Report: Apple to release Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard as early as end of March
Monday, February 19, 2007 - 02:42 PM EST

"Apple Inc. is set to release its Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard as early as the end of March, according to sources," FinancialWire reports.

FinancialWire reports, "The operating system is touted as an answer to Microsoft's Vista, which was introduced on January 30."

MacDailyNews Note: Puleeze. Leopard most certainly is not being touted as such by anyone who knows anything at all.

FinancialWire continues, "Apple's OS X for MacIntosh PC's was not expected until later in 2007, but development of the system is moving faster than anticipated."

Full article here.

MacDailyNews Note: Apple's official line has never wavered and remains "scheduled to ship in spring 2007."

MacDailyNews Take: Leopard "touted as an answer to Microsoft's Vista!" Sheesh, we'll be laughing at that one for awhile!

Just curious... I haven't been following the Vista feature set much since it began to be eviscerated... Are there any useful features in Vista that aren't in Tiger? And if so, are they in Leopard?

Corection: Vista is MS answer to Panther.

day late, dollar short, as usual

Feb 19, 07 - 03:01 pm Comment from: MegaMe

I am sick and tired of hearing people say Vista is equal to Tiger, let alone Leopard or even Panther.

Vista/Longhorn over promised, under delivered and is a mess until SP1 comes out.

Maybe Vista would be equal to Tiger if all the over promised featers actually made it in the final version and they actually worked.

Feb 19, 07 - 03:02 pm Comment from: msr

I hope it comes out in March. That would be really cool. I'm excited to see if there are any features we haven't been told about.

With XP being Microsoft's answer to OS 8, and with Vista being merely a glossy update to XP, I'm going to peg Vista as Microsoft's answer to OS 9. Hell, I'll even give 'em OS 9.2.2.

Feb 19, 07 - 03:22 pm Comment from: Emil

Vista's Explorer is way better than the finder. but then again so is the one in XP so that's no reason to upgradet o Vista. It is probably a better indicator of how much the finder sucks :(

Feb 19, 07 - 03:31 pm Comment from: jeff

justified --

XP was vastly superior to OS 8 or even OS 9. The functionality and expandibility of XP far superceded 8 and 9. All three were vulnerable to viruses, so security is even.

XP vs the MacOSX versions is a completely different story.

Vista is tainted as an answer to XP sounds more poetic I think.

Even ? .... Hardly !!

Do the numbers ... As I recall .. (and if Im wrong, here, Im sure someone more astute in this area will correct me) .. there were something like ... 60 to 65 virii (total) which affected the classic Macs ...
What about WinDoze ?? ... wasnt it something like 1800 ?

I wouldnt call that "even" !

"Vista's Explorer is way better than the finder."

I agree. The OS X version of the finder is the one of the weakest areas in the OS. I was much happier with the Finder in OS 9. I've gotten used to OS X, but I don't "love" it.

Feb 19, 07 - 03:40 pm Comment from: Finder v. Explorer

(@Emil)
How is Explorer better than Finder? Lately, I've had to use XP a fair amount and find Explorer much less intuitive than Finder. Maybe I've just gotten used to Finder, but I find I can do anything I want with Finder just by applying its general principles to something new. Whereas Explorer seems much more restricted and I have to discover exactly how to do whatever it is I want to do.
Am I missing something?

Feb 19, 07 - 03:52 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

Vista amounted to Microsoft's answer to Tiger. When it was still Longhorn, it was MS' answer to Panther, but ... times change. So, since Tiger was the Mac OS when Vista was released, Tiger is what's being "answered". Still, it isn't a really GOOD answer. If it were, then Leopard might be considered an "answer to Vista", but Vista isn't even selling credibly well. Else why the complaints about Piracy?
Vista caught the glamor of Tiger, et al. It also managed to hold on to some of the features that cause Tiger to stand head and shoulders above XP - but not many of them. Worse - for current owners - is that most who would upgrade the OS will also have to upgrade the hardware, to something costing nearly as much as a Mac. Why not go the whole way? Get a half-price 3-year-old refurb that will easily run Leopard ... for less. Yeah ... a 3-year-old PC is worth ... nothing? ... while a 3-year-old Mac is just catching its second wind.

> The operating system is touted as an answer to Microsoft's Vista...

That can be accurate in a way. If Leopard is the "answer" to Vista (the question), it goes something like this.

Question: How do fix the mess I've made buy upgrading to Vista?
Answer: Get a Mac with Leopard.

I thought OSX (10.1) was amazing, compared to ballmas and gates offering.
Vista isnt trying to compete with Mac OS, merely copy it, and rely on the consumers Stupidity and ignorance to think its acceptable. People arn't as un-informed as they were in 1995. I hope the minute-flaccid people.. have there true colours revealed, It isnt that I think much of computers, its more that It is very comfortable and safe in the world of OSX

Feb 19, 07 - 04:21 pm Comment from: john

No, Leopard doesn't have to answer to anything especially Vista which doesn't do any better than OSX beta. Leopard will be at a much higher level than anything Microsoft could ever think of let alone do.

Feb 19, 07 - 04:33 pm Comment from: Steve Ballmer

Apple answered Microsoft Windows Vista 5 years ago.

Feb 19, 07 - 04:46 pm Comment from: @Jake

No, you aren't missing anything. The Finder is about a gazillion times more intuitive than Explorer in my opinion. I hate that one can navigate virtually nothing in Windows via keyboard shortcuts. Oh, I know they're there for some things, but they are a pain in the arse compared to the Mac. I've used some of them so long in the Mac OS I don't remember where the actual menu commands are anymore! lol! I could see where if one was accustomed to using the mouse for file navigation, Exlporer might have something to offer. As for me though, that's one of the reasons I prefer the Mac OS--I am used to very speedy computing that doesn't require me to be shackled to the mouse. Throw in Spotlight and Widgets and my mouse is getting mighty lonesome. If we are indeed headed in the direction of totally intuitive touch screen navigation you can call me happy. I fully expect Apple to just utterly and completely dust the ass of Windpws and computing as we know it over the next decade, yet again. And before anyone starts yammering, I know that Apple doesn't necessarily develop the technologies, but they are better than anyone else at putting them together in a way that makes sense, that's for sure.

Feb 19, 07 - 04:51 pm Comment from: TowerTone

Vista was the answer?
What was the question?

Feb 19, 07 - 05:02 pm Comment from: DistantThunder

@@Jake: I don't want to be the PC apologist (I prefer Macs), but Windows is just as navigable via the keyboard as OS X is, if not more so. There are keyboard shortcuts for EVERYTHING in Windows. (Of course, to some people that is called "bloat," not "features.") The Mac is slightly handicapped in this area, although by turning on various accessibility options it is possible to gain much of the same functionality.

Back to the topic, I hope Leopard is released soon. I am aiming to purchase a MacBook Pro shortly after the release of both Leopard and Adobe CS3. I can hardly wait....

Feb 19, 07 - 05:28 pm Comment from: Beeblebrox

I don't use XP much but where in the Explorer, is the UNIX style column navigation option? All I ever see is icons or nested lists. Without column navigation, XP is no where close to the Mac OS Finder. Furthermore, the Dock is really part of the OS navigation system and again, XP has no comparable functionality.

Not to get into a war over features but really, the Finder, with all its shortcomings, is eminently easier to use than Explorer..

Wouldn't surprise me if they hold it all back 'till WWDC.

Not a chance. When you tell hundreds of engineers that they've got until June to ship something, they'll take as much time as you've given them. We had the same silly rumor about Puma, Jaguar, and Tiger.

Has anyone tried Vista? Wow, I cannot believe how bloated it seems. And inconsistent. And just so very wierd. Click on the START button and one of the choices that shows up is "Experiences." This is Microsoft's way of referring to documents/pictures/videos/etc. -- "experiences."

Very, VERY strange.

Microsoft is getting really bizarro on us.

Those pre-OS X Mac viruses were nearly as dead in the water as any attempt is now at infecting an OS X machine, and for the same reason. It was too difficult to get them to do anything. Most of them, probably more than half, were pre-web, anyway. They could propogate only through floppies — or by MacAddict that distributed a virus when one of their CDs was infected.

I've been running pre-OS X since 1991 (9 and OS X since 10.2) and have yet to run across a virus. And, of course, 9 is safer than ever with each passing decade. Think how safe it'll be in 100 years!

It's true, you practically have to beg Explorer to let you see a folder tree...

Three or so clicks to get a decent layout of the file structure and even then it doesn't stick.

Leopard is Apple's inspiration for Microsoft's mediocracy, no matter what MS does.

Explorer fans, use the Search field in the Finder instead of Spotlight... oops... I mean, use the Spotlight IN the Finder!!

Feb 20, 07 - 05:00 am Comment from: MacSmiley

Forgot to say this.

When Ballmer spouted off about how Vista was going to address the user experience, I had no idea they were just going to address the experience by moving into the Start button's previous residence !!
LOL

The only person I know who got Vista was the Epson Rep I met this weekend at BestBuy. She got Vista to install on her mother's PC. She said it was so bad, she returned Vista and reinstalled XP (I was going to say worked so badly, but what she described didn't qualify as work of any kind.) Meanwhile, her husband has been "hanging out a lot" at the local Mac reseller's store.

Wouldn't that be interesting to hear her tell a customer thinking about buying a PC.

FinancialWire...

Just what we need, yet another jaded financial news service.

I swear, MS has pretty much got the entire business world into this merky mediocrity which says something like, "...if it isn't mediocre, its not meant for business, its meant for creative types..." You will never convince me that the most successful business types go where they are without incredible creativity.

But this has nothing to do with the FinancialWire "report" you say...? Take another sniff, the mediocrity is in there and its being pushed hard. I would argure that its really the whole point of the "report". The business world, except for those that have really made it, is so desparate to dumb the Mac down to the Windows level its down-right laughable sometimes.

I worked with computers since I was old enough to use them. The first Operating Systems I starting working with were Windows 95 and OS 7 (16/32-bit), but I have went back to both companies history and through all there operating systems. Instead of thinking that each OS is an anwser to each other; think of the fact of software miagration to hardware to meet consumer demands. Apple has a more select demographic with there one of a kind computer company with there own Operating Systems. They are great in terms of supporting some of the newest hardware, security, simplicity, and graphic arts. Microsoft however appeals to a more broader demographic entailing many computer hardware companies, businesses, schools, home users, and almost anything else. Microsoft's Operating System design is more friendly to edits, modifications, hardware, and is cheaper in it's many forms of variety to meet the customers needs. You have to remember these companies are in it for the profits and meeting demand. You can compare Apple to Microsoft but, keep in mind that there are many differential factors. Windows XP and Vista -32&64;bit editions = OS 10.4-5 are the anwser to 64-bit processors, 3D OS, higher level of security, etc. and with both brands comes updates. Personally get a computer that suits your needs/ works well; instead of a computer which is better or has more bells & whistles. Personally I choose Windows for being more supportive and open minded to customer, being able to adapt so well to the market at a more affordable price then Macs. However I support both and like what they have been able to produce. Currently I use Windows XP PRO and it runs great with it totally updated and secure, but I making the move to Windows Vista Ultimate Edition with my 30GB Ipod (lol). I hope OS 10.5 and Windows Vista do well to meet consumer needs.
