Report: Apple’s next-gen ‘magnesium-aluminum’ iMac to include new cooling module
Monday, December 29, 2008 - 09:31 AM EST

"A new family of iMacs due early next year may include a more sophisticated cooling system, hints the latest reports from sources close to the company's Taiwanese manufacturing facilities," Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider.

"Backtracking on its report from last week, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News now claims that it's Foxconn, not Quanta, who has secured a contract with the Mac maker to manufacturer its new all-in-one desktops," Lane reports.

"In a report published Monday, the paper also identified Foxconn Group's Foxconn Precision Components and Catcher Technology as the duo that will be responsible for stamping out the iMac's new 'magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis,'" Lane reports. "Interestingly, the paper also reported that Foxconn Precision Components and Auras Technology would team to supply 'the PC's cooling module.' Further details were not provided, and therefore its unclear if the report indicates a change to the iMac's traditional fan-based cooling system."

Dec 29, 08 - 09:59 am Comment from: Glossy Screens Suck

Too bad you can't see what you're working on, unless you turn out the lights.

Dec 29, 08 - 10:07 am Comment from: Deranged

It's an information leak about a future radiator leak. ha Had enough of those on my dad's old Buick.
Must be a processor/graphics card bump bigtime to include an expensive, sophisicated cooling system in such a small space.

I think Apple needs to focus there energy on displays. If they don't use LED's in the new iMac, I hope they fix the uneven backlighting (left to right) on the 24" iMacs and poor viewing angles on the 20".

Also, lets hope they stop using LG displays which have been nothing but problems... Gradient displays!

I would pay a premium of 200 to 300$ extra if they put an LED display...

Dec 29, 08 - 10:46 am Comment from: Marc G

I've been using a glossy display for 18 months and do not have the uneven backlighting issue. Also, there is only about an hour each day where glare really bothers me and I am usually at school during that hour. It'll be interesting to see what they come out with next.

I want carbon fiber liquid nitrogen cooled Cases with CPUs running at 5GHz and beyond.

Dec 29, 08 - 11:08 am Comment from: Scott

eMax, that is ridiculous to think you'll get that.

Maybe 4 GHz, but not 5. wink

RE :: Marc G

It seems the gradient displays was first noticed when the silver/black iMac was announced. They fixed the issue. In mid 2008 it came back. I think Apple lost the ball on its QC. I have been through countless iMacs with gradient/uneven backlighting displays.

Two managers at two different Apple stores told me this is a known issue! Lovely! Why Apple hasn't done anything about it beats me. I bought the 20" iMac which has poor viewing angles. I am thinking of getting the 24" again and just keep replacing the LCD till I am satisfied. Cost Apple a few bucks and hopefully the next round of computers, Apple will take care of the issue... Costing a company money due to poor quality control makes them turn a notch up in the future models smile

They charge a premium already, might as well give us a premium product... Right?

Dec 29, 08 - 12:11 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

I hope they do something because I've had a great deal of problems out of these machines and it always seems to be temperature related.

Yea me too, returned mine and got a matte screen MacBook off eBay.

Way to totally misrepresent what someone said through quoting.

You turned a post where someone says the *don't* have a problem with screen glare into something to support your belief that it *is* a problem.

It's also a completely off-topic troll-post. Just posting to hear yourself talk????

Dec 29, 08 - 05:14 pm Comment from: Basically Machevelian Apple PR admission of iMacs

iMacs are renown for their prehistoric notoriously ABYSMAL design (such as heat thermodynamics eg monitor closeness to other heat emmitting hardware) and technology - "my little HDD cookers" as they are "affectionately" known in the cutting edge PCs *world* ( as opposed to the dead fashion fad of the long gone decade that taste forgot practically exctinct "existence" of the iMac :D :D :D )

The only reason for their manufacture is to cream the objectivity braindead crApple fanatics who STILL buy such SH!T hardware considering what is on offer from the quality sector of the PC market nowadays smile

@BMAPRAI

My 24" iMac (purchased Nov 2007) is fine - wonderful, in fact. The display is incredible. The operating system is stable and has been gradually enhanced via dot releases. I do believe that Apple should boost the basic HDD from 320GB to at least 500GB and, preferably 750GB. I also believe that the Mighty Mouse design is flawed, with poor ergonomics and a trackball that is prone to gumming up, but is not readily accessible for cleaning.

The iMac does put out some heat, I'll admit. But I haven't had any problems so far, and the thermal dissipation system seems to transfer most of it to the air blowing out of the upper slot.

You make it sound as if the iMac design is as poor as your grammar and spelling. That is not the case.

Dec 29, 08 - 08:55 pm Comment from: KingMel

@BMAPRAI

I saw a Windows PC ripoff of the iMac at Fry's and I was singularly unimpressed. Its main selling point was a touch screen, and even my teenage son said that was a stupid idea. Who would want to hold their arms stretched out to manipulate stuff on a vertical display?
