for being smart enough to know BS when they read it or watch it on TV. Fox news has had a sizable drop in their rating as well as a ratings drop in individual shows as O’Reilly. People are beginning to wise up. But there will always be a certain number of people who will put their “religion” above facts and common sense. These people are Fox news core viewers.

  43. bjr

“You have to give credit to people for being smart enough to know BS when they read it or watch it on TV. Fox news has had a sizable drop in their rating as well as a ratings drop in individual shows as O’Reilly. People are beginning to wise up. But there will always be a certain number of people who will put their “religion” above facts and common sense. These people are Fox news core viewers.”

I challenge you to show where Fox has given less information on a story than CNN or MSNBC or the major networks. I watch all of these, and go back to Fox because they give MORE of the news, many times the conservative angle that is usually missing from the other networks.
The have their angle, Fox has their’s. I don’t get better news from Fox, just more, and that drives the libs crazy, because that is all they notice, the angle they don’t like or have to always hear on the other networks. And religion has nothing and everything to do with it. Who the Hell are you to claim people put it above reality? And who are you to claim it does not influence other networks?

The “slump” you talk about will be until the next election cycle (or disaster) at which point ALL news viewership will rise.

  44. Fox News is NEOCON FUD!!!! They lie, lie, lie! The mainstream media CNN, MSNBC, etc. are the gossiple. They never distort the facts. Fox News is a terrorist organization. MoveOn.org, Michael Moore, Barbara Streisand are the true heros!!!!! Down with America! Europe kicks the USA’s ass in every way!

  45. Gary, brilliant!

Now, which part of the M.E. are we hitting?
    How about Lebanon?

Ok, Lebenon. 40-45% Christian. Spread around a bit, too.

    OK, READY? AIM. FIRE!

dumb dipshit. Want some of you red-neck jack-offs form a new country?
You can wallow in your own shit, swill beer and watch Faux “news” together….

Oh, wait. You do that now.

  46. We could hit Lebanon (correct spelling you nimrod) and get the Christians to help us moron. The Christians aren’t the ones causing the problems there you bafoon. It’s the insane mulims and the libs like you enabling them. We need to hit the middle east very, very, hard.

  47. I don’t know if I can think of another time MDN has criticized a writer for politically spinning his/her article. Maybe they’re right, but it doesn’t seem to fall in line with the usual intelligent, Windows-bashing/Mac-promotion. I didn’t really see any problem with “like a scolding parent” and I wouldn’t have even noticed it had MDN not pointed it out. It’s an accurate metaphor anyway. This is either a blatant example of bias on the part of MDN, or just a ploy to increase the number of comments and generate ad revenue.

So MDN, stick with reporting Mac news and comment on it in the usual intelligent unbiased manor. These political discussions may be good, but this is not the place for them.

  48. Wow, Gary. You got me there. I hit a wrong key.
Guess that negates (use a dictionary) my whole arguement.

You, Gary, are a pathetic piece of slop.

    Move. Away. far, far away.

    MW-“science”.
Don’t hurt yourself on that word, GARY.

(‘cuz in Mississippi, they’re doin’ away with fractions!)

    That is actually triue.
It’s not the heat, it’s the stupididty.

  49. Mort Kondrake and Fred Barnes.

The gay duo. What a couple of feeble tards.
See?That’s why Faux “news” is so ridiculous.

    Who would take them seriously?
    Especially with Chrissy Wallace hosting.

Then we have to hear Michael Barone. Barone. Moan.

    See the connection?

  50. A R

Are you trying to say you don’t like the President? ‘Cause I’m starting to get that idea…..

Could you please give us some more examples of his failures? We don’t hear near enough about that.

I think the more people you can get to hate our President, the happier everyone will be. After all, who doesn’t want to hate the person that represents our nation to the world?

I just hope our next President isn’t a monkey. Monkeys don’t make good Presidents. They are not as smart as humans. The only thing worse than a monkey is a snake. Those make horrible Presidents. They only think of themselves (even when they mate) and kill people in parks. At least monkeys are nice and can see the world around them. They also enjoy a large family. Snakes like to hide and strike out at people who stumble on them, like that reporter who worked for NBC for 14 years and then ABC for 14 years. Ouch! I bet he stays out of the parks!!!

Hey, you know a snakes worst enemy is a hawk, and there is a chickenhawk circling the White House trying to get in. Those chickenhawks are dangerous, always looking for something to devour, and then they go and shit on whoever is under them. They sit on the fence all the time and try to figure out which side has the best food. They sure do look small up against a real hawk, though.

Well, I guess I better go, I need to leave plenty of space for other people to rant. Hope you slept well.

    Thanks y’all
    Two Time Monkey Voter

  51. Always Wrong,

I live in NYC and went through 9/11 here. What about you Always Wrong. What rock did you crawl out from? You sound like you’re about 12 and are sneeking onto your mommy’s computer. You have proven yourself to be a complete idiot from all of your ill informed posts.

  52. My posts are DECIDEDLY informed.
9/11. Whats your point? (I have been in the North Tower MANY times.

So, why are we diddling around in Iraq, Gary?
    Be specific.
    Where is Osama Bin Laden?

Now, if you’re going to type “we’re fighting them over there, so we don’t have to fight them here”, don’t even bother.

  53. I, a Dem was once a regular Fox viewer before and after 9/11 and the Iraq war. I supported the war and the president. My turning point against the Bush administration was a week or two after the US entered Iraq. The liberal media news, as republicans refer to it, asked, “where are the WMDs”. Well, weeks turned into months and months into…and no WMDs.

I began watching other news sources and stayed on top of the news more so than before 9/11. I began to see Fox News for what it is, a propaganda tool for the republican party. Fox news always show Dems as unpatriotic, un-American and against family values. Fox also portrays the Dems as supporting the terrorists. Fox frames questions as to question anyones morality or patriotism on any topic. A couple of cases in point would be someone wanting to read a document before signing it into law or not supporting the Iraq war and speaking up against it.

Fox also periodically elects a Dem that’s in the news, especially after they make a dumb comment, as the spokesman for the Dem party. They show this individual and his/her comments as a typical Dem. Fox portrays the Dems as though they are a “race” of people and not a political group.

Fox doesn’t stop there. Hollywood is another favorite target of Fox that they also portrayed as a “race”. Hollywood is just a city in California. The Dems much like the Reps are made up of many races and religious backgrounds. Dems, celebrity or common person alike, have a right to speak freely. Their comments represent their own personal believes and no one else’s.

Fox uses their tele-prompt system at the bottom of the screen as an in-the-open subliminal messaging system. During the State of Denial book critiquing the Bush administration, Fox framed a question at the bottom of the screen “..are the Dems or Reps in denial..” Something to that affect. Even though it is a republican President, house and senate who are in control, but only until Jan ’07.

Before the the last election Fox showed ex-congressman Foley at the bottom of the screen with a “D” for democrat next to his name. This is who Fox news is, a tool. Fox news is not arrogant, they simply know their core viewers. These viewers only watch and hear conservative programs because to some extent they need to hear a particular point of view regardless of facts to re-enforce their beliefs.

TowerTone, you are the character that on a different post called me a liar on a point. You than proceeded to provide proof from a US government site that only proved my point. You then denied what you wrote and then tried to spin the issue. This is who you are. As you said, you need that conservative angle or slant. As for most of us, we do just fine with facts. Facts don’t have or need a slant. It is only when you want to take the sting about a fact or dilute it that one puts a angle on an issue.

  54. Always Wrong you simpleton,

We are starting in Iraq because of numerous reasons that are far too complicated for pin head sized brain to comprehend. We need to not only be in Iraq but also Iran and Syria. The only reason Japan surrendered was because they were nuked. We’re going to have to come up with a solution sooner or later that is equally compelling to get these nut cases to stop. Whether it’s completely banning religion after taking out these nut cases or something else. You watch we will get nuked sooner than later by terrorists and I’m sure you’ll side with them again. We will get nuked because we are not hitting them hard enough now. The UN had major sanctions against Saddam that they were unwilling to enforce just like they will not enforce anything with N. Korea, Iran, etc., etc., etc. There are thousands of terrorists in Iraq getting taken out daily. You ask where’s Osama? He could be dead. If he’s alive he’s most likely in Pakistan. Do you suggest we go to all out war with Pakistan to get him. Is he that important? He may be and that may be what has to happen eventually. Islamic terrorist will not stop until they have either converted the world to bow down to them or they are killed. They have to be routed out of every dark hole they hide in. Not quite like the dark hole you creep out of to make your posts when your mommy isn’t looking. You can try to blame every problem in the world on George Bush but it just makes you and your ilk look like the complete jack asses that you are. You’ll be defending terrorists right down to the moment they chop your head off.

  55. bjr- nails it.

    Gary-

-There are thousands of terrorists in Iraq getting taken out daily (huh?)

-Do you suggest we go to all out war with Pakistan to get him? (no, the Taliban.)

Osama? He could be dead. If he’s alive he’s most likely in Pakistan. ……. Is he that important?

George Bush but it just makes you and your ilk look like the complete jack asses that you are. You’ll be defending terrorists right down to the moment they chop your head off. (Who is defending terrorists? You can’t be for real, so I’ll ignore you from now on. No one can be THIS stupid.

    Thanks for the entertainment though.

  56. No, Wendildo, let us hear you dispute my points, on merit, one by one.

    Ok, go.

Or, Wendildo, (unless you are really “Gary” and are just a chicken-shit):

-There are thousands of terrorists in Iraq getting taken out daily (huh?) IS THAT TRUE, WENDILDO?

-Do you suggest we go to all out war with Pakistan to get him? (no, the Taliban.) WHO SHOULD WE GO TO WAR WITH, WENDILDO?

WHO IS DEFENDING TERRORISTS, AND HOW GAR… ER… WENDILDO?

  57. bjr

If I called you a liar, and I was wrong, then I apologize. It would be nice if you pointed me to the post of claim, but I will take your word for it, but only because you claim you didn’t lie. You might have still been unintentionally wrong.

As far as Fox, you gave your opinion, and that is fine. I could also tell you of the years and decades I watched the three networks, starting as a child when my father was in Vietnam, not understanding why the news said one thing, my father and his friends first hand reports another. You make that call.

I lived close to Washington D.C., in Reston, VA, (heavily Democrat) during Reagans final term and Bush Sr.’s first. I met many people, of both parties, who set me straight on what was really going on up on “the hill”. They included people from the State Dept., F.B.I., N.S.A., lobbyist, and even the Secret Service (my neighbor was on the Bush Sr. Kennebunkport detail)
These were real people, who lived and worked all around me, who new when the media was just sellin’ papers, and when leaks were made to sway opinion, good or bad. The skeptism I gained from the early 70’s was snowballed by learning how to find the facts, not just the p r.

Jump ahead to 2000, past the Clinton years. The media that I watched was mainly CNN, PBS, CBS, ABC and NBC (I was partial to Brokaw, and highly recommend his book, “The Greatest Generation” of which both sets of my grandparents were a part, [not in the book, though]) I never watched Fox, didn’t consider them “established” yet I still saw the same constant negativity of America that I had seen as a child, trying to understand what my father was doing in Vietnam. It was in the papers and the Sunday morning shows, (save for George Will, and a sometimes cantankerous David Brinkley, who I miss greatly, and who also had many great books. “Washington(DC) Goes to War” is another I highly recommend)

Now it was about this same time (2000) that I began listening to Rush. A friend of mine in Dallas had told me years before about him, but I had no desire to listen to someone preach, and anyhow, I had plenty of music by the Allmans, Miles, Jaco, SRV, Methany, Joni, Dwight, Merle, The Boss, Bela, and the Bay City Rollers(ok, that was a test) to enjoy. But since I drive so much (average 1000 miles a week) I finally listenend to him for news on the election, hoping not to be talked down to. Well, let me tell you, just like you and I and most others here come to MDN to discuss Apple (?) because we all have a love and understanding for it, I found that was what the Rush show was, only for conservatism. He covered very little ground that I hadn’t already considered, but it is always nice to know there are others who think like I do (different?) If more Macheads understood that Dittoheads are just a different club, then maybe y’all wouldn’t look on us as if we were Microsoft. Matter of fact, quite a few Macheads call in. And even if you don’t agree with him, he is far more entertaining than Al or Randi, who I listened to today, just like every time I go through Little Rock. (I even skipped Rush today to listen to my new Marcus Miller CD)

If you are wondering what this is all leading up to, then I hope you will check back later. It’s Miller time, and I’ve got five after…

  58. TT- good post.
And I agree, Al Franken (while brilliant) WHAT A STUPID CHOICE FOR A TALK SHOW HOST(radio). Same with GIRAFFE-ALO. Good god.
Although recent TV appearances have been HILLARIOUS.
He has balls. A little to esoteric, though.

    Can’t agree about Rush, though.
    Different, somehow.

  59. We love Rush! It’s so nice to see the libs and the lib media exposed for the slimy snakes they are! That means you AR. I can tell you seem to enjoy all of the negative attention you seem to be getting. Probably the only place you can get any.

  60. Millie, are you able to, capable of, etc., responding to any of my points?
    Don’t you feel ridiculous?

    You can’t be serious.
    Address my points.

Do you realize that you sound like a 10 nine year old?

So, Rush? You mean , RUSH LIMBAUGH? Wow. You sure know how to pick your heros. Now I see why you guys lost in Nov.
    Are you drug-addled too, Millie?

And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up,” Mr. Limbaugh declared on his radio show on October 5th, 1995.***

The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too.”***

Here is what the record to date shows: Mr. Limbaugh’s housekeeper, Wilma Cline, approached Florida media and Florida authorities to reveal that she had acted as Rush Limbaugh’s drug buyer for years, purchasing “more than 30,000 hydrocodone, Lorcet and OcyContin pills,” and she reports he “took as many as 30 OxyContin pills a day.”**** Florida authorities then began investigating, and Ms. Cline’s allegations have apparently proved solid, certainly solid enough for the State of Florida to take action.

DECEMBER 5–Rush Limbaugh illegally purchased hundreds of prescription pills a month and sought a quartet of doctors to fuel his drug addiction, according to search warrant applications unsealed yesterday in Palm Beach County Circuit Court. Investigators executing the searches, which took place November 25 at offices used by Limbaugh’s South Florida physicians, accused the radio personality of “doctor shopping,” or improperly seeking out practitioners to supply him with an inordinate abundance of painkillers OxyContin, Lorcet, Norco, Hydrocodone and Kadian, the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, the cholesterol-lowering drug Niacin, and Clonodine, which treats high blood pressure. Under Florida law, doctor shopping is punishable by up to five years in prison. The affidavits, one of which you’ll find below, indicate that authorities began investigating the talk-show host last December after meeting with Wilma Cline, Limbaugh’s former maid, and her husband, who told them that they sold Limbaugh “large quantities” of pharmaceutical drugs “over the course of many years.” (5 pages)

  61. Now I get it. He’s HIGH. “…Limbaugh picked up 1733 hydrocodone pills…”.
    Holy Shit!

“…. Limbaugh had decried drug use and abuse and mocked President Clinton for saying he had not inhaled when he tried marijuana. He often made the case that drug crimes deserve punishment….”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! 1,773 HYDROCODONE PILLS. Man!!!

Rush is one slimy snake. It’s nice too see him exposed.
    Speaking of exposed slimy snakes;

    Rush Limbaugh Detained With Viagra.

    HHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!

  62. “more than 30,000 hydrocodone, Lorcet and OcyContin pills,” and she reports he “took as many as 30 OxyContin pills a day.”

The more I think about it….
THIS is the mouthpiece of the right?

    This MF is WASTED!!!!
On the air , ranting and raving- HE’S F*CKING HIGH!!!!!!!!

    When will the hilarity stop?

    THIS IS FUN!

  63. I’m sorry, I can’t help it…. got to get it out…. might explode if I don’t…..

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA

    BBWWWWAAAAAAAAAA HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAA HHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

    There. That’s better now.

  64. So what does Rush’s problem with pain killers have to do with him exposing the liberal slime for who they are over and over and over again turd brain. You are just trying to put up a red herring and no one here is buying it girlie man. Clinton smoked pot and is a sex addict. We could go back and forth about this. Obama admits to using pot. I can only imagine how many drugs your heros Al Franken and Michael Moore have done and still do. Bottom line AR Go F*CK yourself ASSH*LE. If you think you are so smart I would love to meet you in person and debate this with you. I live in Manhattan and travel a lot on business so I can meet up with you any time and any place. Or as others have said I’m surre your mommy wouldn’t let you out of the house.

  65. I’m 4 1/2 hrs. away, 17, to 81 north.
Let me ask my mommy! (Actually, she died in ’00).

“So what does Rush’s problem with pain killers have to do with him exposing the liberal slime for who they are over and over and over again”

He’s HIGH! The whole time he did the program. Everything he says is a drug-addled fantasy.

    Wow. Smoked pot. Ooooo.

I am smart. And Right ALWAYS RIGHT!

    Meet up?
You are giving me the creeps.

    Liberal slime, huh?
    No, I guess I couldn’t counter that!

  66. ” The drugs done by liberal presidents are ok but the ones done by Rush are not”.

    Yes, THAT IS CORRECT!

    There, dipshit, you got it!
Now don’t make me come down there and kick your winey little ass.
Try to grow some hair on your chest.

  67. Where, Marcus. Where am I wrong?
    Be specific.

    YOU CAN’T!!!!!!
So, why do you embarrass yourself with childish remarks?

“Don’t listen to diareah being spewed out by AR”.

You are a genius, I can see.

Man, talk about ungracious, sore losers. Like that Tom DeLay.

    “Democrats didn’t win. We lost”.

    Bye, Bye. It’s over.

    Always Right says

    “Republicans didn’t win. They lost”.

  68. “We could hit Lebanon (correct spelling you nimrod) and get the Christians to help us moron.”

Really, you mean Christians, those who follow the teachings of Jesus. Jesus, whose message to the world was of love, forgiveness and tolerance. That Jesus. You expect those Christians to what, maybe kill, torture and god knows what else in the name of Jesus.

Sining for Jesus. That’s what you’re advocating.

You are confusing Christians with those neo-christians who cherry-pick the bible and even add to it. I do believe all of these neo-christians are only here in America.

  69. ” Jesus, whose message to the world was of love, forgiveness and tolerance.”

That is cherry picking. There was much more to him than that. There is also a section in the Bible that occurs before His birth. Check it out. If you don’t believe me, ask a Jew.

  70. Nan.
Is that the best you can do?
At this point, I have to believe MDN makes up names, and puts these inane posts up, to generate responses (hits).

Nan. Do you know Jane? How’d the two of you like to be spanked. Hard. By a Lib? (OTK, bare-handed).

  71. Nan- it’s always RIGHT. (Who is always wright? Related to Orville?)
You like dirty talk in your ear? From behind? While I hold your pony tail for you?
(Is this your idea of a scumbag?)

How ’bout we watch a video of Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” speech, while I do it to you?

    Mission Accomplished.

Now THERE’S a scumbag. (Yes, I know the speech writers took it out of the speech. But they didn’t stop the video from being aired).

There. I am FAIR and BALANCED.
    See?

    I report. You decide.
    It’s a NO-SPIN ZONE.

    MW-“over”.

It’s over, Nan. Give it up.
“It’s All OVER Now”. (Rolling Stones).
