Rogers system melts down in Canadian iPhone 4 launch

“Rogers suffered embarrassment in an iPhone launch again today as Electronista readers have reported that the company’s activation system has shut down completely during the iPhone 4 release,” Electronista reports. “Many customers have been unable to get Apple’s device activated nationwide and in many cases are being told to go home with reservations for the devices. All other carriers, including Rogers’ own sub-brand Fido, weren’t affected by the issue.”

“At Apple stores, where every Canadian carrier is an option, customers shopping for Bell, Fido, Telus and Virgin models have been moved to the front of the queue, which still exists at many stores,” Electronista reports. “Unlocked customers could also get their devices, although any planning to get a Rogers micro SIM will still have to wait themselves.”

Electronista reports, “The issue has triggered frustration from Rogers subscribers, who have never faced an iPhone launch day without major issues.”

  1. Rogers sent us a letter last month informing us that they had overcharged us $132 in the past year.

Last week they called and told us they were offering a 20% discount on our internet service.

I get over 2500 kbps download

Very few if any dropped calls, and they only occur in a very hilly part of the area in the next county. In which I shut off my 3G for the short period I am traveling through there.

If my cable goes down they respond virtually immediately. On-line, on-the-phone or in person.

Maybe because your attract more bees with honey than vinegar.

  2. The Roger website on an ordinary day often has performance issues. Can’t access account information, can’t access phone upgrade information, slow or hangs on ordinary tasks.

  3. No phone for me today. But in all fairness I just wasn`t up to hitting EVERY outlet in Toronto, tried my local Rogers store, no dice, I WILL GET AN IPHONE 4…… just not today, or maybe even next week by the looks of things.

  4. Rogers network is reliable, I give you that. I’ve had zero problems in the last year. But they are still over-priced and nag you as soon as your bill is past due. Not once have I received a Thank You call from Rogers. It’s always “when are you going to pay your outstanding balance?”… annoying when I’m paying them hundreds of $$$ every month.

  5. AT&T has been a stellar provider in the states. Excellent data coverage, a far better 3G network than Verizon, great customer service. Like Steve Jobs and Tim Cook repeatedly say, AT&T has been a great partner for Apple.

  6. Not really. My activation went off fine and I think they have the best price, $159 for 16G, best options – iPad/iPhone data sharing, and great $30 6G data promotions. And their service when calling is domestic and helpful n

  7. Was first in line today at a Rogers store in Oakvill Place. I actually got my two done just before the meltdown. I am glad. I wouldn’t have been able to make it through my weekend at the cottage without it. It is amazing. And, I can’t make my signal drop.

  8. Rogers… what a terrible, terrible manipulative company. Just last week they LOWERED monthly download limits and announced they are charging more for their service. A blatant response to Netflix coming to Canada.

This shitty almost-monopoly is stifling innovation and citizens access to the internet.

    SHAME ON ROGERS!!!!

  9. In Sweden all four big mobile operators webservers more or less crashed after midnight on July 30th when they started taking orders for iPhone 4. I seems iPhone practically sold out first day. Weborders after 24hrs are estimating delivery in 3-4 weeks!

  10. [Rogers’ own sub-brand Fido].

Uh. Let’s clarify. Rogers’ “innovated” to get GSM by buying Fido.

    MDmac is a Rogers’ employee.

    [Netflix coming to Canada.]

Netflix will fail in Canada. Because of the bandwidth holders. Put money on that prediction.

    [That’s what I call a good rogering.]

    Indeed.
