Preview of Apple’s WWDC: Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iPhone 3.0 software, new iPhone hardware
Saturday, June 06, 2009 - 10:05 AM EST

"Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off on June 8 in San Francisco, has traditionally been the site of the Mac maker's biggest announcements. This year will be no different, with the event expected to host the debut of a new iPhone running a powerful new operating system. On the computer side, WWDC attendees will hear details of Apple's next-generation operating system, Snow Leopard," Mitch Wagner reports for InformationWeek.

"Apple will almost definitely unveil its new iPhone at WWDC, although likely it won't go on sale for a couple of weeks after that. The first iPhone went on sale in late June 2007 and the second in early July 2008," Wagner reports.

"On the hardware side, one of the most significant features of the new iPhone will be its new processor. The original iPhone and last year's iPhone 3G used the same 400 MHz processor, but the new iPhone will likely have a 600 MHz processor, writes John Gruber on the blog Daring Fireball," Wagner reports. "The change won't be just a little speed boost, it'll be transformative."

"The new model iPhone will have double the RAM of existing models, 256 MB. "Prices will stay the same -- $199 and $299 -- but storage will increase to 16 and 32 GB," Gruber says," Wagner reports. "Also look for a possible 4GB iPhone 3G for $99. That's according to a report on the Boy Genius Report. But my colleague Eric Zeman is skeptical, noting that the first-generation iPhone came in a 4 GB model that was discontinued after a few months. I agree; I think people who've already decided to buy an iPhone will pay a little more for a lot more memory."

"My gut feeling is that we'll see the new iPhones at about the same time as we saw previous generations, late June or early July," Wagner writes.

Full article, with more about Snow Leopard and what Wagner thinks you shouldn't expect to see at WWDC, here.

I have 3 teenage girls clammering for IPhones, the $99 version sounds like a great idea to me.

Jun 06, 09 - 09:22 am Comment from: Taz

Gee Rob, my girls wanted cellphones too. I told them you want'em, you buy'em. That way they take care of them. Too many KIDS now a days get everything handed to them. Sorry not in my house. As they are adults now, they have continually thanked me for making them pave their own way in life. Including medical college. Which is why I suppose I am not strapped like half of Americas parents. Certainly proves my point to my girls now.

@ Rob,

Just what you want, your daughters feeling as though they are cheap.

Why not just go all out and get them nothing, that way they feel like they are nothing?

My kids get an allowance, they can purchase whatever they want because they earned the money they received. My job is to house them, feed them, cloth them. I am not required by law to iPhone them. They want an iPhone they can get it the way I got mine........... have thier aunt buy one for them... Ha Ha

@ Taz

Thanks for the parenting lesson. Please send links to all your youtube videos showcasing how great your kids turned out. Like we give a shit.

I agree with your overall thought process but despise your condescending attitude.

On another subject, if the iPhone and iPod touch are to become pocket computers (as it seems many want them to be) they need an even faster processor and better RAM than that!

Jun 06, 09 - 10:53 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

I think kids should be seen and not heard. The little turds should be beaten twice a day whether they deserve it or not. That's how I was raised, and see how well I turned out!

OK, bad example. confused

The 4GB one may just be for overseas.

Jun 06, 09 - 11:47 am Comment from: Hm...

@ Sir Gill Bates

We had to live in a hole in the road. And get up half an hour before we went to bed just to lick the road clean!

Kids nowadays have it so easy...

Jun 06, 09 - 11:53 am Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@ Hm... ,

That gave me a good laugh!

"... hole in the road."

Hilarious! LOL

@Hm....

You lucky lucky bastard, what would I have given to live in a hole in my road. Come to think of it we didn't even have a road. Some people had it easy.

Your daughters secretly dislike you.

"Your daughters secretly dislike you."

They'll let him know when he's old and senile and needs help to accomplish the simplest task:

"Remember Dad, you have to pave your own way in life. And also change your own Depends. Sorry."

Just kiddin' Taz! grin

@ Taz,

I don't give a rat's arse about you or your daughters. Who the hell you think you are, giving me a moral lesson, you pathetic son of a bitch? Did I ask for one? I hope you die a lonely old man.

Whew - now back to the iPhone...

For me, it's not about the cost of the phone, $99, $499, etc. (within reason, of course), but the ridiculous monthly bill from ATT. The last time I checked, it was about $100 per month for one iPhone. Three in my family are on ATT, and one of us has last year's iPhone - that one iPhone costs $70 per month on the family plan!

As for as iPhone storage space, I have an 8 GB iPod touch with many books, about 20 extra programs, 100 photos, some music, and still have 5 GB free space. Unless I could use my touch as a thumb drive, I don't see needing more than 8 GB. Apple really messed up by not allowing the iPhone/touch to be mounted as an external disk like the earlier iPods.

Jun 06, 09 - 07:19 pm Comment from: Charlie

The $99 dollar 4-GB iPhone would be nice. But maybe they are bumping up the capacity to 16GB and 32GB because a new feature (video recording) will take up much, much more space on people's phones. They may be selling a 4GB iPhone WITHOUT video capability. That would make sense; having different features and tiers for the consumer.

Remember, the goal here, like the iPod, is to get iPhones in as many hands as possible while still relatively maintaining profit margins.

I am so glad you have chosen my way.

You will be warmly welcomed @ my abode once life is done with you. Lucifer

Gee one would think I committed murder or something the way SOME of these comments fell. Never the less it does goes to show you how people react when they are called to the carpet. Guilty Conscientious ? Thought so. I did not give anyone a lesson of any type. I merely stated FACT. If you crooners would think of how much stuff actually lasted longer when you had to pay for it YOURSELF, why then you would understand the theory of correctiveness. But obviously since you had it SO BAD growing up, you have resorted to corrupting the rest of the universe by giving children EVERYTHING. Including that education where they party'd more then studied. Cause if they studied more then we would not have the drop out rate & failures we have in schools across the country. Can't handle the heat big boys, get the hell out of the kitchen. If you care to debate, you will lose to the facts. As far as the YouTube comment there preytel, I would never lower my morals to the point of humiliation it would bring to just get a laugh from a baboon like yourself.

Thank God for Rob and Taz they managed to create a whole bunch of posts that (while they had nothing to do with the iPhone or Apple), also had nothing to do with politics!

Hooray.

Hey Lucifer, will you please go ahead and take that cranky bastard 'roger' right now? I'm sure he'll be right at home with all the other Republicans down there.

Oops. Sorry 'twilightmoon'. smile

The 99 dollar one will be an 8GB model, not 4.
