“Rob Glaser, chairman and CEO of RealNetworks, seemed a little miffed with Microsoft during the company’s Thursday second-quarter earnings call with investors,” Erica Ogg reports for CNET. “When it came time to discuss RealNetworks’ music strategy, Glaser opined that Microsoft’s decision to shift gears and brand both the Zune portable music player and service, which could hurt its former partners like RealNetworks, is unwise.”
“Glaser said, ‘We think this a case where our technology competitors, in this case specifically Microsoft, have literally thrown the baby out with the bath water.’ Therefore, he added, the move gives RealNetworks ‘a great opportunity to partner with a number of other companies who make excellent hardware and who are open to integrating tightly with our Rhapsody software platform,'” Ogg reports.

It does make sense for Real to partner with Sony, Samsung, iRiver and Creative,
Real makes the media software and supplies the download service. After all, no matter what you think of it, Realnetworks did develop RealPlayer, which was the #1 streaming music software/service before the players came on the scene.

I would love if Real teams with one or two hardware companies, say Creative and iRiver. I suspect they would be able to give Zune/Urge some pretty stiff competition, particularly if they could make the integration better.
This could be the beginning of direct competition against M$ by its partners. It would be cool. Instead of just taking whatever M$ offers, maybe someone will develop some competetive software for once.

MS is screwed. Frankly they have created a terrible situation for themselves. The end of this year should have had:

Windows Defender
Office 2007
Windows Vista
Zune
Urge
Windows LiveOneCare
Windows Live
and the list goes on.
ALL SIMULTANEOUSLY RELEASED. By doing this it would have created such a media frenzy and created a huge boost in revenues. Instead they have begun staggering releases and not releasing everything all at once. This is because some features have been available while others have not. This obnoxious situation will undoubtedly pull many investors away. If this were almost any other company no one would stick around while the company continues to release sub-par products after deadlines. It’s time for a new OS to step in, and who knows, Google or Apple could be the ones to do it. Although I’m sure Symantec would love to get in the OS industry tambien.

There won’t be anyone left to “partner” with after Microsoft scavenges Apple’s leftovers. But he is right about one thing. If there are any media player hardware makers that survive, and they don’t want to continue funding Microsoft’s competing Zune effort, they will need the PC interface software from another provider. I think Sony is the only one that does its own software. Personally, I think it will be Google or Yahoo that comes up with the solution. They’re probably working on it now…
A request: Anyone have morphing software out there. I think a morph of Balmer to Glaser would be great.
