RUMOR: Apple iPhone to be sold at Best Buy stores in time for holidays
Friday, August 03, 2007 - 02:24 PM EDT

"Apple Inc. is preparing to broaden its iPhone distribution to several prime retailers well ahead of the holiday shopping season," Kasper Jade reports for AppleInsider.

"Since introducing the handset on June 29th, the Cupertino-based firm has confined sales of the device to Apple and AT&T retail stores, in addition to its online shop. But over the next 4 to 6 weeks, iPhone inventories should start cropping up at other high-profile retailers and prime AT&T wireless partners, people familiar with the matter say," Jade reports.

"Among those first in line for the gadget is specialty electronics retailer and Apple's new best friend in the retail business, Best Buy. By October -- and more likely by September -- all Best Buy locations should have iPhones on hand to sell to customers. Lavish video displays, like those erected in Apple retail store windows ahead of the phone's launch, may also turn up at the electronics stores," Jade reports.

Watching Apple these days is like watching one of those great choreographed displays of dominoes falling, each move triggering the next, sometimes one fall triggering two parallel lines.

Their execution these days is simply impressive.

Now that all the glitches with the signing of the accounts remotely have been dealt with, more people can now safely & quickly set up their accounts remotely.

@ Tom, they will be openning an academy of marketing pretty soon.

Apple rocks!

Your Frustration. Our Fault.

"@ Tom, they will be openning an academy of marketing pretty soon."

As long as they don't give away the real secret to their branding, which is top notch design.

Good old Kasper the Friendly Click Whore.

Although, I will say, this is one AppleOutsider may get right.

Big Al, i think you mean think secret. AppleInsider rumors are usually right

Aug 03, 07 - 03:19 pm Comment from: Legal Signs

Justified, your an idiot. I've heard other people call you an idiot in the past and you're clearly a moron as well. I think it's time I move on from MDN and find another place to discuss Apple stuff. It's clear this place is filled with under educated individuals like yourself. All you do is make cynical and off-base comments. The fact that you are consistant in these comments is the only thing you have going for you.

Aug 03, 07 - 03:23 pm Comment from: Stephen

This rumor may actually be worth somthing. My local Best Buy now has a big Apple display, complete with video screens and imacs, macbooks and macbook pros on display. You can't miss it as you walk in the front door and you actually have to walk past it to get to the windows boxes & notebooks. Curiously, the Apple display looks a bit empty like it can hold far more demo products, hello iPhone?

Aug 03, 07 - 03:23 pm Comment from: @Tom

I'll agree after Leopard and iLife come out.

MDN word, "seemed" - "everything seemed to be on schedule...."

Aug 03, 07 - 03:45 pm Comment from: sourpatch

Legal Signs, thanks for saving me the keystrokes.

I also agree that anyone saying "AppleOutsider" gets things wrong all the time is completely misinfored. I read Appleinsider daily and am surprised at their accuracy, to say the least.

I went into the Ft. Collins, CO Best Buy last Friday to check out the new Apple Store section.

Looked beautiful next to all the PC drivel. Then I sat in front of the 24" iMac and moved the mouse. The arrow moved about 3".

I checked the System Prefs and they had the Tracking Speed slowed down to the slowest setting. When I checked all of the rest, they were set the same. This applies to the laptops as well.

Anyone looking at a Mac for the first time would think, "Geez this sucks! It's so slow! My PeeCee kicks ass!"

So I sped them up.

You can bet, the sales nerd (an admitted PC gamer) reset them within 5 minutes of my departure.

Apple has an uphill battle all the way.

Looking forward to seeing how WorstBuy eff's this up as well.

Wow. I'm an idiot, others have called me an idiot, I'm a moron and you're moving on.

Don't let the digital door hit you in the ass. I'll be sure to cry you a river.

Aug 03, 07 - 06:19 pm Comment from: not fooled

Best Buy is no "prime" retailer. They are among the worst.

So what's next, Apple? Products at 7-11? How about McDonald's? The "iPod Happy Meal", I can see it now.

Apple, this does nothing for your brand.

Aug 03, 07 - 06:27 pm Comment from: still not fooled

You can bet, the sales nerd (an admitted PC gamer) reset them within 5 minutes of my departure.

Go back and ask the geek about Mac security and antivirus software. Act clueless & ask him how Mac security compares to Windows.

Enjoy the FUD, lies, and whatever other shit he sputters out. Expect a Vista PC sales pitch (with extra extended warranty you'll just HAVE to have).

Gotta love the big-box experience...

I wholeheartedly agree. Except for the falling dominoes part.

Dudes, several years ago iPods were sold only through the traditional Apple resellers.

Then other resellers started selling iPods. In some ways they faced problems with the sales force because they would may favor other mp3 players out of a personal bias.

However the popularity of the iPod overcame that and the benefit of having 10000 retail outlets ensured that Apple could sell 8-20M units per quarter.

Apple need to expand their retail base for Macs because they want to spread the good mac word to everyone. Imagine having Macs sold at 5000 outlets. The initial customer guidance may be lame but it will improve. The BestBuy experiment will help them work out the best approach.

Aug 03, 07 - 10:54 pm Comment from: justified

@DogGone,

I think the difference here is that the iPod was somewhat innocuous in that it was OS-neutral and it was such a new and breakout product for Apple that the whole industry – even the retailers – were side blinded.

The iPhone has been so closely tied to OS X in the perception of the public and tech folk alike that I'm afraid it would have a much higher barrier to entry through retailers like Best Buy, et al.

Aug 03, 07 - 11:09 pm Comment from: MacMorsel

Best Buy is just taking advantage of Apples' rise to the top, possibly in hopes that Apple will drag them along, in chain collar and leashes, to the top.

I'm no expert - I sell computers and electronics, everyday - but winblows (c'mon guys.. is either mediocresoft or winblows worth capitalizing?) boxes generally have a much larger return than Macs, where Apple sets the resellers purchase price and resale price, period. I can double my investment buying or building and then reselling winblows boxes.. but with Macs, you can't.

So, of course some fat executive of Best Buy decided over golf that "It would be in the investors' best interest to 'deter' inquisitive customers away from the less profitable merchandise." I mean, c'mon, don't you want as much money as YOU can get? Focus on greater returns, and the returns will be greater.

But guys..uhhum and gals, Apple will prevail. Do ya' wanna know why? Because its loyalists actually BELIEVE in their product. Mac loyalists KNOW they have a good product - mega$haft loyalists THINK they have a good product (and actually believe that we are stupid for being "the minority"). Apple has a long-term plan.. looongg-term. Apple knows that it needs as many outlets to release product to customers, in as many locations as possible. Stores-in-stores and resellers are cheaper than opening their own locations and can usually happen faster. Let the reseller do the work while Apple tells them how to market them and how much they will profit from the sale.
This is why Apple is branching into other "categories" of electronics - to REALLY get its name "out there." Right now, Apple needs to inbed it's name into todays young minds as THE HOT THING to have. When this generation makes the decisions, which electronics/software company do you think they will choose? Apple is hitting home runs, and they are kicking every single step and plate on the run home.

As a footnote, my money is on Apple (possible Apploogle alliance) purchasing the new spectrum, that will become available in 2008/2009?, in whole, and re-defining the computing era. And as a result, the 30 to 40-something generation experiencing todays computing will be insulted in 10-years for "stone-age computing technologies and networking."

In less than five years, the first REAL experience in personal computing will be introduced by Apple. A multi-touch tablet computer that is always connected to the internet - through an Apple owned and operated nationwide network. This network, purchased with its 14 billion dollar reserve, and possibly Google's four billion dollar "donation", becomes a MAJOR revenue stream for Apple. No matter where you go or what you do, you are connected and on-line, syncing with your home computer when within range, which happens to be hooked up to your large flat-panel Apple display. The tablet would then become your interactive multi-touch remote control. Imaging your whole home wired into the main computer. Real video calls will become the norm. Movies, music.. hell, whatever is available. So, what need is there for a phone, car stereos, cable/satellite programming, alarm companies, book stores, expensive internet cafes?.. the list goes on.

Apple definitely "thinks different". Other companies should sit up and pay attention. Not to learn what to do, but rather to know when to get off the road and park, or otherwise get ran the -uck over.

Wow, I don't think I've typed this much in a long time.

Magic word: Idiot. (i.e. You would be an idiot to steer your consumers away from purchasing something they would be happy with.)

Aug 04, 07 - 02:21 am Comment from: hardmanb

At my local Sam's Club, the main aisle is stacked up with four different models of iPods. So down the product line, Apple is already into discounting.

With the carrier removed from the activation process, why couldn't you just "buy the iPhone box" from Sam's Club, take it home and activate it, choosing your minutes plan through iTunes.

All the pieces are already in place for a massive consumer penetration by iPhone (and other Apple products).

I would have gone back and checked, hopefully found out who did it and wrote a complaining letter to the corporate heads at Best Buy and busted the guy.

Unfortunately the world is full of idiots.

Either:

1. The letter would've never filtered up to anyone capable of making a decision, or:

2. The bozo would've been promoted for his sales-steering tactics.

Who gives a shit! Best buy sells mostly Shit brand consumer items any way. They should stick with Microsoft crap and sink with the ship!
