Report: Foxconn to ship 3 million 3G Apple iPhones in June
Monday, April 28, 2008 - 03:01 PM EST

"Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) has reportedly landed orders for the assembly of second-generation iPhones from Apple supporting 3G, with shipments to begin in June this year, the Chinese-language Commercial Times has quoted sources at foreign institutional investors in Taipei as indicating," Steve Shen reports for DigiTimes.

"The Commercial Times also cited sources at component suppliers as saying they have been instructed by Apple to begin preparing material supplies by the end of May," Shen reports.

"Shipments of the 3G iPhone are expected to top three million units in June with the model likely to ship a total of 24-25 million units throughout its life-cycle, the paper added," Shen reports.

Those excited about 3G in the U.S. should take a look at ATT's list of cities covered here...
http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/

Pretty spotty.

Apr 28, 08 - 02:12 pm Comment from: pkingjack

ATT is busy activating more 3G towers. (grapevine)

Apr 28, 08 - 02:19 pm Comment from: mas

A lot of dark blue in the Boston area. Is it June yet?!!

Apr 28, 08 - 02:22 pm Comment from: Spark

Hope so, but as of now, unless you live in the heart of major cities, or outside the U.S. you won't benefit from 3G. I hope Steve has the ATT chairman on again to update iPhone users on the state of these updates, otherwise the new phone will be of interest primarily to Europeans and Asians where 3G is saturated.

Apr 28, 08 - 02:26 pm Comment from: holding out hope

Spotty is an understatement. For that reason alone I am still hoping that the 3G iphone will be carrier independent. I hate sprint, but at least I can get my "mobile broadband" in and around most cities I travel to. It would be nice to just have to carry my iphone, rather than lug around my MBP to access the internet and answr my email.

Apr 28, 08 - 02:33 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

No 3G at my house, or on most of my commute = for the lose.

Good thing I didn't spend the last 10 months complaining about it.

Apr 28, 08 - 02:34 pm Comment from: bjh

3G won't be the only selling point of these phones. The new software will be a huge benefit...

Apr 28, 08 - 02:37 pm Comment from: R2

AT&T;has a bad habit of failing to update their 3G map. I didn't think I had good coverage in the suburban region of my city but after going on HowardForums.com (a mobile phone website), I found 3G customers in the area who now get pretty strong and consistent signal strength.

Remember AT&T;stepped up their 3G buildout earlier this year and that helped spur the iPhone rumors, so don't be surprised if you end up with coverage that doesn't reflect in the map.

Apr 28, 08 - 02:37 pm Comment from: DJ

Looking forward to iP 2.0 but doubt if O2 will have expanded their 3G much at launch.

3G's generally very spotty in the UK and likely to remain so I'd guess.

So far, it seems to be limited mostly to metro areas and motorway cafes.

Apr 28, 08 - 02:38 pm Comment from: Spark

@bjh
Yeah, but the 2.0 software is supposed to run on existing iPhones. Current owners won't find a compelling need to upgrade their phones to get all that sweet 2.0 goodness.

Apr 28, 08 - 02:40 pm Comment from: John

I'll finally jump for the iPhone when 3G arrives in June.

The more Gigs of Ram, the better.

I would love 64gigs!!! I'll buy if there's 32gigs available.

Goodbye late technology adopter Verizon. Hello, AT&T;!

Apr 28, 08 - 02:40 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Spark

Well, it's only been a year. I'm not sure if Apple will be trying to drive upgrades very hard yet. There are a lot more people out there that don't have iPhones already.

Apr 28, 08 - 02:43 pm Comment from: Omaha

ATT has no 3G coverage in Omaha NE. We have almost 1 million people in the metro area (within 40 miles), and are in the top 50 largest markets (41). I want an 3g iphone, but wonder if I should even bother if it will be no better than the current model for me. I hope there is more to the new iphone than "just" being 3g.

Apr 28, 08 - 02:45 pm Comment from: maroons

i'm sure its backwards compat with edge, yes? or is it?

Apr 28, 08 - 02:46 pm Comment from: Macintosh

Sounds good.

Apr 28, 08 - 02:48 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

I bet you'll see 32 GB. No 3G is a big barrier in Asia and Europe. But the US market is going to want some sort of tangible upgrade, not just "Network Might Be Somewhat Faster Sometimes".

Hi ChrissyOne!

Apr 28, 08 - 02:58 pm Comment from: Martin

Who said that AT&T;has a contract with Apple for a 3G iPhone. If not then Apple can let anyone supply the 3G iPhone.

@ CMD

Hey, where ya been?

Apr 28, 08 - 03:08 pm Comment from: Camel's Milk Drinker

@C1

In hospital!!!

I made the mistake of sleeping with all the windows and doors shut.....I poisoned myself with my own fart!!!

By the time I recovered, business had slipped down the proverbial tube and had to bail out by looking for a buyer. One day Camel's Milk will catch on, shame the boat passed me by...but I have a cunning plan! Camel's Milk Bio-Ethanol!!!! I don't see many people starving if I divert Camels milk to that project...Do you???

Great to be back again, even though it won't be for long.

Apr 28, 08 - 03:18 pm Comment from: R2

maroons,

Yes, mostly all 3G phones use EDGE as a backup and you can definitely expect it with the 2ndGen. iPhone.

Apr 28, 08 - 03:35 pm Comment from: jtc

@John

Uhhh it's gigabytes of storage not RAM

Apr 28, 08 - 03:52 pm Comment from: Predrag

to 'Holding out hope':

I'm sure you know this, but just in case; iPhone will never work with Sprint (or Verizon); they are CDMA. Outside of the US (and a few minor spots elsewhere in the world), mobile telephony runs on GSM. Inside US, that means AT&T;and T-Mobile. If T-Mobile coverage has decent coverage in your area, then the availability for unlocked phone might have a meaning for you. Otherwise, you'll have to look at Nokia N95 or some other sad 'me too' device.

and to Camel's Milk Drinker:

You're lucky to be alive; it has been documented that people died of their own 'exhaust' after eating broccoli and beans and sleeping in a room with doors/windows closed. High concentration of Methane was found in their lungs and blood stream. For those of us growing up in countries where military service is compulsory, it is one of the first things you learn in the army - never close your dorm windows at night, no matter how cold it is outside.

Some of them for Spain please
3G works everywhere just fine
The other day i've seen here in a Supermarket two other guy's with an iphone mailing - of course jailbroken.

Apr 28, 08 - 04:05 pm Comment from: Crabs

@DJ

What? And here I was thinking the Europeans were all high and mighty with their amazing 3G coverage, and limited EDGE. So really, all the rest of the twits there are just making crap up? I'm taking your word for this.

Or maybe you're just wrong? I dunno...

Apr 28, 08 - 04:07 pm Comment from: Camel's Milk Drinker

@ Predrag,

I wish in hindsight I had as wise an instructor as you had! luckily for me I tuck into alot of Acidophilous, Bifidous & L- Casai bacteria which help to break down the concentration level of what would otherwise be a life threatening fart. I also take the precaution of either drinking mint tea or normal tea with mint oil which is deadly to farts......stops them cold in their tracks......not a single peep or wooosh all day long!!!

Apr 28, 08 - 04:12 pm Comment from: Camel's Milk Drinker

@ Crabs, I think DJ is confusing Wimax with 3G. Wimax has a superior coverage as it does not need many relay towers. In the UK it is being introduced gradually via petrol stations as they already have satelitte feed in place. One Wimax dish will cover a radius of thirty miles I believe and best of all they are unobtrusive. I wonder?

Apr 28, 08 - 04:37 pm Comment from: walk away Bill just walk away

AT&T;sure does take it's time, their coverage map doesn't seem to have changed for about 18 months.

Apr 28, 08 - 04:38 pm Comment from: MaLvado

The Austin/San Antonio corridor looks good with coverage, but it's still not a big want for me to have 3G.

Battery life will be interesting...

Apr 28, 08 - 05:18 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ CMD

Biofuels are no good, haven't you heard? I think you should expand you market a bit and move into Asia and Latin Am. What you need is a marketing gimmick, ala California Raisins or The National Egg Council. Create your own mixed drinks with camel's milk (...and a round of White Arabians for my friends...) and hire leggy blondes that look like Fox News anchors to give away samples at bars, sporting events, day care, etc. You'll be back on top in no time.

"AT&T sure does take it's time, their coverage map doesn't seem to have changed for about 18 months."

They've trying to reach their map guy but sadly he lives in western South Dakota.

Apr 28, 08 - 05:21 pm Comment from: 3G

Like some other posters said, the AT&T;Map (http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/) is not up to date. But think of this as the beginning. What do you think is financing the AT&T;3G buildout? My bet is on all the new customer Apple has brought to AT&T;. It will cost AT&T;(and any other carrier, for that matter) billions of dollars to complete a 3G build-out across the country, and there has to be a reason to invest that much. Apple is making a market for this.

For the moment, it probably means that you can't get 3G in the middle of Kansas or Nevada. But if you're in downtown Chicago, New York or LA, you will. And guess where most of the demand will come from? It will simply be a matter of time before coverage expands across the country.

Some people complain. I beg to differ, and am filled with anticipation on what will be. And that day is coming soon.

Apr 28, 08 - 05:23 pm Comment from: Ampar

They've been trying . . .

<sigh>

Apr 28, 08 - 08:22 pm Comment from: Steveeee

3 G is not for the technologically backward USA, it's for the Asians. smile
