Report: Taiwan manufacturer gets contract for lower-cost Apple iPhone
Tuesday, July 17, 2007 - 05:50 PM EST

"Speculation about whether Apple will introduce a cost-down version of its iPhone continues to arise in the Chinese-language media, with a recent report in the Chinese-language Commercial Times newspaper indicating that Taiwan-based Wintek has gained touch screen panel orders from Apple for its second-generation iPhone," Emily Chuang reports for DIGITIMES.

"The report claims that the new iPhone from Apple will begin shipping in September with prices ranging from US$249-299. The paper added that Apple recently visited Wintek to deliver instructions on manufacturing and the company has begun test production in small volumes," Chuang reports.

"Other Chinese-language media reports have listed Quanta Computer as the possible manufacturer of the second-generation device. Quanta has denied that report and Wintek has declined to comment, citing customers confidentiality," Chuang reports.

"A recent Digitimes report noted Quanta, along with Inventec and Foxconn Electronics (the registered trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry) are all bidding for the Asian version of the iPhone, not the Nano version. Quanta has already been awarded some orders for the European version of the iPhone, according to a Goldman Sachs report," Chuang reports.

a little too early for a cheaper version of iphone. the touch screens are probably for a touch-screen version of iPod, especially at that price range.

Don't forget, the first generation iphones will command an ever increasing price just as the first imac, cube, anglepoise imac, The less made, the greater the value they will gain in years to come.

Don't forget to keep the packaging intact with all the instruction manuals et al!

Of course there will be many, many iPhone models for everyone. No doubt about it. The question is only when...
Apple will hit hard...

I need my iPhone Shuffle? (Calls to your Mom/Dad randomly to keep her/him happy and excludes words like money and no out of the discussion)

MDN Magic Word: period as in period.

Ranges are 59-99,100-199,200-399,400-599,600-1999?

These rumors from the Chinese manufacturers are notoriously inaccurate, so take it with a boulder-sized piece of salt, folks.

The Crabapple has left the building! grin

Smells like a planted, false story from the competition to slow sales of the present iPhone.

Jul 17, 07 - 05:20 pm Comment from: tt

its called the video ipod folks... NOT 2nd gen iphone

Jul 17, 07 - 05:22 pm Comment from: me

I've thought about keeping my iPhone in the box and never opening it. To see what they go for in 10 years NIB w/dead battery.

Jul 17, 07 - 05:24 pm Comment from: R

Yup, if anything it's for iPod. In time for a holiday release?

Jul 17, 07 - 05:26 pm Comment from: AshNazg

iPods on track for a Christmas release! Yeee haw!

Jul 17, 07 - 06:01 pm Comment from: Abdullah

Wow, never knew Apple was so dumb! I mean, here they have triple-lock security about their future plans with hardly anybody getting a peep - and out there in Taiwan, the whole world knows what Apple is doing next!

I'm putting a sell on Apple, the manufacturers of the iPhone!

too right, tt. The next iPods will have this technology sans phone, for the rest of us who don't want to enrich AT&T;.

Jul 17, 07 - 06:22 pm Comment from: Thomas from Deutschland

How would a chinese producer of touch screens know about Apple's retail price? I say: bullshit...

Jul 17, 07 - 09:45 pm Comment from: Less is More

Could this be for no-data plans?

Jul 18, 07 - 03:06 am Comment from: Holy Mackerel

The only delay has been caused by Apple insisting they change their name from Wintek to Mactek.

@ Abdullah -

Or, this might be completely on purpose. iPhone has been getting all the press lately, maybe Apple wants to get the buzz going for the next gen. iPod.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

It is great to see that an Apple phone for those that don't drive Porche or Ferraris.

But when will Mac Daily News report on the ongoing wifi problems with the iphone? Duke University is screaming at Apple because their iphone is pounding access points because it selects a bad router address. While Cisco is helping with the problem, good 'ole Apple hasn't even returned an email. According to Duke:

"I don't believe it’s a Cisco problem in any way, shape, or form," Miller said, adding that so far communications with Apple have been "one-way."

So, there is a big wifi problem in the iphone and sites like this are burying the problem so corporate network engineers won't know where to look. As so many others have said, this product is not ready for the corporate market and pretending that there are no problems or issues is a good way to crash your network. Who cares if this happens to an individual? Crash your network all day. But to companies that need to make money or universities, this is a catastrophe.

Until Apple comes clean with the problem and a solution, companies need to stay far away from the iphone.

@Win (Mac) Realist

nice try! Clearly you can only read a few lines at a time.

Everyone, including current and former CISCO engineers are saying it's a DUKE config problem, with their CISCO routers. The iPhone, as cool as it is, isn't capable of generating the thousands of IP calls their talking about.

If it was an iPhone issue, with the millions sold we'd be hearing screaming left and right, up and down the continent.

Stop trollin'

it's boring

@M@c

That's a possibility, but I think highly unlikely.

Firstly, it is too soon for Apple to be shifting focus away from the iPhone and back towards the iPod. The iPhone has barely been released in the U.S., and is still not released anywhere else. So why would Apple want to pour cold water on its latest and arguably most important offering?

Let us remember that a wildly successful launch is just a good start - the iPhone needs to become a steady, consistent seller at all times. It doesn't seem sensible for Apple, of all people, to try and shift attention away from it at this point, especially since the iPod really doesn't need any kind of pre-release buzz to become a best-seller each time a new version is released.

But more importantly, it seems that is simply not the way Apple does business. It is notoriously secretive - and I would think the Taiwan parts makers (or any other manufacturers for Apple parts) would have been told in no uncertain terms that any info leak would lead to an immediate loss of what must be a very lucrative contract.

I think we also need to look at these reports in the Taiwan context - how the media works there, how much of what they report for domestic consumption is expected to be the whole truth and nothing but.

Maybe speculation about Apple products sells papers there.
