RIM launches Apple iTunes App Store wannabe
Wednesday, April 01, 2009 - 11:13 AM EST

Research In Motion today launches BlackBerry App World, the company's new on-device application store for BlackBerry smartphones.

RIM says that BlackBerry App World is immediately available to BlackBerry smartphone users in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, with more country launches to follow. Users in these countries can download the BlackBerry App World application to their BlackBerry smartphone by visiting www.blackberry.com/appworld from their handset (available for BlackBerry smartphones with a trackball or touch-screen running BlackBerry device software 4.2 or higher).

According to RIM, BlackBerry App World is designed to automatically present the relevant catalog of applications available for a user’s specific BlackBerry smartphone model.

MacDailyNews Take: Sounds like a developer's worst nightmare come true.

Users can access BlackBerry App World over both Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion, will highlight BlackBerry App World in his keynote this morning at CTIA 2009 in Las Vegas.

Applications on BlackBerry App World can be reviewed by users and those reviews are reflected in star ratings. Users can easily access and read reviews from other users, see screenshots and read a description of each application before they download it. BlackBerry App World supports both free and for-purchase applications.

MacDailyNews Take: Something about this sounds familiar and, the funny thing is, we literally can put our finger on it.

RIM says that they expect "approximately 1,000 applications" to be posted by partners on BlackBerry App World this week.

More info here.

MacDailyNews Take: What a great idea! How in the world did RIM ever come up with this concept?

haha, they are using paypal for app payments...

RIM expects "approximately 1,000 applications" to be posted by partners. So, that could be 100 apps for 10 types of BlackBerry phones. Just how many variations are we talking about?

Yeah, that will be just like the Apple app Store.

Wow, let's see...Apple's birthday today, Windoze Marketplace is out, so is the Blackberry App World, and the Conficker worm is set to reak havoc and mayhem all over the Windoze universe.

Just another April Fool's Day, huh?

Peace.

What this does provide RIM are apps that extend the use of Blackberry beyond it’s core functionality and for most people that is all that matters. Add the fact there is multiple Blackberry models available across EVERY carrier on the planet and it can only help push the Blackberry brand. This is all about landgrab as mobility is the new internet and everyone wants a presence.

So if I'm joe user and I:

A. Want to select the carrier that works best for me
B. Has similar apps that I use daily (facebook, GPS, etc etc)
C. Different device styles and price points

Blackberry is a very strong option to meet all those needs.

Now if I was a pompous turtle neck wearing Apple moron I'd whine how I can't multi-swipe and the browser is better but all the major advantes iPhone has are slowly slipping away and it will come back to what device works best for you and your needs.

They're using PayPal to do their transactions!!! Oh my!

They can't even do their own money stuff, and are going to rely on Paypal.

Has anyone ever called Paypal and tried to get themselves set up...it was a nightmare for me.

Apr 01, 09 - 10:40 am Comment from: CD

Maybe we should call this E-World.

Apr 01, 09 - 10:41 am Comment from: Jersey_Trader

It looks like BlackBerry has 3 smart phones (at this time) Storm, Bold and Curve. So, if we abandon all their old smart phones, it could be that they are hoping for (expecting) "APPROXIMATELY" 333 applications for a total of 1000?

Really sad and clueless.

Apr 01, 09 - 10:41 am Comment from: Yawn ..

Weird but isn't paypal the delfacto standard for ebay? It still requires bank / cc to purchase. I would imagine at some point to add straight payment via CC.

Apr 01, 09 - 10:41 am Comment from: iSteve

The BBs I've seen (friends/co-workers) have very little memory for more applications.

Apr 01, 09 - 10:48 am Comment from: Bobby

I own a Blackberry Curve and it absolutely SUCKS. The browser is the worst, e-mail is marginal at best with nothing but links, links, links for everything in most e-mail and as a phone-it barely works. Apps-you've got to be kidding, this thing has less memory that a C64. Can't wait for my contract to roll ver so I can get a REAL phone from Apple.

Sure, MacBBGuy, everyone is catching up to the iPhone. Or at least, the iPhone that was introduced. What happens when Apple releases the NEXT iPhone? Everyone will be tripping all over themselves to catch up. Again. That is what you pompous Apple hating imitators do.

Apr 01, 09 - 10:51 am Comment from: Nate

I wonder why the designer felt the need to use 7 facebook application screens in that graphic. Hopefully this app store hasn't been launched prematurely, for their sake.

MacBBguy:

Regrettably, you simply don't understand. The fundamental difference between Apple's devices and everyone else is very clearly reflected in user satisfaction numbers. Bullet-point lists of features do not a superior device make. Pretty much everyone in the industry concedes the level of emotional attachment that owners Apple products have. And we aren't talking about your usual Mac zealots here; we're talking ordinary armies of iPod and iPhone owners (over 50 million of them -- more than Macs!).

Average iPhone/iPod owner has downloaded 20 apps in last nine months. That is AVERAGE! Think about it for a moment; there are many iPod touch owners who have no knack for technology and only want an iPod to listen to their music. Yet, they seem to be downloading apps.

I have no doubt RIM will find their little store helpful to their bottom line somewhat. There is no chance in he11 they would sell anywhere near one billion apps worth $1 billion (with a 'B') within nine months (like Apple did), nor get anywhere near 30,000 apps in the same time (i.e. by 1 January 2010). Therein lies the difference between Apple and everyone else. And that's why Apple's device will always be coveted by the masses ("I guess I'm just not cool enough to be a Mac person", says Microsoft's "Lauren"...).

Ballmer said once: "Developers, developers, developers..." (and kept going on and on for a while...). We can all agree that became a major contributor to Windows desktop dominance (not Ballmer's statement; the embracing of the OS by the developers). We are clearly seeing the same trend here on the iPhone/iPod platform. The path is pretty clear.

I'm actually glad Blackberry has this thing up and running. They cater to a different crowd than Apple, there is no threat that they will become a monopoly and once again Microsoft is completely behind the curve. I think the market will be better served if three or maybe four major players are always pushing the envelope.

And I doubt the BB app store will be pushing $1 billion in revenue in a year and a half like the Apple App store is going to do.

I read on some other Discussion Boards a few weeks ago that the Blackberry OS has a limitation of 256 MB for ALL the Apps that you could load on your Blackberry. Don't know if this is an accurate statement or not.

It had something to do with the limitation imposed by the Blackberry SYSTEM Memory and not the TOTAL memory of the device itself. I know I have 450+ MB allocated to my Apps on my iPhone and, if true, this could be a problem for Blackberry users if there is an App memory limitation.

Anybody care to shed some light on this? Like I said, I don't know if this is true or not, but I'm just curious to find out the details concerning this issue.

Apr 01, 09 - 11:24 am Comment from: Anonymous©

@spark, I read that too, but I also read someone had created a method to get around it, and you could keep apps on a SD card. Either way, it's a kludge.

I have over 1GB of apps in about 129 apps, including Apple's. Imagine if you had a TomTom or Garmin nav app with 1GB of maps! I don't think BB can handle that.

Just two quick points.

The iPhone is not for everybody. After much research and open-minded-ness, there are lots of different people with lots of different needs and the iPhone does not fill them all. (exp. young teen females want a super cute, tiny phone that fits in their jeans without making a buldge and not breaking if they sit on it. OPPPS. OK need another --cheap--super cute phone that ..... you get the idea)

One of the iPhones biggest draws is music / video. I have spend some dollars and time reviewing the newest mp3 players from super cheap to somewhat expensive.

First, they all play music... fine.

But, their interface.... for getting music into and out of the players .... SUCKS so bad that I an thinking of throwing them away... Even my enemies do not deserve such CRAP. The lack of attention to detail in how such simple devices should work BOGGLES the mind.

And I am trying to help a friend use several of their mp3 players. One from RCA has a custom interface and without their software which she has mis-placed, even pc computers do not recognice that there is anything out there. Total crap.

So, I totally convinced that its the interface that makes or breaks the deal here. Small simple device or complex one, if you cannot figure out how to make it work.... its crap. grin

PS, now I need to figure out how to sell these crappy... er great little grin mp3 players so I can get my money back and buy a new iPod shuffle. grin

PS. its not all hate. I have one really old mp3 player that has 128 meg of memory that still works great. (and with iTunes too) and a new one that is kinds big but simple and just runs. But why bother any more.

Just a thought,
en

how do you 'literally' put your finger on a sound?

PC Mag likes it. Maybe Shawn King can go work for them.

@MDN=dumberer...

MDN was referring to "multi-touch" found only on the iphone, and the fact that you can access the real App store with one touch of the finger.

Word of the day for you is COMPREHENSION. It's your friend.

Apr 01, 09 - 12:18 pm Comment from: ed

It would seem to me that I would have to re-purchase every app each time I got a new phone since the binaries would be different. In fact, probably a lot of developers won't even have a version for each device. I don't know, just a guess

Apr 01, 09 - 12:19 pm Comment from: ed

By the way, does it have the same update system too? That's an important feature of the AppStore

Apr 01, 09 - 12:19 pm Comment from: Just Thinkin

I would think that corporations ( the biggest user of BB's) would want to lock down an not allow any apps that are not approved by the company similar to corporate computers, no?

Just went to the BB App World.

Guess what? Doesn't work natively on a mac! The page says sorry... quote...

"This web page uses ActiveX controls that work only in Microsoft Internet Explorer. To ensure that BlackBerry App World is correctly downloaded to your BlackBerry, this site is not designed to work with any other Internet browsers. If you cannot use Internet Explorer, you may be able to download the software directly to your BlackBerry smartphone."

Funny how suddenly all these BAD phone companies are now trying to give their long-suffering customers better facilities on their not-very-good phones.

Maybe GM and the other USELESS auto manufacturers will notice Tata, the Indian car co. and produce a small cheap car that does 60-80 mpg.

App World...Wow. Sounds like the KMart of online content delivery. MW - one, as in, this is not the one.

Apr 01, 09 - 02:57 pm Comment from: CB

App store is Windows only. Here is the notice if you go to http://mobileapps.blackberry.com/devicesoftware/entry.do?code=aw_desktop using Safari or Firefox. All the Blackberry users who do not use IE are screwed.

@Yawn
Paypal has had their own VISA card and revolving credit accounts available for years now. I've used this account several times for purchases on and off Ebay.
