ProcessAway turns millions of iPhone and iPod touch devices into mobile credit card terminals
Wednesday, February 25, 2009 - 05:26 PM EDT

Rapadev today released ProcessAway for iPhone and iPod touch. ProcessAway allows mobile merchants the ability perform credit card charges on their device. Submit charges, captures, holds and voids. Full transaction log and extensive database functions. ProcessAway works over any available network connection, offering the convenience of accepting credit cards on the spot and the confidence of getting immediate authorization for a credit card payment.

The app works over any available network connection. Transactions can be processed at places such as conventions, street fairs, antique shows, and by business owners performing mobile detailing, on-site consultation or construction. Imagine having the ability to offer the convenience of accepting credit cards on the spot and the confidence of getting immediate authorization for a credit card payment.

The app performs captures, authorizations, voids and credits. It utilizes multiple database tables for recording transactions and repeating sale information, such as order, shipping, and customer info. There is also an option to add a gratuity to the final charge.

"Since the announcement of ProcessAway last month, there has been a tremendous amount of interest for versions that operate with other gateways," states Randy Palermo, Member of Rapadev, LLC, the developer of the software, in the press release. "We are currently expanding the line to accommodate these requests." The current version of ProcessAway works only with the AuthorizeNet gateway. "We realize there is a large number of gateways and resellers that can benefit by offering iPhone credit card processing. We hope ProcessAway can fulfill this need, and welcome contact from interested parties wanting to adapt the software for specific gateways." Currently under development are versions for NMI, PayLeap, and Chase Paymentech, along with privately branded version for specific resellers.

ProcessAway for Authorize.net is available in Apple's iTunes App Store for US$19.99.

Bloody hell this is getting ridiculous!

Will there be anything that the iPhone won't be able to do?

Feb 25, 09 - 07:05 pm Comment from: Jubei

Cool, maybe Apple can use these instead of what they use now at the store. Maybe? I think they are using a Windows based system for it. I could be wrong.

Where do you swipe the card? Does it store the credit card information on local database? Do I want to let various merchants keep my CC info on their mobile phone?

This is really good to here. There is a similar service that people in China are using. They actually have their cell phone get scanned to ride bus terminals.

@ freebeerL If you don't want my company knowing your credit card number DON'T PAY BY CREDIT CARD.

Inner Fence else has a similar app for Credit Card terminal for $50. I just wish it would pull people from my Contacts list so I don't have to type and retype basic info.

The iPhone isn't a good choice for pounding tent stakes. Also, you shouldn't use it as a cutting board.

Of course, all the data is transmitted in clear text between the iPod Touch/iPhone and the host computer.

Oh Hell! Now I can process those stolen card in short order! No more middle monkey to share with!

This is getting VERY strange..... Very fast! grin

@Dave,

Um, why would you say that? Authorize.net follows security protocols and the iPhone and iPod touch are capable of encrypted communication. Why would using an iPhone be any different from using a web browser or a dedicated mobile terminal? Please cite your source that this new product does not include the most basic security features that are present in all other Authorize.net products.

freebeer,
It looks like the iPhone user just types in the credit card number, and it is transmitted wirelessly to an account that you have with the company. But what happens after that, I don't know.

So, your questions are all valid ones. I want to know the answers, too.

I doubt that it is PCI and/or CISP compliant.

Feb 25, 09 - 09:34 pm Comment from: Roger Knights

This would be useful in countries with poor landline infrastructure, like much of the third world.

Feb 25, 09 - 09:46 pm Comment from: Peter

I have to admit, I've been waiting for (a) someone to do this and (b) see if Apple Stores change from using the Windows terminals that they all carry around to iPod touches that can read credit cards.

That's still one of those "embarrassing" Apple Store things.

Feb 25, 09 - 09:55 pm Comment from: Passerby

@schmluss,

Why would you doubt it's PCI or CISP compliant? It's from Authorize.net. All of their products are PCI and CISP compliant. Why would they risk their professional reputation and certification on something that wasn't.

Please cite your source that this product does not meet requirements.

$19.99 for something you can do in Safari for free. Go figure.

Authorize.net has a web-based Virtual Terminal. You log into your account securely, put the info into a form and bam - approval, capture, reimbursement, customer email, whatever you want. There is no need for a $20 app.

File this under "Sucker".

Feb 25, 09 - 10:42 pm Comment from: NCG598

But, would it be very easy to carry the phone instead of a laptop or desktop. Say, at a house, mall, or someplace else. Would you always carry the bulk or pay 20.00 and always have it with you?

If I do not have to carry a ton of equipment, the cost would be worth it. But truth is, I have no need for this. Maybe someone that does house care or nails. But, I believe they prefer cash. Not easy to track straight cash as opposed to credit actions.

We actually use Credit Card Terminal from Innerfence because it integrates with Ring it Up POS. They are great for trade shows where we can run orders and charge customers seamlessly with those two apps and it emails the receipt to the customer. I like that integration much better. They work great (and everything is secure and PCI compliant).

Yes, but does it squirt?

Feb 26, 09 - 01:10 am Comment from: The Other Steve

To clarify, my comment was related to storing card numbers and "is there "anything the iPhone won't be able to do?"

Feb 26, 09 - 01:16 am Comment from: @Jubel

You're accurate.

Apple does use a winblows based mobile credit card charge terminal at their stores.

There is a Youtube on this app here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIaV0Cg0PgM

I can see a whole lot of use for this for small business owners. I'm a contractor (really just a handyman) and can get paid on the spot.

Also, I buy a lot from Craigslist - most people want cash in hand but if this was available.....?

How about flea markets and garage sales? Taxi cab drivers I'll bet would love something like this.

I can't count the number of solicitors who come knocking on my door looking for odd-jobs like cleaning my gutters or selling something like local discount books...

I see a lot of upside to this app. I don't see a big problem looming with drugs or hookers using this app. If someone is stupid enough to buy drugs or pay for sex with their credit card and create a paper trail both parties in the transaction can be tied to might be a good thing BTW.

It was only a matter of time until sometihng like this came up. At least it is not an embedded chip in hand....
