Report: Apple iPhone to launch in Mexico in June
Thursday, March 27, 2008 - 04:52 PM EDT

Apple's revolutionary iPhone finally has a launch date in Mexico, according to a source in the company and employees of some Apple Stores in New York and San Francisco, Dalia de la Paz reports for the Spanish-language Mexico City daily El Universal.

Apple iPhone will launch in June officially in Mexico and in other Latin American countries, de la Paz reports.

According to the sources Apple has a deal with the digital telephony service Telcel. The source said it was also possible that iPhone would launch in some South American countries on the same day and month, but did not specify the exact day, de la Paz reports.

El Universal made several phone calls to customer support Apple in the United States since February and, upon requesting an iPhone, some employees have said that it is not possible to sell iPhone to Mexico, but that will be available in June, de la Paz reports.

What a said commentary for the Canucks. Mexico will get the iPhone before Canada. Congrats to our southern friends and my sympathy to our northern buds.

I bet in June Apple will introduce G2 iPhones and have availability in a whole lotta new countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

What a f**cking joke! Mexico gets it before Canada. We are getting boned by our providers here in Canada.

This is a sad day for airlines. So many Mexicans were flying to the U.S. just to get their iPhones... Now that CompUSA has closed shop foreign tech guys are just left with Best Buy (not that good) or Fry's (excellent).

Canada will get the 3G iPhone and decent rates from Telus or Bell, whichever one blinks first.

Fusk that tight fisted Ted Rogers.

Mar 27, 08 - 05:27 pm Comment from: TowerTone

I recommend the Huevos Rancheros with *black* beans and Carta Blanca for an early lunch.

What? Launch, not lunch?

In that case, you will need to drink the water....

Let´s see how well the network handles the iPhone apps.
I´ll bet Mr Carlos Slim will be the richest guy on earth.. (again).
However there are already thousands of iPhones in the country..

----------------------------------------------------

there is a big difference in market size

Billionaire Carlos Slim’s Telmex controls 94 percent of the landlines in the country, charging some of the highest rates on earth.

The situation isn’t much better when it comes to cell phones. Slim’s Telcel has about 80 percent of the market share and upstart Movistar takes much of the rest. (34 million users, some pay 600-700 US for BB phones)

The lack of competition results in rates and pricing plans that seem outrageous compared to the U.S.

iPhonez

Mar 27, 08 - 06:19 pm Comment from: chuy

3G in mexico is used by TELCEL 80% market, (by value) MOVISTAR second largest. They cover most Mexico. TELCEL with most coverage, even on remote rural areas (3G)

Mar 27, 08 - 07:23 pm Comment from: Bulu

This is pretty big, especially considering that Telcel is a subsidiary of América Móvil, which owns mobile networks in Brasil, Colombia, Argentina/Paraguay/Uruguay, Guatemala/Nicaragua/Honduras, Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico/Doninican Republic, Jamaica, Chile… So we may see some of those countries going live along with Mexico

Mar 27, 08 - 08:01 pm Comment from: mossman

@ Big Al

Bell and (currently) Telus cannot host the iPhone because they don't use GSM.

However, there's a rumour Telus is rolling out a GSM network. I hope they do, and get into an iPhone bidding war with Rogers.

Mar 27, 08 - 08:44 pm Comment from: Constable Odo

No way. Illegally crossing the border with iPhone in hand.

Seriously, is there really much of a demand for iPhones in Mexico? Is their economy in good enough shape for large numbers to be buying iPhones? Well, if they got the loot, more power to the iPhone sales.

About the iPhone getting to Mexico before Canada. I saw some article about Canada being too cold for using an iPhone. It was outside of the operating temperature range. Now in sunny Mexico, there wouldn't be such a problem. If you're in Canada, maybe you should consider moving to Mexico.

@John and @Constable Odo

kiss my Gringo a*s

Mexico has the largest growing middle class of the Americas

and we have a huge cell phone market, very few people have land lines, we all love our cell phones, I have personally unlocked over 30 iPhones (not as a business, for friends)

Mar 27, 08 - 09:01 pm Comment from: mossman

@Constable Odo:

Alaska is further north than where most people in Canada live, but it has iPhone:

http://www.aksuperstation.com/news/local/12309316.html

And where I live, during the summer it can reach mid-to-high 30s (degrees Celsius of course; ~100°F), so it's not like it's cold *all* the time.

On another thread 84MacGuy expressed an idea of mobbing Rogers with pitchforks.

Thing is — revolting against an oppressor, could happen in America. In Canada, not so much.

Mar 28, 08 - 08:29 am Comment from: Danger McBain

WTF I think we have more spending money in Canada....FYI Rogers you suck

Mar 30, 08 - 10:18 pm Comment from: Heberforever

Saludos

Mar 31, 08 - 10:42 am Comment from: Spock

Canadians: Boycott Rogers! It is pathetic that Mexico gets this before Canada. Rogers deserves to be punished.

Don't subscribe to any additional services from Rogers. Hit them in the bottom line. Jam the customer service lines complaining about this.

Apr 07, 08 - 10:06 pm Comment from: Recessive Gene

What will happen to the already unlocked iPhones in México? Meaning, if I want to use the service 'right', do I HAVE TO buy another, or use the one I already have, just exchange the chip, maybe?
