Report: Apple event set for Wednesday September 9; Music only (no tablet), The Beatles, too?
Tuesday, August 18, 2009 - 12:19 AM EDT

"It has happened every September since 2005, and in a few short weeks it will happen once again. Apple is indeed planning a keynote event for the week of Sept. 7, as reported by my colleague, Peter Kafka," John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD. "And according to sources close to the company, the date is Wednesday, Sept. 9."

The event, "is expected to showcase upgrades to the iPod line and an update to iTunes that may involve some sort of social element. Our sources insist it will not involve any discussion whatsoever of the tablet Apple is reportedly developing," Paczkowski reports.

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Note: 9-9-09 also happens be the date of another event:

Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI Music announced back on April 7, 2009 the release of the original Beatles catalog, which has been digitally re-mastered for the first time, for worldwide CD release on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 (9-9-09), the same date as the release of the "The Beatles: Rock Band" video game. On the same date, two new Beatles boxed CD collections will also be released.

According to Apple Corps Ltd., the albums have been remastered by a dedicated team of engineers at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period utilizing state of the art recording technology alongside vintage studio equipment, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result of this painstaking process is the highest fidelity the catalog has seen since its original release.

The collection comprises all 12 Beatles albums in stereo, with track listings and artwork as originally released in the UK, and 'Magical Mystery Tour,' which became part of The Beatles' core catalog when the CDs were first released in 1987. In addition, the collections 'Past Masters Vol. I and II' are now combined as one title, for a total of 14 titles over 16 discs. This will mark the first time that the first four Beatles albums will be available in stereo in their entirety on compact disc. These 14 albums, along with a DVD collection of the documentaries, will also be available for purchase together in a stereo boxed set.

Within each CD's new packaging, booklets include detailed historical notes along with informative recording notes. With the exception of the 'Past Masters' set, newly produced mini-documentaries on the making of each album, directed by Bob Smeaton, are included as QuickTime files on each album. The documentaries contain archival footage, rare photographs and never-before-heard studio chat from The Beatles, offering a unique and very personal insight into the studio atmosphere.

A second boxed set has been created with the collector in mind. 'The Beatles in Mono' gathers together, in one place, all of the Beatles recordings that were mixed for a mono release. It will contain 10 of the albums with their original mono mixes, plus two further discs of mono masters (covering similar ground to the stereo tracks on 'Past Masters'). As an added bonus, the mono "Help!" and "Rubber Soul" discs also include the original 1965 stereo mixes, which have not been previously released on CD. These albums will be packaged in mini-vinyl CD replicas of the original sleeves with all original inserts and label designs retained.

Also, eagle-eyed MacDailyNewsReader "Ned G." reports that the September 2009 issue of Bass Player magazine (not yet available online) states:

"For modern-day Beatles fans, access to such brilliant recordings as 'Hey Bulldog' is about to get a whole lot easier, and that's cause for celebration, indeed."

Perhaps something else regarding The Beatles will also be announced on 9-9-09?

Pfffbbbttt! The Beatles. GET A HAIRCUT!!!

(that was for anyone over 40)

Aug 18, 09 - 12:27 am Comment from: Deus Ex Technica

Nice catch, MDN. Hopefully all the stars will finally be lined up for this, especially since EMI has been more amenable to the digital world lately.

Aug 18, 09 - 12:59 am Comment from: lurker

Since Paul is a contemporary of the current MediCare generation, we probably wore our hair that way at one time or another. What we didn't do is shave our heads.

Aug 18, 09 - 01:05 am Comment from: m159

Way to move Apple Corps.

You're just in time to reach the last surviving Beatles fans, who mostly quit caring about two years ago.

Aug 18, 09 - 01:17 am Comment from: Brau

So this is why Apple's making a tablet ... so you can play DJ, remix and spin your own virtual discs. It all makes sense now.

Hey, hey hey heyyyy, J-J-J-Jude

Aug 18, 09 - 01:17 am Comment from: Priused

Will we see iTunes 9 at this event? I predict that we will.

Aug 18, 09 - 01:20 am Comment from: iWill

Hmm.. this sounds like some kinda 'cocktail' that EMI is mixin' up.

Aug 18, 09 - 01:24 am Comment from: An Optimist

Number nine... number nine...

Aug 18, 09 - 01:38 am Comment from: Quad Core

What is the big deal about the Beatles on iTunes?? If you really want them on the iPod, haven't you already ripped it from a CD? People used iPods BEFORE there ever was an iTunes Store.

Aug 18, 09 - 01:51 am Comment from: neo

The tablet is a dumb concept. Why is this even a rumor to begin with? It failed five years ago! No one wants one. If anything the tablet is the iPhone! For the freak who started this rumor should be shot. I am so sick to of hearing about the Apple Tablet for the last 2 years. Get over it! Its not going to happen. Hell would have to freeze over for Apple to pick up the dumbest concept on the planet. If Bill Gates things its cool, you know to run the other direction.

Aug 18, 09 - 01:53 am Comment from: R2

Still with this Beatles crap?

Most of the people old enough to care about the Beatles are afraid of computers.

Aug 18, 09 - 02:19 am Comment from: columbus

How about 3.1 for the iPhone so we can get MMS from AT&T;?

Aug 18, 09 - 02:41 am Comment from: auramac

There are many people, old and young, who care about the Beatles. Any self-respecting musician does also. 9 was Lennon's favorite number- because it is the highest single number: #9 Dream. Revolution #9... 9/9/09. it's gonna be good.

Aug 18, 09 - 02:54 am Comment from: Geddy

With music like this, you don't want compessed crud. iTunes rocks but for this stuff it has to be CD ripped.

Aug 18, 09 - 02:56 am Comment from: JPGR

To the Beatles haters out there: It's your own loss--more's the pity.

Aug 18, 09 - 03:06 am Comment from: YoYo

I hope the pricing of the boxed Beatles set will not be outragously hight, otherwise I need to wait 2 weeks for the Chinese copy set for one tenth of the price.

Aug 18, 09 - 03:10 am Comment from: The_Steve

@Geddy -- get a clue. There probably isn't 1 person in 100 that can hear the difference between 256 kbps AAC and uncompressed CD audio. Any "crud" that's audible is probably 16-bit quantization noise that's present on the CD to begin with.

Aug 18, 09 - 04:18 am Comment from: Macdoc

Beatles...BFD....Who Cares??

Aug 18, 09 - 06:22 am Comment from: Get over it!

If the "Beatles" wanted to sell their music on iTunes it would have happened years ago.

Aug 18, 09 - 07:08 am Comment from: bobcb

I'm always saddened by how musically ignorant some people are.

I'm looking very forward to remastered Beatles, fingers crossed.

Aug 18, 09 - 07:13 am Comment from: LordRobin

9/9/9 is 6/6/6 upside down! Could it be... the iPocalypse?!? LOL

Aug 18, 09 - 07:17 am Comment from: Botvinnik

@R2 - "Most of the people old enough to care about the Beatles are afraid of computers."

uh, cowboy, the people old enough to remember the Beatles created computers...including the one you/re presently typing your infantile comments on.

Aug 18, 09 - 07:28 am Comment from: Sammyp

Really?!!?? I don't know how many times i have said this.

Who gives a rats ass about the beatles. Is it really that big of a deal if they are available on iTunes? REALLY??!!??

Whatever!!!

Aug 18, 09 - 07:43 am Comment from: Mike

Why does it matter? "During the week of 4 April 1964, The Beatles held twelve positions on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, including the top five positions. Neither feat has been matched by any other artist to date."

Stick that Rap crap up your butt!

Aug 18, 09 - 08:26 am Comment from: Anonymous©

A number 9 is just an upside 6, and we know what three sixes mean.

Aug 18, 09 - 08:57 am Comment from: SKY LARK

@Sammyp and others

Maybe Apple gives a rats ass about the Beatles.

Maybe Apple think it is really that big of a deal they are available on iTunes.

Heck, with your perspective ... why would they bother putting most of the music on iTunes, inevitably majority of it is old fashioned.

What do you recommend, delete all the stuff from say ... last Friday at midday.

Aug 18, 09 - 08:58 am Comment from: Pop

So should I wait to buy my mac book or buy it now?

Aug 18, 09 - 09:28 am Comment from: KingMel

I consider this to be a pretty big deal. After all, Apple Inc. (formerly Apple Computer Inc.) and Apple Corps have not been on friendly terms for a couple of decades. And this release also represents a major shift in attitude by Apple Corps regarding digital distribution. Finally, the Beatles also made some good music and carved themselves a big niche in music history.

You can scoff at the Beatles if you like. But those are the facts.

Aug 18, 09 - 09:32 am Comment from: solid

@Pop. I'd wait a couple weeks to buy your MacBook so that Snow Leopard will come preloaded on it.

@ LordRobin,

"9/9/9 is 6/6/6 upside down! Could it be... the iPocalypse?!?"

Only in Australia and New Zealand.

So MDN, is "that an invitation to make a reservation",
while in Redmond the fool on the hill "sees the sun going down"?

Aug 18, 09 - 09:48 am Comment from: TowerTone

and BTW, what does a fishing magazine have to do with the Beatles?...

Aug 18, 09 - 09:48 am Comment from: qka

Nothing against the Beatles, but their time has come and gone concerning the ITunes Store.

Aug 18, 09 - 09:53 am Comment from: ChrisM

If there is a connection, I bet the title of the Apple invitation will allude to it. Also, this would be a perfect opportunity to showcase the new "cocktail" features that have been rumored. What better way to show it off than with brand new Beatles stuff.... artwork, liner notes, movies, etc... This makes alot of sense...

Aug 18, 09 - 10:49 am Comment from: iPhoner

I'm just hoping that the iTunes App organization is true. Yes - then my life shall be complete.

Aug 18, 09 - 12:00 pm Comment from: Spark

The Beatles catalog is set to be released first on the Zune Marketplace. I hear that Yoko inked the deal while Paul and Ringo were out back having a smoke.

Aug 18, 09 - 12:26 pm Comment from: BC Kelly

Yea, couple of you others out there can hear this too ...

" ... highest fidelity the catalog has seen since its original release"

Doubt many have Acoustic Enhancement and Amplification System able to detect the difference

Or the Ears

Ok, here's a potential PhD Thesis for someone, I probably won't use it so consider it "Open Source"

The Beatles Fame was due to JFK's Assassination

Got that ?

In the wake of Nov 1963, the Nation was in a Serious Funk, made 9-11 look like a Picnic

The Telstar Satellite had recently come online to provide the first major step in Instant Global Village Communications, and Ed Sullivan/Paley/CBS took advantage of it to introduce us to the Singing Nun between Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was inspiring, and very reflective since few understood the French words she was singing, and sold a LOT of Records going into Winter of 1964.

But our Popular Culture wanted Icons who could not be taken away from us so easily - a Sinatra, Elvis, or even JFK were all just Solo Acts. And old age, The Draft, or a Bullet could remove any "single act" from the TV Media Juggernaut that was rising to what we now have in this Post Modern Age.

So, what about a Group? And a Group who was basically playing the non-offensive Early Motown/Soul Music already established in USA but not heard outside of Selected Demographics. Yes, Early Beatles was merely regurgitated pop-schlock from America they'd been listening to in Europe for several years, well known. And, American Popular Music, following the Rise of Rock and Roll earlier in the 50s had run out of gas into the 60s following the Payola Scandals, Jerry Lee's Marriage, and the Majority Culture's xenophobia of Racially Integrated Music, along with other forms of Integration as well.

And, if someone tries to "take away" one member of a "group" then at least the others will still be around.

Dovetails with the Rise of The Corporation in America at the same time - Man in Gray Flannel Suit, etc. And think some Cable TV Series set in that time is out now, and very popular. Forget the name, but NY Times had recent article about it.

Anyway, all the stars were in alignment. The American Pop Culture Machine had to be fed, and Sullivan, along with Cousin Brucie Morrow (and Cronkite, as it turns out, gets some credit too) saw the Insanely Great Opportunity™ to strike while the iron was hot.

And the iron couldn't have been much hotter than it was in Dec of 1963 going into Winter 1964.

Ok, ok ... perhaps not very elegantly written, sorry, don't have all day for this one story.

But hope you get the idea ... wink

@ BC Kelly--

Are you thinking of Mad Men?

I haven't seen it before, but I think that's probably what you're alluding to.

Could DWJ's comment have been a nod, instead of a jab?

Aug 18, 09 - 03:14 pm Comment from: lantzn

What's with all these upside down 9s as 666 comments? What a bunch of pessimists. If you're going to twist a 9 into a 6, just think of 69, it's much more fun and positive.

Aug 18, 09 - 03:24 pm Comment from: PXT

Oh yeah, the Beatles. I'd forgotten about them.

I liked a lot of their songs but, out of iTunes, out of mind.

Aug 18, 09 - 04:30 pm Comment from: Randy

Wow, quite a lot of aggro for a group that has not been together for 40 years. For those musical illiterati among you, pleas know that the last time the Beatles catalogue was remastered was in 1985 and the CDs sound like *ss. The new remasters should sound amazing. Probably even better than the Stones remastering from a few years back. Sadly, the Beatles will not be on SACD.

Aug 18, 09 - 05:12 pm Comment from: The Other Steve•

@ columbus
You don't need an iPhone update to get MMS to work, you need an AT&T;update. You know, like Verizon or something.

999 is just the price of the original Apple computer (upside down) wink

Aug 18, 09 - 06:15 pm Comment from: Kalo

The Beatles are great. Wondering what the big deal is with The Beatles in iTunes... It's like a supermarket that has never sold milk or potato chips. A basic product is missing.

Aug 18, 09 - 08:38 pm Comment from: BC Kelly

Kalo ... ask Michael Jackson ... well, then again

Last I knew he was the one who "owned" their Library, no idea now, maybe he did sell ?

But that's why not online anywhere legal ... no "digital rights"

Yet ...
