Retailers report heavy demand for Apple iPod as holiday shopping season begins

“iPods became the big-selling product for the US holiday season this weekend, as online retailer Best Buy, Amazon and eBay reported heavy demand for the music players,” Dan Nystedt reports for Macworld UK. “Sales of black 4GB iPod nanos shot up 95 per cent, while the white version leaped 88 per cent between Friday November 25, and Saturday November 26, compared to a week earlier, according to eBay Marketplace Research, an eBay service that tracks purchasing behaviour. Retailer Best Buy was sold out of both the white and black versions of the 4GB iPod nano through its online store. The iPod nano was the sixth biggest-selling item on Amazon in the US.”

Nystedt reports, “The US celebrated Thanksgiving last week, after which consumers regularly begin their Christmas shopping. Apple has repeatedly confirmed ‘staggering’ demand for its music players.”

  1. Man, am I glad I ordered one early.

So far, so good. No scratches to report and it works great (black 4GB).

Sure would be nice to get a new iPod for Christmas (the video one, hint, hint).

    Just in case my wife reads this. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

PS- Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving (who has one). Everybody else, hope the weekend was good (for those areas that have Saturday and Sunday as a weekend). For everybody else, enjoy the weekend coming up. (It really gets confusing sometimes trying to remember that the whole world loves Apple.)

  2. Apple should embargo Worst Buy for the sh*t way that they handle the Mac mini in their stores. If there is a more PC-centric bunch in the computer retailing world, I have not seen it. I actually have heard Worst Buy employees bad-mouthing the Mac in the store to prospective customers.

  3. WorstBuy – You’re so right. Last time I was there a salesman told me that Apple (and the Mac) would be history in 5 years… “That’s what they’re telling us” was his reply when I asked why on earth would he say that.

And another time, when the Mini first hit BB, I walked up to a salesman who was standing next to the Mini display, and described the computer I wanted to buy — my description was everything that the Mini was and a PC was not — and he walked me over to another aisle and pointed to an eMachines cheapo model.

  4. They can’t bad mouth the Mac Mini in our local Best Buy. The single display model they had disappeared months ago. There’s nothing to talk about.

If Apple really wants to use Best Buy as a source for their computers they need to send teams of trainers to each store. I feel certain that Best Buy managers and salespeople simply feel it is not worth the time and trouble to learn about a single product that not enough cutomers are asking for.

You want iPods? They have iPods. They show iPods. They know iPods. When enough customers want a Mini they will probably learn about them too. Maybe next year when they can demo Windoze apps on them things will start to change.
