Report: Canucks to get more iPhone choice; Bell, Telus to launch Apple’s iconic iPhone next month
Monday, October 05, 2009 - 10:24 PM EDT

"BCE Inc.'s Bell Canada and Telus Corp. will begin selling the iPhone next month, breaking the stranglehold on the iconic device that rival Rogers Communications Inc. has held for more than a year," Simon Avery reports for The Globe and Mail Update.

"The country's two largest incumbent telecom companies, under pressure to re-ignite growth as new wireless competitors begin operations this year, are banking on Apple Inc.'s ground-breaking smart phone to help them sign up bigger-spending customers and shift the balance of power in Canada's mobile market," Avery reports.

"Bell announced Monday that it will launch national service in November on the $1-billion next-generation wireless network it has been building with Telus, months ahead of schedule. The project extends the two companies' existing third-generation (3G) networks to include the same technology standard employed by Rogers, the nation's largest cellphone company," Avery reports. "Until now, Rogers has enjoyed a Canadian monopoly on that standard – and with it, one of the hottest products of the mobile age."

Avery reports, "Neither Bell nor Telus would confirm that they would add the iPhone to their lineups. Apple also declined to comment. But people familiar with the matter said the two carriers would announce a working partnership with Apple as early as Tuesday or Wednesday and begin selling the device in time for the launch of their new network."

Very interesting! However we are talking bell, as they still owe me 700.00 from years ago I'm not buying!

Looks like exclusivity is giving way to multiple vendors in many countries...Maybe there's multiple choices lined up here when ATT's contract expires...?

Oct 05, 09 - 10:57 pm Comment from: qka

@breeze,

Other than T-Mobile, no other US carrier uses GSM. And T-Mobile is considerably smaller than the biggies AT&T;or Verizon. Verizon uses the antiquated CDMA So it seems unlikely that AT&T;will get any competition in the US soon.

Bell is worse than Rogers so there wouldn't be a whole lot of benefit to consumers... Telus, not sure.

Such competition would be good, but I'll believe it when I see it. I went with Fido; they're owned by Rogers and it's still a 3-year contract, true, but with their per-second billing, no access fee, and free evenings/weekends starting at 7 instead of 9, at least I'm not being completely screwed.

Bell and Telus use the CDMA network in Canada?

@qka:
Verizon's gotta be angling somehow ...?

Rogers, Bell & Telus? Not sure what it means for Canadians, but it does bode well as a precedent for those in the US hoping to see Apple break away from AT&T;.

Oct 05, 09 - 11:52 pm Comment from: Regular Reader

Now are they going to give us decent data plans? Or do we have more choices of who we'd like gouging our wallets?

Oct 06, 09 - 12:44 am Comment from: GRANDxADMIRAL

Every friggin' person in Canada is gonna have an iPhone. Good news, canadian developers :D

Oct 06, 09 - 01:50 am Comment from: CandTsmac

I still don't get it. I live in Canada and work in the tech sector. As far as I know/have always known, Rogers/Fido are the only cell company using GSM/SIMM Card phones. Bell and Telus use phones using the CDMA standard?

Is this not related to the speed of the network and not the tech working on the backbone (GSM vs CDMA)?

Any help here?

Oct 06, 09 - 02:04 am Comment from: Jeff

Doesn't matter Rogers has exclusive deal and they cant get any phones so how are the others going to get phones.

The question is: will any of the carriers provide and advertisement-free option, given that ads have started to appear in the U.S.. The last thing I want on my personal device is someone else making noise at my expense. I pay for product and service, not to provide a vehicle for others to tout their wares.

Bell and Telus have deployed a 4G network, mostly in the cities and towns of Canada and along the major highways that connect them. In that respect they are just like Rogers. This 4G network will work with the 3G and 3GS iPhones and with the 4G iPhone when it hits the market.

As a Canadian, I can only say, WE WIN!

I've been a Telus Mobility customer for over 20 years and I have never had a problem with their customer service.

Apple has never been happy with Rogers. Look for unlimited data and 2 year contracts from Bell and Telus. It's what Apple wants and both Bell and Telus wanted the iPhone bad enough to agree to conditions like that.

WE WIN!

@ Jeff,

There is a reason Rogers can't get product from Apple.

Bell and Telus.

WE WIN!

Apple didn't give Rogers exclusive rights because Rogers wouldn't agree to their terms (unlimited data etc.). Rogers said "uh-huh... we're the only game in town, Jobs."

HSPA networks can be layered on CDMA OR GSM networks... the iPHone supports HSPA+... or is it LTE? I don't know... the point is... it doesn't matter if it's GSM or CDMA if the phone supports the newer high speed protocols... which the 3G and 3GS do.
