Quite possibly the coolest Apple iPhone app ever: ProRemote Pro Tools controller
Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - 12:55 PM EST

"Here's a killer application that fully realizes the possibilities of touch surfaces as specialized control interfaces: ProRemote converts the iPhone or the iPod touch in a wireless control for Pro Tools LE with realtime feedback. While this may seem limited to the audio world, it shows that having this kind of power in such a tiny package could solve the problems of many users," jesus Diaz reports or Gizmodo.

Video of the ProRemote Pro Tools controller applicaton in action:

Diaz reports that while the beta will be here next week, the final software won't ship until Apple releases their native iPhone SDK and the developer, Alex Lelievre, can obtain Apple's iPhone software certification (whatever that may entail). Lelievre hopes to release version 1.0 of the app sometime in late February for around US$150.

Love it. Very cool. When FLASH is enabled, the iPhone complainers on the Windows side will finally STFU.

Dec 11, 07 - 01:05 pm Comment from: John

Oh man, that's so way cool! I might just have to buy that sucker.

Now I want this same remote system to work with Maya so I can control blendshapes and other slider-based interfaces in Maya with my iPhone as a remote.

How sweet it is.

Dec 11, 07 - 01:07 pm Comment from: Petey

Very nice!

The possibilities are endless for this!

Dec 11, 07 - 01:09 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

OMG.

YES.

Dec 11, 07 - 01:10 pm Comment from: January 24, 1984

Does anyone know of a kick-ass AV Receiver I can get to work with this, and my Mac Mini (driving an HDMI/HDTV)?

Dec 11, 07 - 01:12 pm Comment from: Synthmeister

Holy crap! I do audio stuff like this all the time and this is KILLER! Obviously doesn't replace dedicated control surface but man, what a great application.

And I will be able to write off my iPhone as a music expense when my Verizon contract runs out next year!

Dec 11, 07 - 01:15 pm Comment from: Buster

I want it to remote control my coffeemaker and toaster for the morning and then let it ring me when breakfast is ready. Then I will buy one...or when it comes to Canada...whichever comes first.

Dec 11, 07 - 01:17 pm Comment from: igads

This is cool, I want it.

I just realized what a geek I am.

Dec 11, 07 - 01:21 pm Comment from: NavyTim

Just think - the 'touch screen' would have a whole new meaning if they make an app that controls that "other gadget" for the ipod:

Holy S**t !!!
What a potential killer! I am really really impressed.
What next?
How many iPhones does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Dec 11, 07 - 01:26 pm Comment from: Ampar

" . . . the iPhone complainers on the Windows side will finally STFU.

Sadly, I don't think that will ever happen. There will always be a group that likes to complain if for no other reason than to hear themselves speak.

P.S. That was very cool. It reminds me of the Wii controller but in the world of multi-touch. A Photoshop controller for image touch ups or creating original artwork would be useful.

Dec 11, 07 - 01:33 pm Comment from: UltraVisitor

One step closer to the multi-touch mac of my dreams.

Dec 11, 07 - 01:33 pm Comment from: Ampar

"How many iPhones does it take to screw in a light bulb?"

One. But only if it's an LED bulb.
Remember: multi-touch lefty loosey, multi-touch righty tighty.

Dec 11, 07 - 01:51 pm Comment from: frisby

I dug the song.

Dec 11, 07 - 01:55 pm Comment from: Nutcracker

Nice...

That's a sweet-ass application.

MaWo: 'moving'. As in, 'I hope we see more innovative developers moving to put their apps on the iPhone.'

P.S.: if this app is any indication, I think we'll see the iPhone become more of a 'platform' in addition to it's being the most coveted telecom device... go Apple!

Dec 11, 07 - 02:22 pm Comment from: spyinthesky

Great potential but more immediately what was that music in the latter part?

Dec 11, 07 - 02:23 pm Comment from: question

does anyone know if you can multi touch it? as in move multiple sliders at once?

Dec 11, 07 - 02:48 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

That really primes the imagination...

Dec 11, 07 - 02:51 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ question

I would imagine that would require an update from ProTools itself. There is {ahem} another software company working on this for their UI for drawing and other things.

Dec 11, 07 - 03:14 pm Comment from: Docbop

Not very useful but cool they pulled it off.

Dec 11, 07 - 03:30 pm Comment from: Georgy Porgy

The song stunk...the app was cool.

Dec 11, 07 - 03:47 pm Comment from: Grigori

This is trés magnifique. I can only imagine what will happen when Apple's own proapps like Logic start integrating this sort of thing. It'd be nice if the screen was a bit bigger, but still.

Dec 11, 07 - 04:23 pm Comment from: AlanAudio

The brilliant thing about that demo was that you didn't need to be told what was happening. You just looked at it and it was obvious.

Then just when you think it's pretty cool, they slide the fader sideways to access adjacent ones, then they turn it on it's side to get more short faders and then show how the screen flips over to access other functions. It's totally brilliant and so cleverly executed.

Obviously as I work in audio, this is something that has immense appeal to me in it's present form, but the incredibly intuitive way that you use this will translate into any number of other solutions. If Apple release a tablet with a larger touch screen, this is going to be awesome.

Many devices that you currently own will be able to be emulated in this manner. If it uses a display and some controls, the chances are that it can be emulated in this way.

I'm a Mac user, always have been, and I'll complain about no Flash on the iPhone because my Fantasy Sports scores are updated in Flash apps.

Dec 11, 07 - 04:42 pm Comment from: alex Lelievre

The app will support multi-touch once I finish up other features. As for a ProTools update, this is not necessary. ProRemote works with all current versions of PT that run on Mac OS X. Actually ProRemote will work with any app that support the Mackie HUI protocol.

Look for a completely different and cool surprise next month!

Dec 11, 07 - 05:27 pm Comment from: smackman

Unreal! great work on this.

smile

Dec 11, 07 - 06:18 pm Comment from: Brau

Wow! If nothing else, a wireless way to control your headphone volume when recording alone without having to run back to the computer. Very cool!

Dec 11, 07 - 07:03 pm Comment from: shen

we need a full VNC style app now. i want to be able to do anything my Mac can do by remote from the iPhone.

that. is. awesome.

Dec 11, 07 - 07:10 pm Comment from: Mac4lfe

Holly shit. That is jaw dropping cool. If only someone can design an App like this for my home entertainment system.

Dec 11, 07 - 07:12 pm Comment from: Anonymous©

Cool, very cool app. I saw another neat app, that reminded me of that Jeff Han video from over a year ago. It was a physics app, where the little globules you made, just like Han's video, had weight and all dropped to the bottom of the screen based upon their size. Then you could start bouncing them around. Very cool! It was on that french Hardmac website, recently, I think.

If I were a consumer electronics manufacturer, or pro audio, or pro video, or CAD/CAM, or...

I would be BEGGING apple to license touch screen/OSX for killer products.

New from Canon, dSLR with touch interface on back, resizing/zoom, etc...

New from Digidesign, ProTools touch interface 20" lcd...

Might some of these be in the works? One can hope.

Dec 11, 07 - 10:05 pm Comment from: JadisOne

One word. Wow!

Why don't we see Nokia N95s being hacked like that? Or where are apps like this since there are "thousands" of apps for other phones? Yeah, I thought so.

Dec 12, 07 - 11:05 am Comment from: Will

OMG! The mouse, trackpad, rollerball and stylus should all be teetering on the edge of obscurity soon enough.

(Oh yeah, that little red nubbin thingy too.)

Gone will be the days of "ass n' elbows" interface interaction. (Finally.)

Dec 13, 07 - 09:09 am Comment from: Dude

I just craped in my pants.
Photoshop version please.
