Real’s CEO Glaser: Apple’s iPod/iTunes combo ‘threatens to turn off consumers’
Tuesday, April 20, 2004 - 09:13 PM EST

"RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser on Tuesday brushed off a recent rebuff from Apple Computer and called on Hollywood to keep new digital technologies open for all to use. Incompatible piracy prevention tools in new digital entertainment services such as Apple's iTunes Music Store and its iPod portable music player threaten to turn off consumers, he said," Stefanie Olsen reports for CNET News.

[MacDailyNews Note: Apple's iTunes Music Store has "turned off consumers" to the iTune of an annual run rate of 130 million songs per year. (source)]

"'It's kind of a Soviet model,' said Glaser, referring to Apple's closed environment in a remark that drew laugher from the audience at the annual National Association of Broadcasters conference here. 'Taking secure music off the PC is a morass of incompatibility. This is not going to fly in the mainstream market,'" Olsen reports.

[MacDailyNews Note: Apple's iTunes Music Store has "not flown in the mainstream market" to the iTune of 2.5 million songs sold per week as of March 15, 2004. (source)]

"RealNetworks has sought to position itself as a technology neutral Switzerland amid an array of competing and incompatible formats from Apple, Microsoft and others. RealNetworks' Helix multimedia software supports all major formats, but it hasn't won much support for its own technology among device makers," Olsen reports.

[MacDailyNews Note: Helix, Schmelix. How do you spell failure? H-E-L-I-X.]

Olsen reports, "The company had approached Apple CEO Steve Jobs with a proposal to create a technical alliance that would allow customers of RealNetworks' music service to play songs on the iPod, to no avail. That could now force RealNetworks into a deeper relationship with archenemy Microsoft, which has won support for its technology on dozens of players and plans a major upgrade later this summer."

[MacDailyNews Note: "Dozens of players" that all totaled together do not equal Apple iPod market share when measured by revenue. (source)]

The problem is that Real has nothing to offer. Why partnet with someone who has nothing to add?

Apr 20, 04 - 09:34 pm Comment from: treadlightly

If I had a wma player, I'd be scared silly after reading that m$ "plans a major upgrade later this summer." Should've gotten an iPod.

Apr 20, 04 - 09:35 pm Comment from: treadlightly

Glaser is a bit of a blowhard. I keep hearing his quotes, but don't hear any Real music. (Pun intended)

Apr 20, 04 - 09:37 pm Comment from: Rob

Does this guy ever shut up??? Talk about your sour grapes. Geez, no wonder Steve Jobs told him to take a hike...

Apr 20, 04 - 09:55 pm Comment from: john

The guy is an idiot - no wonder the Real player software is so bad with a CEO like that.

Apr 20, 04 - 10:22 pm Comment from: George

What do you expect, he came out of Microsoft and used to be a good friend of Gates and Ballmer. Wonder if ballmer taught him how to dance grin

Apr 20, 04 - 10:49 pm Comment from: jeff

I just went to Real.com because I've been hearing how they've been attempting to make the site more accessible and less "As seen on TV" like.

Well, holy crap, it is a bit better. I actually found two text links to the free player on the main page, albeit in very tiny print in random locations. Last time I remember putting Real player on a computer (<shudder>) I had to go like 3 pages in to find the link.

Seriously though, anyone who makes a webpage that inaccessible shouldn't be pointing fingers at other companies for their financial woes.

ole' slappy is back! Glazer is a god, he knows a little secret about something ole slappy holds near and dear to his iWalMArt connection. It's called the DJ, the Dell DJ, and it's going to tear Steven Pee Jobs a new one. Mark these words Dell DJ will have a case made by JCPenny soon. Ha ha why don't you all go iPotty, mac freaks.

Apr 20, 04 - 11:04 pm Comment from: iSteve

Just so I understand this idiot, the iTunes/iPod threatens to turn off customers? Yet, he wanted really bad to be a part of it? He wanted to join that which he felt turned off customers? Can you say sore looser?

NEXT!
(That would be you Chris Gorog).

Apr 20, 04 - 11:20 pm Comment from: MAC Convert

Hey slappy, if the Dell DJ is so great, why is even Michael Dell disappointed with it and it's "features"? Just read Mobile PC magazine's interview.

really, does anyone care what glaser has to say any more? (besides himself and his lackies).. It's a great day and age, a CEO of a company having a childish "temper tantrum" because he had an obviously bad idea and tried to push it upon someone who has very specific ideas and goals for his company... it's like an airheaded cheerleader trying to ask a picky genius out on a date.. well... you get the analogy..

Apr 21, 04 - 12:56 am Comment from: Adamac in Tokyo

Serious question for the knowing out there:

Why isn't Quicktime used by more companies for streaming?

What are the problems with Real Player? I keep seeing people write that it's crap, but what makes it so bad?

Been listening to AirAmericaRadio from Japan and their stream keeps going down. Very frustrating. They use Real Player. Does that play into why the stream keeps going down, or is it more connected to their servers?

Informative answer would be appreciated. I'm not a technophile, but am interested in the issues.

Thanks.

Apr 21, 04 - 01:40 am Comment from: Road Warrior

Well that Glaser...what a bitch.

To Adamac: Hello Tokyo.
Quicktime streaming: Cause MS puts their player on every machine out there. If you know the market share of Apple you should get an idea. Other factors of course but MS dominance plays a key role IMHO.

Real Player: Low quality video, the program is almost viral in nature. Constant messages appear to upgrade or other junk, icons installed all over the place and a few other features obnoxious to a lot of users.

I have found that Japanese servers can be slow and go down, but don't have much else to offer. Hey, its the net, not that effective yet.

Apr 21, 04 - 02:25 am Comment from: Matthew24

I do agree with Glaser, like I said in another forum, suppose I would buy a Sony CD and could only play it on a Sony CD player! Apple in this area of music has got as low as M$ and its policy is inconsistent with its overall support of open standards. We as Apple-fans should not turn a blind eye to Apple when they are starting to abuse the market like M$ does, instead we are the ones who should correct them. For me this means no ITMS-songs or or an iPod.

Apr 21, 04 - 02:39 am Comment from: john

I agree with Glasser - and by his logic he should open up the Real player too!

Apr 21, 04 - 02:44 am Comment from: david vesey

Rob Glaser is the "Baghdad Bob" of the music download arena:

"Everybody hates Apple!!"

"No one wants to buy iPods or visit the ITMS!!"

"Perhaps if Apple comes crawling to REAL we can save them!!"

These people are amazing! (Like Sony, and the others either predicting Apples ' approaching failure, or refusal to acknowledge that Apple is in the drivers seat and they are lost in the desert) Do they really think they can spin their way out of this, and that the buying public will be conned into creating this alternate, Bizarro world, that reduces Apple to nothing, merely because the SAY it is so?

If anyone is acting SOVIET, or 1984-like it's Rob Glaser!!

He is the perfect example of Double-Think!

I do have a complaint on quicktime. I tried to help a coworker download the Quicktime player onto her PC yesterday. I took her to the Apple Quicktime download site, hit "Download Quicktime" and it kept trying to force download iTunes (which I know QT does come bundled with). While I'd like her to discover iTunes I didn't want to force it on her when she only wanted Quicktime. We finally gave up. Way too Microsoft like for me. Come on Apple!!!

Apr 21, 04 - 06:48 am Comment from: kalel666

You are complaining that Apple gives QT and iTunes free for and bundels those together and forces PC users to try excellent Apple software? They can trash it if they don't like it. (okay it is PC so that may not be possible)
You want her to discover iTunes... How hard do you want it to be? How long she has to suffer?

Apr 21, 04 - 06:59 am Comment from: Brutno

Jump,

Here's your link. I did not see iTunes mentioned anywhere.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120297
If this does not work, here is the basic sequence I used:
Apple:Support(Tab at top of page):Software(Middle left of page):QuickTime.

It's all there. You may have to register to get the download, but I have not found that to be an issue with Apple as it is with some companies.

Apr 21, 04 - 07:15 am Comment from: iSteve

"For god's sake, will somebody flush this turd already?"

It appears he voluntarily jumped into the toilet and is reaching for the handle himself!

Apr 21, 04 - 07:28 am Comment from: Matt

"... a technology neutral Switzerland?" First of all, since when is Real Network's digital formats compatible with anything but RealNetwork's products? Adn second, if RealNetworks is, Switzerland, I guess we can say that the pairing of RealNetworks and Microsoft is akin to Switzerland surrendering to the Nazis (which Switzerland never did historically).

Apr 21, 04 - 08:06 am Comment from: treadlightly

Jump, Brutno's link worked well here (I was using an older version of QT). There was no mention of iTunes anywhere.

Rob, Rob and Paul. Members in good standing of the losers club. The 3 Stooges were much funnier and relevant then these bozos (now that I think of it, Bozo has it all over these guys too!)

Up next is Connect (announced for May) from Sony. Music will only play on new Sony Walkman digital players. Glaser, where's do you stand on this one?

Apr 21, 04 - 08:20 am Comment from: jfbiii

"I do agree with Glaser, like I said in another forum, suppose I would buy a Sony CD and could only play it on a Sony CD player!"

Bullshit. Rip the iTune to CD and reimport it. It can now be enjoyed anyplace.

The only "Soviet" style player in this is Glaser: from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs. Glaser can't invent anything worth a shit but he feels as though he is entitled to the work product of others. This guy is a character right out of "Atlas Shrugged." Life imitates art.

Apr 21, 04 - 08:31 am Comment from: Joe McConnel

As far as pc's go, Real and Quicktime have gone in opposite directions recently. Properly installed Real will play when asked to and disappear otherwise. Quicktime is constantly asking to update, an obnoxious way to sell.

That is why I recently dumped Quicktime and replaced it with this: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1049831315

Play .mov files in a WMP classic setting. Quality seems to be and improvement over quicktime too.

Joe,

Obnoxious? Look in the mirror!

Apr 21, 04 - 09:36 am Comment from: Jump

"You are complaining that Apple gives QT and iTunes free for and bundels those together and forces PC users to try excellent Apple software?"

One Guy from Finland, that is not the point. We (as Mac users) put down Windows for the way it forces its products on you. The way Apple has the Quicktime download set up now where it downloads with iTunes, they are doing the same thing. Yes, you can get rid of it but when you go to the Quicktime tab from the Apple Homepage and click download, it should download Quicktime and only Quicktime. Nowhere does it say the you will also be downloading iTunes when you click on it. Sorry, still too much like a Microsoft way of doing things for my taste.

Brutno, most users aren't going to try to navigate around to find the page you referenced (thanks by the way). http://www.apple.com, -> Quicktime tab -> download on the secondary menu bar is how by far the majority are going to find it.

Apr 21, 04 - 09:50 am Comment from: Joe McConnel

My, pk, I seem to have upset you. Just stating facts and opinion. Real used to be as bad as Quicktime is now. I hated Real then (but it is the main app for MLB replays), and when Quicktime started the same stuff, I was happy to find an alternative.

I do miss the 1970's brushed metal finish of QT however, it used to remind me of my old Marantz amp.

His choice of venue to do a smear campaign on Apple is very interesting.... Of the many computer groups out there, NAB is very Apple friendly, and in a great position of knowledge to know just how well the iTMS is really doing. They probably also read the news, and know that he was begging Apple just last week. Here's a clue bobby rob robert boy, they WEREN'T laughing with you...........

More like:

Gollem: Apple sucks! Stay off the Apple platform

Smeagal: We demand that Apple partner with us against M$, or we'll partner with M$!

Gollem: iTunes & iPod threaten to turn off customers!

Go back to the "Gates" of Mordor or cry to Michael "Saruman" Dell you freakin' freak. At least Gollem/Smeagal had some chance of being saved and something to offer.

Apr 21, 04 - 12:34 pm Comment from: ndelc

Glaser is some piece of work. His deal to Apple was akin to walking up to a millionaire and saying "I got a deal for you. You give me half a million, and in return, I'll give you this shiny nickel", except that's actually a better deal than what Real offered by at least 4 cents. He certainly seems to be concerned with how Apple is doing these days. He seems to really want to help them succeed. What a loser. This guy came from Microsoft? BIG SURPRISE! </sarcasm>

Joe, if you don't want Quicktime to ask you to update, change the date on your clock to the year 2020, open QT, and click upgrade later. It will never come back. Not on a PC anyway because Lord knows you'll be replacing it in two years. On a Mac you'd have to repeat the process in the year 2020 wink Seriously though, just upgrade to the Pro version. It's an incredibly powerful program.

That's precious! wink

Apr 21, 04 - 12:58 pm Comment from: Sailfish

Glaser is a drama queen and is spouting all this negative Apple stuff to cosy back up to M$.

I'd really laugh if M$ told him to f*ck off as well.

Glaser is like the SCO, dangerous and unpredictable. Best leave him alone, he and his company will die off.

Apr 21, 04 - 02:02 pm Comment from: Seahawk

Joe, Marantz amps were very good. Have good memories of those.
Concerning update requests from QT must be a case of preferences. I know, difficult on Windows apps: they do not ask to update: they do it no questions asked (even during a presentation making the whole hall laugh: Mac users a hearty one, Windows users an embarassed one)

My QT never ask to update as is set to manual update. Sure, maybe the default is update every time it is launched. Same for OS X Software Update: the user is in command: every time, daily, weekly, monthly, never. User choice.

ndelc,

Here in NYC, most of the homeless are harmless — you feel bad for them, you wonder if there is any real way to help these poor souls, and you hope never to join them, but all and all they will not bring harm to you.

Except...every now and then, there is some thugly looking guy on the subway begging for money who tries this tune, "someone give me some money so's I will not have to come to your house and rob you or knock you in the head on the street!" Sound like anyone we have been reading about?

Apr 21, 04 - 02:18 pm Comment from: Joe McConnel

seahawk, it used to be that the update request could be got rid of. I could not figure out how to do it on the latest version I downloaded (maybe 2 weeks ago). The alternative works great, so it is no problem anyway. Same to ndelc, and thanks for the idea, but I do like my clock to be accurate, since I gave up on watches.

i'm not getting this about the QT download not giving an option; there's a stand alone installer on the qt products page and hell even if you just click the QT " upgrade to pro" icon on the first page and check the Win98/Me/2000/XP and NOT QT & iT for windows2000/XP your gold...besides all this there's a new codec for QT ..MPEG-4 Part 10 that kicks butt http://www.digitmag.co.uk/news/index.cfm?fuseaction=displaynews&NewsID=3982&Page=1&pagePos=2 and spend the $30 for QT Pro and you'll never look back
