Report: Intel’s new 45nm Penryn processors to debut just ahead of Macworld Expo
Wednesday, December 05, 2007 - 10:45 AM EST

"Intel will up the ante again on January 6, 2008 with its new 45nm Penryn-based Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme dual core processors," Brandon Hill blogs for DailyTech.

"It's highly plausible that the chips could make their first appearance at CES 2008 (January 7, 2008) with further unveils at MacWorld 2008 in Apple’s oft-rumored tablet, revamped MacBook Pros or refreshed iMac desktops," Hill reports.

"Apple's current MacBook Pro makes use of the Core 2 Duo T7500, T7700 and T7800 65nm Merom processors which will be phased out in favor of the new [Penryn] T8300, T9300 and T9500. Likewise, the current iMac uses Core 2 Duo T7250, T7700 and Core 2 Extreme X7900 processors which are being replaced by the [Penryn] T8100, T9300 and X9000," Hill reports.

Another example of how Intel and Apple are in cahoots in their marketing strategy to hold back the release of technology until it's time to suck some more money from the bank accounts of their customers who can't stand not to have the latest of anything. We are such suckers!

"It's highly plausible that the chips could make their first appearance... in Apple’s oft-rumored tablet, revamped MacBook Pros or refreshed iMac desktops"

Macworld '08 gonna create even more buzz than Macworld '07.

Dec 05, 07 - 11:13 am Comment from: Loru

Uh...I'm pretty sure that the current macbook Pros use the Santa Rosa Processors, and the previous models used the Merom ones...

Dec 05, 07 - 11:38 am Comment from: KillerX

Loru,

Santa Rosa is the chip set not the processor.

Dec 05, 07 - 11:42 am Comment from: OZZ

@Darth Mac

More than Macworld 07?

That'll be possible only if Steve is about to introduce something more revolutionary than the iPhone...

Let's wait and see...

Dec 05, 07 - 11:45 am Comment from: Georgy Porgy

Great! ...but WHEN will there be a super low power non battery sucking 3G capable Intel processor in the iPhone.
The iPhone is good, but really needs the interface to be snappier...an Intel processor could solve several issues and push the envelope further. 45nanowhatevers could do the trick.

Crap...I just updated both my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro.
Oh well ya gotta dive into the pool sometime.

Dec 05, 07 - 12:04 pm Comment from: MCCFR

And - by this time next year - Santa Rosa will be history having been superseded by Montevina.

Dec 05, 07 - 01:16 pm Comment from: flappo

wild bill - you moron

ahaha

@ OZZ

It's only gonna be possible with the introduction of a revolutionary ultra-portable laptop with mutli-touch + revolutionary keyboard + stylus etc. The kind of thing that will set the new standard for laptops.

To that you can add some updates to the iPhone/iPod Touch and even Apple TV, all available through an upgraded version of iTunes.

Macworld '07 gave a new direction to Apple and technology in general. Macworld '08 will see Apple taking a couple of giant steps in that direction...

Dec 05, 07 - 01:34 pm Comment from: @flappo

There will almost without doubt be a Mac Pro update (I mean, it's been the same since its release!), but no one seems to really care about it since it appeals to such a tiny market and tiny percentage of Mac users.

Dec 05, 07 - 01:36 pm Comment from: M@c

There's gotta be a super-portable laptop coming. My guess would be around a 11-12 inch screen size with iPhone-esque capability built in. That would be cool.

You may be a sucker; I'm not. I'm still using a 2 1/2 year old PowerBook G4. It still kicks any Windows laptop where it hurts.

It's the software, not the processor, that makes a Mac a Mac.

Dec 05, 07 - 02:21 pm Comment from: Darth Mac

You right m@c !!! People have never seen a laptop like the one coming. Apple's gonna kick ass at Macworld '08. You mark my words !!!

Why am I so sure? 'Cause Steve Jobs said himself that the computers that are coming next year are off the chart !!!

Dec 05, 07 - 02:59 pm Comment from: Roberto

@ @flappo,

MacPro may appeal to few Mac users but it's the ONLY Mac in the lineup that I use and give a damn about.

Dec 05, 07 - 04:23 pm Comment from: Is this strange or am I reading this ALL WRONG

X9000 2.8 GHz 44W 6MB $851
T9500 2.6 GHz 35W 6MB $530
T9300 2.5 GHz 35W 6MB $316
T8300 2.4 GHz 35W 3MB $241
T8100 2.1 GHz 35W 3MB $209

The iMac Extreme will get the 851 dollar chip
and the MascBook Pro gets the 530 dollar chip.

Now compare the price of the machines.
iMac Extreme is priced at $2,299.00 as of today AND the
MacBook Pro is $2,799.00.

Considering the cost of the new chips... COULD the MacBook Pro ACTUALLY come down in PRICE? Or will Apple most likely KEEP their PRICING format.

These NEW chips have the SAME amount of L2 Cache (6 Mb) yet the iMacExtreme actually has higher Ghz clock speed. If MegaHertz or GigaHertz matter still... I'd go for the DUO 2.8 - Duh. iMac is a very Portable DEVICE aswell.

THE iMacExtreme has less of a PROFIT margin for APPLE.

Like the iPodNano - I'm tasting a sweet spot and would RECOMMEND the iMacExtreme and it's $500 dollar savings over the MacBookPro. I figure Apple knows this and is beating on more iMacExtreme sales over MacBookPro... but that wasn't what the Market said last year. Laptops are where the sales are.

Any ONE do a COMPARISON of speed between the MAcBookPro vs iMacExtreme?

Bring it on... I got to see this!

Dec 05, 07 - 05:15 pm Comment from: KingMel

The hardware improvements since the Intel switch have been great, but they have generally been more incremental that revolutionary. They have also been frequent enough (unlike the slow motion Motorola/IBM PPC development) that you know another rev is coming relatively soon, but in smaller jumps.

To me, this means buy a new Mac if you need one or really want one. It might be a while, yet, before Mac users can get their hands on that Penryn goodness, and the current crop of Macs is terrific and will be serviceable for a number of years to come.

" MacPro may appeal to few Mac users but it's the ONLY Mac in the lineup that I use and give a damn about."

Damn Skippy. We have at least 28 G5 towers in the office. Over the next year I hope to add at least 20 more towers. I have been wating to see what Apple would do with this platform. And the compliment to that as well, the Cinema Displays and Xserves. Lets see something happen already.

Dec 05, 07 - 09:16 pm Comment from: Spanked

>>Crap...I just updated both my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro.

The Intel update cycle is much faster than Mac users are used to. It comes with the territory. If you buy the latest Mac/Intel offerings, 6-9 months later they will be spanked by a better processor. Don't fret, your machine(s) is more than capable of handling anything you can throw at it.

Dec 06, 07 - 01:37 am Comment from: macK

As much as I want that new shiny Macbook for Christmas, I'm waiting till 1/15... all those rumors, and now this? There's GOT to be something big in January - hopefully macbook sized tongue laugh

Dec 06, 07 - 11:25 pm Comment from: MacSheikh

@ macK

Same here. I've been holding off getting a new Mac/MacBook for months on the hope of seeing something great at MW08.
