RIM to launch music service for Blackberry devices
Monday, July 13, 2009 - 03:17 PM EST

Apple Online Store "A UK-based music download provider, 7Digital, will in September launch a service that lets owners buy songs and albums direct from their [RIM BlackBerry] handsets," Tim Bradshaw reports for The Financial Times.

"About 6m songs will be available to download in the US, UK, Canada, France, Italy, Germany and Spain," Bradshaw reports. "Other music applications are available, but this will be the first time BlackBerry customers will be able to download music direct to their handsets."

"Most tracks will not have copy protection software, which restricts how many devices the music can be moved to," Bradshaw reports. "Users will initially have to download an application from BlackBerry App World, RIM’s answer to Apple’s App Store."

Bradshaw reports, "Tracks will typically cost 79p ($0.99) and albums £7.99 ($9.99), the same as on 7Digital’s existing download store for desktop computers."

MacDailyNews Take: It certainly didn't take long for Apple to completely reduce the obviously shameless RIM to the Microsoftian role of derivative follower.

Does anyone know what DRM will be used? Does RIM license WMA?

And to that point, I thought DRM was dead. Who would buy a DRM laced song today?

"RIM’s answer to Apple’s App Store."

A so tiny "answer" for a so BIG question.....

Jul 13, 09 - 02:54 pm Comment from: Grigori

Yeah, that'll work.

Jul 13, 09 - 02:58 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

Just when you thought RIM couldn't get any cooler—BOOM!—they surprise everyone and pull another rabbit out of their hat. Awesome! If it's anything like Zune Marketplace I'll be thrilled. Congratulations RIM and I expect we'll be hearing great things in the future. Buh-bye bug-ridden, proprietary and subscription-challenged I-Tunes Store!

Your potential. Our passion.™

@Dallas,

It says most tracks willnot use copy protection software.

"Most tracks will not have copy protection software..."

This is what annoys consumers. Random DRM. Some have it, some don't. If they do have DRM, different songs will have different limitations. But then the same price?

Makes no sense to me. The music industry can't seem to help but keep reloading and shooting themselves in the foot.

Thanks once again, Zune Tang, for your fine sense of humor.

Audio was never designed or incorporated into the Blackberry and has a long way to go to come close to the iPhone or any iPod.

What's the point of listening to music on a device that has lousy audio specs and in which audio is intended to serve phone talk mainly?

Train wreck.

OK, funny ha-ha aside, are there any serious stats regarding what percentage of BB sales are actually go to willing paying consumers as their own primary smartphone? I wonder how companies feel about their corporate issued work phones being used as music player and for purchasing music, and who wants to bet those BB users will have no clue how to keep or move the songs when their corporate issued BBs gets switched to a new model or get yanked? Ask tech support to download to their corporate issued Windows work PCs, I presume. I just can't see it at my workplace. But I guess if I work or RIM and I asked those questions, I'd be fired.

"It says most tracks willnot use copy protection software"

I know, I read that too. But I was asking about the rest of the tracks that aren't 'most track'.

Jul 13, 09 - 03:40 pm Comment from: dallas

"Most Track" = the tracks you don't want to buy.

I can only speak anecdotally, but I have a number of high school students that have BBs and use them as their primary music/media player. So, probably quite a large potential market. Even when you take out the corp guys who can't use their phones as media players

Good luck. Gonna need it.

Notice, though, that this is not RIM developing the service, but an existing service now providing downloads direct to Blackberrys.

I think on the iPhone that would just be another app on the App Store, wouldn't it (except that it competes w/iTunes)? IOW, not such a big deal.

Jul 13, 09 - 06:10 pm Comment from: GregoriusM

Where in the article does it say that RIM is launching the service? 7Digital is, not RIM.

Another misleading headline.

Blackberry users are getting their Pay Pal accounts loaded up.

Jul 13, 09 - 10:13 pm Comment from: Predrag

Dallas:

I don't know what kind of high school you're talking about, but most polls/surveys/research seems to indicate that vast majority of high school students want an iPhone and nothing else. If some do have a BB, many more will have an iPhone. The biggest market segment for BB definitely is NOT teens, or young adults. It is corporate world, and as freebeer already said, it is very difficult to imagine any corporate IT department willingly supporting music downloads on corporate devices.

Jul 13, 09 - 10:30 pm Comment from: Dallas

@predrag

Like I said, I can only speak anecdotally. Lots of my students have BB's. In fact, quite a few more have BB's than iPhones. Now, that is probably due heavily to the iPhone requiring the $30/month extra data plan and most families with 3 teenagers can't afford an iPhone for each kiddo these days. The BB Pearl makes a cool enough second choice for them. That is what I see in my class room whether the polls agree or not.

BB regardless of what MDN wants you to think, BB's are actually really great phones and RIM has sold quite a few. Even if 90% of black berry users can't use their phones for that, that's still 5,000,000+ users that can. The market is certainly there. And try not to sound so condescending.

Jul 14, 09 - 08:48 am Comment from: Derek in Milan

@Dallas:
Anecdotally? Saying that a majority of kids have Blackberries isnt an anecdote, its a plain statement of fact, when referring to your classroom.

I am surprised that kids have Blackberries in the classroom.

Most schoolkids have iPods for music. What kind of crappy phone they use isnt really an issue.
The notion that the new Blackberry music store will have any effect on Blackberry sales is idiotic.

iTunes rules the online music scene and iPods are easily the desired music player for all.
Thats also a fact.

Another fact is that no-one is going to re-purchase all their music for use on a stinkin' Blackberry, are they?
Especially financially-challenged students.

RIM are simply copying without any thought. They are a one-trick pony and dont have the technology, the SOFTWARE, or the imagination and design to compete with Apple.

Why do I smell a troll?
