Report: AT&T passes 1 million iPhone activations milestone

“ATT Mobility has fulfilled over 1 million iPhone activations since the device was launched in the US on June 29th. This news comes from a full-time staffer in ATT Mobilty’s Commerce Group who chose to remain anonymous. Wall Street analysists have placed initial iPhone sales between 500,000 – 750,000 units. First week sales of over 1 million would cement the iPhone as Apple’s fastest selling new product, and one of the hottest new technology gadgets in history,” waitingforiphone.com reports.

  1. Now wait a minute……Didn’t the other genius say that 1 million phones in less than a week is some kind of crappy sales rate or something? I think the term was that Apple missed its mark.

This is good news for Apple. If they can only miss the mark like this every week of the year.

    Just my $0.02

  2. It would be hard to overstate the importance of this news, if true. Also, if it is true, we can expect an official announcement from Apple/AT&T shortly.

Despite the best efforts of the FUD-mongers, I am impressed by the rarity of reports of serious problems, or disappointments, with the iPhone. If there are a million or more of these puppies out there, the relative lack of complaints is pretty amazing. Also, it helps explain the breakdowns at AT&T (altho they really should have been better prepared for this).

I am loving my iPhone. If there were any to be had at the local Apple or AT&T stores, I get another for my business partner.

  3. Though this could be true, it is not really a report, it is a RUMOR…

“….This news comes from a full-time staffer in ATT Mobilty’s Commerce Group who chose to remain anonymous.”

When an official named source releases this info it can be called a “report,” until then this is just a RUMOR.

  4. If true, that’s not the quantity shipped to retailers (hello, Redmond), it’s quantity sold, unboxed and activated. There are probably tens of thousands more that are already purchased but not yet activated.

And there are probably another five million more (like me) waiting a few more months until Rev 1 is ready and their current cell phone is closer to death. Gotta love it.

  5. @marko
Steve Ballmer must be really upset he was wrong.
Oh wait, he’s wrong most of the time.
His claim to fame was landing the best dorm room assignment ever.

I’m really interested in what you think Ballmar “got wrong”… If I remember correctly he said it “may sell very well”… In another interview, he predicted the iPhone would take 2-3% of the market (which is triple of what Jobs predicted)… I believe he said:

“They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I’d prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get.”

Seems to me that the more phone sold, the more correct Ballmar is and the less correct Jobs is…

But hey, don’t let facts get in the way of you blind hate…

  6. I believe Microsoft is now very worried about there future postion. I would be, one million phones and counting. How do tell web designers that Microsoft is your prefered choice? Safari is going to make a change in the industry now!

I still like to the numbers for Safari!!

    From my iPhone

  7. … this link was sent to ballmers box …I hear. That’s ballmer with a little ‘b’. ballmer was flat on his back after reading this and wouldn’t get up for anybody or anything. All of Redmond has been sending sympathy and encouraging words but ballmer won’t get up ..he says he’s had the pole shift foretold in the Mayan calendar …yeah, the 600 dollar pole shift, fully subsidized without a keypad. He’s a grown man, you know …so sad.

  8. Remember this total doesn’t include even on of those purcased via the apple store. Therefore if you take into account the numbers for people who are happy to wait a week or two rather than travel to an apple store that number could be 50% or more an understatement of quantities sold.

  9. I must admit that I saw no reason to buy the iphone. Then I went to my local Apple store last Saturday and played with it. It is VERY cool and I bought one. Activation took about 5 minutes and I love it.
I had about 12 people down on my boat over the holiday and everyone not only wanted to see it but also wanted to get one.
Great job Apple and as I said…VERY cool.
