RBC: Apple’s back-to-school sales ‘massive’ - predicts over 3 million Macs sold in quarter
Thursday, August 21, 2008 - 11:15 AM EST

"'Massive' back-to-school Mac computers sales for Apple Inc. might not mean much to the market on the surface, but when each 25 basis point increase in market share produces an extra US$1-billion in revenue, things start to come into focus pretty quickly," Jonathan Ratner reports for The Financial Post.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky "told clients that data from 4,400 corporate IT buyers and adopters suggest 'unprecedented intentions' in the quarter. In the next 90 days, 34% plan to buy a Mac laptop and 30% expect to purchase a desktop," Ratner reports.

"As a result, he expects Apple’s share of the global PC market will rise to 4.2% in calendar 2009, up from 2.9% in 2007," Ratner reports.

Dan Frommer reports for Silicon Alley Insider, "RBC analyst Mike Abramsky now expects the company to ship 3.04 million Macs in the September quarter -- representing 41% year-over-year growth and 22% quarter-over-quarter growth -- up from his previous estimate of 2.8 million."

"What's helping? Among other factors: Apple's back-to-school promotion for college students that offers a free iPod touch -- $299 value -- with qualifying Mac purchase," Frommer reports.

Stop with the good news; APPL is tanking again!

Aug 21, 08 - 10:30 am Comment from: Jersey_Trader

2.9% to 4.2% or 44.8% change in world wide market share. So, are they afraid to talk about the double digit market share that the Mac now has in the USA?

Is it a niche computer or a tsunami switch from Windows to Mac OS X?

Aug 21, 08 - 10:36 am Comment from: jtc

@Ouate de Phoque
AAPL is tanking because of the previous article about apple getting sued for false advertising the iphone 3G and from people complaining.

It wouldn't surprise me if ballmer used some of that marketing money for vista to pay writers to make up random crap and over exaggerate any bad news of apple to drive the stock down.

As a Mac vetern from the original 128k version, it's nice to see Apple finally making it.

Of course it took years of HUGE FSCKING BETCHING AND MOANING and of course years of dedication while Apple went through many IDIOT CEO's with their OVER PRICED HARDWARE, just sucking our dollars and our dedication DRY!!!

We held on, it drove us BATTY. IT MADE US CRAZY.

Of course now I'm too old to participate in anything Apple, except to buy their stuff.

So you youngsters, don't be all smug and such, because

IF YOU DON'T GET UPSET AT APPLE, IT WILL SLID INTO DECLINE AND NEXT STOP IS MICROSLOPWARE!!

Remember that. Now go play in traffic. (not really) : )

Raving MacHead:

Just remember what they say about crazy:

The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world ... are the ones who do.

nuff said.

and don't worry about Apple forgetting - Mac People keep them in line - once you experience quality, you won't let go of it quietly.

The iPod touch giveaway is to help clear inventory ahead of the new model methinks.

Aug 21, 08 - 10:57 am Comment from: Raving MacHead

Oh jesus!!

MobileMe doesn't use SSL and Exchange does!! YIKES!!!

Like I've said before, Apple doesn't take your need for privacy and security into mind as much as it should.

Bitch and Moan, demand Apple change this immediately!

Aug 21, 08 - 11:13 am Comment from: freefromdesign

Speaking of not going quietly. My business school is making me buy a Lenovo. They will not stop hearing me complain. At least they are sticking with XP. This is nightmare material!

THANKS, Raving MacHead, I really APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS, I really DO!

By ALL MEANS, enlighten US AGAIN, ANY TIME.

I will GO PLAY IN THE TRAFFIC now. No, I'm JUST KIDDING.

Steve516 writes, "The iPod touch giveaway is to help clear inventory ahead of the new model methinks." Unlike Microsoft's Zune, Apple's iPod Touch has never experienced inventory much beyond that required. Apple keeps close tabs on the supply chain.

Unlike one of my neighbors, who has a college connection, I was unable to take advantage of the "Back to School" promotion. So I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the next Touch. (I'm hoping for a 16 GB for $299.)

What a pity that Apple do not offer the back to school deal here in the UK.

Aug 21, 08 - 11:44 am Comment from: cjstheman

@freefromdesign - My wife's school "preferred" her to get a Dell laptop. We stuck to our guns and got her a Macbook running Parallels. Not only does she love it, but 6 more students in her class just switched. If you're writing the check, go for the Mac.

Aug 21, 08 - 12:25 pm Comment from: @ Raving MacHead

Just because it doesn't use SSL doesn't mean it is not secure - there are other means of security.

Aug 21, 08 - 12:42 pm Comment from: freefromdesign

@cjstheman

I would absolutely do that but for the fact that they automatically bill my student account and give the computer to me on the first day. Otherwise I would get a new Mac and, if necessary, install windows on it.

"MobileMe doesn't use SSL and Exchange does!! YIKES!!!"

Really? Then why does my .me account on my iPhone have SSL checked on for both the IMAP and the SMTP servers?

"Bitch and Moan, demand Apple change this immediately!"

I guess they've already fixed it.

Aug 21, 08 - 01:18 pm Comment from: MacLovin

I'm going to be buying a new MacBook for school this fall. and she's gonna be a screamer!!!

Aug 21, 08 - 04:45 pm Comment from: 84 Mac Guy

I'm smelling the aroma of 10% market share in the breeze.

@Raving Machead

As another veteran of the original 128K Mac (hence the nick 84 Mac Guy), you are right in what you say but a little too negative for me. Apple isn't perfect, but I sense they have a strategy that most of us cannot even conceive at this point. The future looks very bright. However, I agree that we must all be constantly vigilant that Apple's quality stays top notch.

@Raving loonies,

So, this is an article about increasing Mac market share, and you're

posting about supposed security issues re iPhones.

How much does Billy Boy pay you?

Aug 22, 08 - 09:43 am Comment from: DH

The Mac is back .... and big time in the educational arena.
Apple's annual iPod promo provides a good incentive for students.
I can't wait to see the Jul-Aug-Sep quarterly results
