RUMOR: Apple iPhone coming to Verizon Wireless soon
Monday, February 23, 2009 - 10:40 AM EDT

"Apple is certain to allow Verizon to join its elite band of Iphone providers, bringing to an end the exclusive and somewhat stupid exclusivity deal in its biggest market," Nick Farrell reports for ITExaminer.

"Deep throats in Apple claim that Iphones for Verizon Wireless will be announced soon," Farrell reports.

"While the deal is so secret that Apple will not even hint that it is happening, the outfit had been trying to find EVDO and CDMA Engineers for months in their online Iphone job postings. While EVDO could cover a wide range of 3G skills, it is more likely that Apple is specifically after the Verizon Wireless standard," Farrell reports.

Farrell reports, "It is possible that Apple employees are hammering out a more open deal while Jobs is recovering..."

Can you just imagine the dominance that the iPhone would have if this happens?

Feb 23, 09 - 11:47 am Comment from: mAc-warrior

If this article is trying to argue that this is the result of Steve Jobs being "away" from the company then either:

a) The author is an idiot, trolling for hits, or
b) The author does not know the meaning of the word research.

Apple (and Steve Jobs) both stated that Steve would continue to be involved in the major strategic decisions of the company during his leave of absence. Obviously this would constitute a major strategic decision.

I'll believe this rumor when I see it for sure. That said, I hope it's true. A CDMA version of the iPhone would be perfect up here in Canada.

I'm going to assume the "somewhat stupid" part is meant to refer to Verizon, who turned Apple down the first time around.

Feb 23, 09 - 11:52 am Comment from: The SteenMachine

If the iPhone was on Verizon, that would be huge. Plus, if the ATT exclusivity is only 2yrs (no one knows for sure), this June/July would be the "go" date.

But I have a hard time believing it.

1) Verizon still wants too much control over the phone. Huge conflict of interest with Apple, Steve J present or not.

2) This article references a 9-5Mac article from 6 months ago. Seems like if this had any steam, it wouldn't have been dormant for so long.

If this happens- game over for the "competition".

please, please, please!!!

Feb 23, 09 - 11:59 am Comment from: Believe it when I see it

I find it hard to believe VZW & Apple will agree to and settle the differences they had to begin with.

Will Apple allow V-Cast? Will VZW allow wifi?

Both companies have huge ego's so it would be interesting.

iPhone still have the same issues and shortcomings so while it may have an initial bump it's ongoing growth has fallen and decreased due to other options are available. (no matter if they are as good or not)

Feb 23, 09 - 12:10 pm Comment from: HMCIV

Deep Throats??? THIS ISN'T A FRAKING COVERUP IT'S A RUMOR THAT FLIES IN THE FACE OF APPLE'S EXCLUSIVE AGREEMENT WITH AT&T;YOU NERD.

Feb 23, 09 - 12:13 pm Comment from: edgeknight

I don't think any other carrier is getting an iPhone 3G. However, with Verizon rolling out LTE test markets by the end of the year, we may see some version of iPhone LTE coming down the pipeline.

Feb 23, 09 - 12:20 pm Comment from: maclover

Nothing like a fishy rumor to boost Verizon's stock price. Crooks.

Feb 23, 09 - 12:20 pm Comment from: JRA

More hyperbole that will create more instability in Apple stock.

Feb 23, 09 - 12:27 pm Comment from: thethirdshoe

The iPhone has been a big boost for ATT. I would think they would try hard to hang on to it.

Feb 23, 09 - 12:31 pm Comment from: therepguy

Let's not leave out T-Mobile who network is the same as AT&T;'s

Feb 23, 09 - 12:38 pm Comment from: TowerTone

I've never been able to understand what a deep throater is saying.
Maybe she meant "there is a new iPhone on the horizon"....

Feb 23, 09 - 12:39 pm Comment from: _Bill_

I thought AT&T;had a 5-year, exclusive contract with Apple. Wasn't that big news when the iPhone first came out? We're just over 1.5 years in now.

The infamous temporary stock boosting rumor. Verizon stocks have been taking a dive since October of last year. Customers are wising up to the fact that Verzon's iPhone competitor offerings are simply a joke. Verizon can try begging Apple for an iPhone deal. That may work a lot better than these false rumors.

Feb 23, 09 - 12:57 pm Comment from: JMO

Can't imagine this will actually happen, but I hope it does. Competition would do ATT some good. The current iPhone contract is just dumb....$30 extra per month for a required data plan...with no text messaging included. $10 more per month for unlimted texting...all of a sudden you're dropping $40 per month on top of your wireless minute plan! It's time that data plans and texting are included for one base monthly price.

Feb 23, 09 - 01:08 pm Comment from: Rob

This deal is so secret, even Apple doesn't know about it.

Feb 23, 09 - 01:12 pm Comment from: Demon

More then likely Apple will sell non-subsidized Open Carrier CDMA/EVDO iPhones at full price in the Apple Store.

Apple could also us CDMA/EVDO in a new Non/iPhone product as well.

Feb 23, 09 - 01:19 pm Comment from: jtc

it would be great if the iphone hit verizon... gets more people to get an iphone so they wont have to cancel their verizon plan to go with ATT especially if ATT isn't a good signal in their area.

Feb 23, 09 - 01:21 pm Comment from: LordRobin

I can't see this happening. Verizon's policy is to charge extra for every single thing you do on your phone above and beyond making simple calls. I just can't see them allowing a Wi-Fi device on their network that would allow users to bypass their services.

That said, as a Verizon customer (my employer offers a discount), if they do offer the iPhone, I'm there.

"The iPhone has been a big boost for ATT. I would think they would try hard to hang on to it."

Come again? AT&T;stock has gone from 40 to 23 since June of 2006. How is that a boost for AT&T;?

Feb 23, 09 - 01:27 pm Comment from: Tad

There was that episode of Tekzilla where Veronica Belmont told the story of how she was canceling her Verizon because she was getting her iPhone.
Verizon rep: "Is there anything we can do to keep your business?"
Veronica, apologetically: "I'm sorry, and I mean...your service is great, never had a problem with you guys, you've been fantastic, but, you know...iPhone..."
Verizon rep: "Yeah, I know."

I'm not saying Verizon is perfect, but if the rumor is true then there will be iPhone customers who will be a little happier because they weren't forced into AT&T;.

Feb 23, 09 - 01:30 pm Comment from: Islandgirl

This would be great news! I have an old, clunky phone on Verizon right now and would love to switch it out but nothing they offer really attracts me. It's mostly a lot of Windows Mobile stuff.

Feb 23, 09 - 01:31 pm Comment from: Gary

There are markets outside the USA that use EVDO, which might explain the need for EVDO engineers at Apple and won't be an issue with AT&T;exclusivity in the U.S.

Besides, the whole world will move to LTE in the next few years. WiMAX may make it, but probably won't. It will probably "merge" with LTE. (A polite way of saying LTE won the war.)

Feb 23, 09 - 01:51 pm Comment from: Willie G

It was widely reported when the iPhone 3G was announced, that Apple and AT&T;restructured (to allow for the current subsidies) their agreement and that the exclusivity was to AT&T;in the US was extended.

That alone tells me this supposed 'rumor' is nothing more than a baseless bit of wishing on the part of someone who lives in an area where Verizon's coverage is better than AT&T;'s. Which of course means he/she doesn't live in Long Beach, CA cause Verizon sucks out here.

Feb 23, 09 - 02:18 pm Comment from: NCG598

OH FOR CRYING OUTLOUD! VERZION TURNED DOWN THE IPHONE.

What is so bad about exclusive deals. Apple offered Verzion the exclusive deal and the airheads turned them down.

Now they are begging for it. Sounds like the girl friend that dumped her boyfriend for a wealther guy. Then the ex gets millions and she wants him back!

Feb 23, 09 - 02:23 pm Comment from: steve32465

@ huh oh... The stock drop isn't a true gage of what the iPhone as done for AT&T;. If you look at there subscriber numbers, that would be a better indicator. Which has been a tremendous increase!

Feb 23, 09 - 02:30 pm Comment from: stucktrader

not going to happen as long as AT&T;keeps giving control to Apple as they have been.

Any deal with VZ would get @least a 10% gain on both stocks but a huge drop on AT&T;...

Feb 23, 09 - 03:05 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

"Stupid exclusivity deal" ?

A contract is a contract. And that's what Apple has with AT&T;(and a bunch of other's around the world)

The iPhone is expensive to make (not to mention the R&D;)
For Apple to make a profit they a large subsidy from the carriers. To get the carriers to cough up the money, they need an exclusive contract.

That's how it works.

Feb 23, 09 - 03:09 pm Comment from: Cubert

"Apple is certain to allow Verizon to join its elite band of Iphone providers"

When are these people ever going to learn that it is "iPhone" and not "IPhone"?

He didn't even use it to start the sentence and still screwed it up!

Feb 23, 09 - 04:11 pm Comment from: monster

The exclusive AT&T;deal was said to be *five* years at the iPhone announcement.

Feb 23, 09 - 04:33 pm Comment from: MarkyMark

Not gonna happen...

Feb 23, 09 - 04:48 pm Comment from: Crabs

@The Steen Machine

Actually, Verizon has started allowing phone manufacturers to design their own interfaces, do whatever they want, really, through Verizon OPEN Wireless-

"Verizon Wireless today announced that it will provide customers the option to use, on its nationwide wireless network, wireless devices, software and applications not offered by the company. Verizon Wireless plans to have this new choice available to customers throughout the country by the end of 2008…"

So really, other than subsidization, all Apple has to do is make a CDMA iPhone, and anyone can use it on Verizon.

Feb 23, 09 - 04:58 pm Comment from: Romeodawg

I agree with the fat girl pop-under MDN. NO ONE WHO READS MDN WOULD CLICK ON THAT STUPID AD.

MDN has the worst of the irritating ads of any website I visit. Really undermines the integrity of the site. MDN is becoming a junk site, with 10% info, 50% ads, and 40% whiny fanboys who still think it's funny to comment about something being snappy or to be first post. How the hell old are we?

Feb 23, 09 - 05:20 pm Comment from: Bizlaw

@ uh oh:
Citing any company's stock drop since June 2006 and trying to blame one product is stupid. The entire market is down by nearly 50% since then.

Apple and AT&T;have an exclusive agreement. Verizon would have to make some serious concessions to Apple to get Apple to break it's AT&T;deal. Remember, Apple approached Verizon first, and Verizon turned them down. I seriously doubt Jobs is working hard to get back into Verizon's stable anytime soon. He'd much rather have Verizon come crawling back to Apple, begging to have the iPhone (which they may well be doing), but Apple's not about to give them anything.

Feb 23, 09 - 05:55 pm Comment from: alansky

Calling Apple's exclusive deal with AT&T;"stupid" is really ignorant. Without an exclusive deal, no mobile service provider was ready to take a chance on Apple's radical new entry. Apple did what they needed to do to ensure that the iPhone would see the light of day. The rest, of course, is history, as Apple's exclusive contract with AT&T;will be when it finally expires.

Feb 23, 09 - 06:04 pm Comment from: alansky

@Romeodawg:

I agree with you. The advertising that litters this site is really obnoxious. And the quality of the comments is, on average, among the worst of any tech site I know of. The only reason I bother with MDN at all is because the articles are usually worth reading. But sometimes I wonder if it's worth it.

Feb 23, 09 - 10:00 pm Comment from: twilightmoon

@ alansky

What tech sites are you referring to which are better?

Slashdot is a bunch of entitlement twits without a clue, Ars has some of the same but at least the signal to noise ratio there is less, Appleinsider is pretty good, but certainly far fewer articles. The comments on Roughly Drafted are often pretty good, but again far fewer articles.

Which other ones did I not mention that you think are fantastic?

Feb 23, 09 - 11:31 pm Comment from: ken1w

I don't think it's going to happen any time soon. Besides the increased cost in designing, supporting, and maintaining a CDMA version of iPhone, there is no way Verizon will allow Apple to control the media content provided on any Verizon phone. And iPhone without the iTunes Store is not an iPhone, and Apple would not agree to that...

Now, if Apple did get Verizon to just provide the network, and get the frak out of the way and be invisible for everything else, THAT would be a HUGE win for Apple.

Feb 24, 09 - 09:50 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Pricing Competition for AT&T;'s iPhone plans would benefit everyone.

I'm not holding my breath for a second waiting for this to happen anytime soon.
