Report: Apple iPhone 3G coming to Wal-Mart, select Sam’s Club stores on December 28th
Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 12:01 PM EST

"It looks like Wal-Mart will indeed begin selling the iPhone 3G on December 28th in select locations only. When all is said and done, about 2,500 locations will offer the iPhone 3G. Some stores will also be getting live demo units to display just like Best Buy Mobile," Zach Epstein reports for The Boy Genius Report.

"What’s more, we’re also now getting word that 69 Sam’s Club locations (locations that use the Wal-Mart ordering system, not the Radio Shack ordering system) will offer the handset as well - also beginning on the 28th. As Sam’s Club is a division of Wal-Mart, this certainly makes sense," Epstein reports.

Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune, "The deal, if confirmed, would represent the fourth major expansion of the iPhone’s retail presence outside Apple’s own 200-plus stores — first to AT&T’s 2,000 retail outlets, then to nearly 1,000 Best Bu outlets, and then to the tens of thousands of points of sale (many of them no more than mom-and-pop kiosks) that carry iPhones for Apple’s overseas partners."

ugh I just felt a little gross holding my iPhone while reading this. Are flea markets next?

Nov 19, 08 - 12:17 pm Comment from: Jake

Yuck, I just felt a little gross for posting on the same website as "BT". Unlike BT, I am not a snob SOB.

As long as Apple does not start selling the iPhone in the bottom dwelling AT&T;dealer locations.

Nov 19, 08 - 12:30 pm Comment from: Cascadians

I'm hoping January 5 sees an iTablet or at least a new iPhone. Until then I won't chomp even though tempted. If, however, I were out and about a lot I would have already bought the iPhone 3G.

Nov 19, 08 - 12:30 pm Comment from: Eric24601

that's next. iPhones will be ubiquitous!

Wal-Mart is evil. check out the Wal-Mart documentary "Wal-Mart: The High Price of Low Cost" at http://www.walmartmovie.com

Nov 19, 08 - 01:17 pm Comment from: FUDsucker Proxy

I hear you MacBill, I've been boycotting Wal-Mart for years.

Funny... I just realized that I feel the same way about Microsoft as I do W-M! Rock bottom of the barrel!

Nov 19, 08 - 01:34 pm Comment from: BT

Sorry Jake, not a snob SOB (aren't there TOS against calling other posters SOB??), just have ethical problems with Wal-Mart. Maybe you would too, if you educated yourself on the subject.

I also expect Apple products to be accompanied by a higher end retail and customer service experience than that associated with Wal-Mart.

Nov 19, 08 - 02:01 pm Comment from: deepdish

I don't care where Apple sells iPhones as long as the quality stays where it is at. I don't imagine Apple allowing much variation in pricing between outlets. So it the cost is the same, I go to the Apple store.

But there is only one Apple store in a 200 mile circumference where I live. Before it opened, where was I suppose to go to get an iPhone. If Wallymart had them, I would go there is a second.

There are a lot of places in this country where a Apple store is still a long drive.

Nov 19, 08 - 02:23 pm Comment from: BT

Agreed deepdish if Apple stores were the only ones selling the iphone. However, AT&T;company stores have been selling them since day 1 and they are quite plentiful and do provide a good customer service experience in their store, at least from my experiences.

Now that Best Buy is in the arena, I can't see any reason for Wal-Mart to be selling the iphone.

Nov 19, 08 - 02:48 pm Comment from: Predrag

you gave us a quiz, deepdish, didn't you? 200 mile circumference, that would be how many miles in radius? Let's see:

c = 2π xr

thus200 = 2π x r

therefore r = 200 / 6.28 = 31.8 miles

So, what you are saying is, your Apple store is within 32 mile radius? Under normal conditions, shouldn't that be just a bit over 1/2 hour ride?

Nov 19, 08 - 03:04 pm Comment from: deepdish

dang,

you guys are right.

I think I mean 200 mile radius?

Looking for the term that means no Apple store within a 200 mile drive of me.

And yes, ATT stores sell iPhones. But going to an ATT store is like going to a Dell store. Yawn. At least at Wallymart I get greeted by an old fart and get to look at nascar tatoos on over weight people. There is a certain amount of entertainment value in that alone.

Nov 19, 08 - 03:10 pm Comment from: 84 Mac Guy

Seeing the iPhone on display in a Walmart store will be like seeing a shiny diamond laying in a mound of dog crap.

Nov 19, 08 - 03:20 pm Comment from: Predrag

After having lived in the US for 17 years, I am looking forward to my first Wal-mart experience. They still haven't been able to build one in Manhattan (big surprise there); even K-Mart only arrived here just a few years ago.

Judging by the testimony of Deepdish, it sure sounds like fun (especially the part about NASCAR tatoos...)!

Nov 19, 08 - 03:25 pm Comment from: See Novak

The release date is clever. Will take advantage of gift cards given by lazy Christmas shoppers like me.

Nov 19, 08 - 03:30 pm Comment from: Ugh.

@Predrag- Kmart is still in business? They're about as useful as Radio Shack.

With regards to Walmart, if you go to one of their "superstores", you won't get the true experience. Find an older store and visit that one instead.

Nov 19, 08 - 03:31 pm Comment from: El Pescador do Mil

I don't care where I can BUY it, I care where I can use it -- and AT&T;ain't happ'nen where I live. Whither Verizon?

Nov 19, 08 - 03:45 pm Comment from: deepdish

Lovin' those "muffin tops" at Walmart!

Something to grab a hold of wink

Nov 19, 08 - 06:31 pm Comment from: today@walmart...

I saw the ipods in their jewelry case! I liked it. be snobs if you like... it's more people with safari.

Nov 20, 08 - 03:11 pm Comment from: TheConfuzed1

Actually, this is fantastic news! Sam's Club has a lifetime satisfaction guarranty--if you are ever dissatisfied with a purchase, for any reason, they will replace the item or refund your purchase.

In other words, if your iPhone ever stops working correctly, this will guarranty its replacement with whatever happens to be the latest model! (Not that I would abuse this.) wink
