RUMOR: Apple iPhone to feature larger flash memory, more features than expected
Tuesday, May 29, 2007 - 04:03 PM EDT

Apple Store"According to our source from an Apple affliate (that shall not be named), Steve Jobs left out some of the iPhone’s features out of his Macworld keynote…and at the same time downplayed some the features," ViM3 reports.

"Why would Steve downplay some of the features? Our source says that since the iPhone would be released in June, Apple did not want to affect iPod sales. Apple has not released a new video player version of their iPod since 2005, despite the update to the 5G iPod in 2006. Here’s the low down," ViM3 reports.

According to ViM3, Apple's iPhone will feature:

• More memory than 4GB and 8GB
• User Replacable Battery
• Wireless N Support
• Software - variation of iWork
• iTunes Streaming
• iTunes Store - download using Wi-Fi internet or if you have internet service through your carrier (AT&T in the USA).
• Price / AT&T Service Plans - rebate with a 2-year contract and special iPhone plans from AT&T.

"With just a few more weeks left to iPhone launch, we shall see what else Steve has to show off. Steve is set to go over these new features and a wrap up of the iPhone at the beginning of WWDC.," ViM3 reports.

May 29, 07 - 04:27 pm Comment from: Georgy Porgy

Let's not get too excited now and disappointed later. If the iPhone got even half these extra features, we should be super happy. This appears more like a wish list. I do expect some sort of iWork, though, as Apple can write quality software fast and there is no reliance on AT&T;in that area. My biggest skepticism of the iPhone is AT&T;getting it right, not Apple getting it right.

May 29, 07 - 04:32 pm Comment from: AP

Hmm. I see the iPhone premiering with these specs:

Screen size: 3.5 inches
Screen resolution: 320 by 480 at 160 ppi
Input method: Multi-touch
Operating system: OS X
Storage: 4GB or 8GB
GSM Quad-band (MHz: 850, 900, 1800, 1900)
Wireless data Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) + EDGE + Bluetooth 2.0
Camera 2.0 megapixels
Battery Up to 5 hours Talk / Video / Browsing Up to 16 hours Audio playback
Dimensions 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches / 115 x 61 x 11.6mm
Weight 4.8 ounces / 135 grams

Also I believe the price point is $499 for the 4 GB model and $599 for the 8 GB model. There will be no subsidy as said by AT&T;and Apple since Macworld. As for a special plan, well that's up to AT&T;to decide, it is their network. They can either rip off people or actually have a good plan. My guess is rip people off only because it is cell phone company. I havent seen an honest one yet. I said this before and I'll say it again; the only thing holding back the iPhone is the primitive U.S. cell phone system, which is considered a joke anywhere else in the world. But it makes some fat white man alot of money so it must be the best system out there.

May 29, 07 - 04:42 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

So maybe where we're really going is, (and this would explain Apples apparent slowness in getting a major upgrade to the iPod out before now): Apple is going to produce just iPhones - the iPhone is or will be the next gen. iPod.

May 29, 07 - 04:42 pm Comment from: AL

I agree with AP. Remember, it is not ATT, it is SBC. SBC only changed the name. They have horrible service, and very overpriced rates for their other products. Cingular/ATT/SBC is the same company. They will not pass on the savings from not having a subsidy on the the phone to the consumers. Their CEO's and execs need their bonuses and their Golden Parachute. SBC needs to recover its cost of buying ATT. This is one way they will do so.

There will be no discounted rate. There may be a SPECIAL iPhone service plan, which will be 1) cheap introductory rate for a month, but be very expensive in the long run; 2) REQUIRED to buy an iPhone.

Does it come complete with an overcoat?

May 29, 07 - 04:45 pm Comment from: ballonknot@mac.com

I know it's unlikely, but what if the reason for the iLife/iWork delay is iPhone versions of both suites? OK, I'm not about to write a document of put together a presentation on a phone, but for some reason people always bitch about there not being a mobile version of word on the phone as one of their 'it won't be successful' reasons.

Still, if it were possible to just hook up my iPhone to a projector to give a presentation, it would be wicked cool.

MDNMW: Income, as in, this phone stands to increase mine in spite of the initial cost.

Awesome if true, and it doesn't sound outlandish.

BUT.

I, for one, will not hope for it, lest I be disappointed. Lalalalala I can't hear your rumors of heroine-like iPhones.

i was thinking the other day with having 20 gb worth of songs/video... why would I want to buy a 4 gb or an 8gb iphone. might wait for next revision.. and then came this...

i have a feeling they will bump the memory of these models to 10 and 15 gb..

May 29, 07 - 04:57 pm Comment from: January 24, 1984

Almost certainly, Steve will double the stated memory at the outset...."always under-promise, and over-deliver."

May 29, 07 - 05:05 pm Comment from: Crabapple

@

Have you seen the keynote presentation of the iphone?

May 29, 07 - 05:09 pm Comment from: SicMX

Somehow i doubt all of that will be added. There might be something Jobs is holding back to pleasantly surprise everyone, but that lists seems unrealistic.

I'm personally hoping for 16gb memory and iTunes Store

May 29, 07 - 05:31 pm Comment from: ralph from berlin

too sad it is only a wish list. would be nice but apple will stick to the features it promised. and no way there will be any mentioning of the iPhone at WWDC besides maybe a developer-kit for iPhone apps. all of it would be fantastic but only wishful thinking, i guess.

RUMOR: Apple iPhone to feature larger flash memory, more features than expected

Whatever. Just ship the damn thing already.

Although, IMO, being able to include "more features than expected" in a 1.0 release makes better PR than an emasculated first-effort people can't wait to replace.

May 29, 07 - 05:49 pm Comment from: M.T. Wence

anyone know how practical the 'more memory' rumor is? do we have any idea what quantities of 16gb flash mem is going for, if Apple could procure and not affect the retail price?

May 29, 07 - 05:56 pm Comment from: Connor MacBook

A Keynote Player would be a revolution in boardrooms!

May 29, 07 - 05:57 pm Comment from: ken1w

I thought perhaps Apple would increase the storage size with the actually released model. 4 and 8GB seemed way to low for what is essentially a true "video" iPod. I like the replaceable battery rumor; I think that is likely, since most mobile phones have replaceable batteries so it is an expectation. Being able to buy songs and other media from the iTunes Store directly from the device would be THE killer feature. It opens the "iPod" to music-loving people who do not like using computers... HUGE.

May 29, 07 - 06:00 pm Comment from: Farlo

If true, none of these rumors are terribly surprising.

RUMOR: I heard it will debut alongside a revolutionary new CD adapter that slips into your car stereo, receives data via WIFI and then writes the data onto a spinning thread that a CD laser can read...

May 29, 07 - 07:02 pm Comment from: Steven - Hold up on the pathetic US carriers talki

While the carriers "appear" behind the game, lets take a look at this.

Australia: Small country of users. Two main cities, great coverage in those areas, then the desert - nodda. Very easy to upgrade systems quickly.

EU: Some carriers cover the netherlands, and another the baltics, while others Britian and the large "leadership" countries. But there are not four carriers in Europe that cover the entire continent. It is more fragmented than that.

Asia: Much of Asia has no regulations, restrictions and no legacy data systems to keep upgrading. A company - or a communist government - wants to put a tower in your living-room, you're gonna hava a tower in the living-room. Live with it, or we could use a few good kidney's, take your pick.

US: Private companies, not funded by government (and thus higher inneficient use of tax dollars), trying to cover an area that dwarfs Europe in size, and yet four main carriers have done it. ATT, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile. We have towers on stick roads in the deserts, in the mountains and to the coast. The infastructure costs in the US to handle what 300 million of us expect - all throughout the country - is demanding, and yet the carriers have done it.

Yes, they over-charge, run too many commercials (which is where a nice chunk of your monthly's go), and are lousy with the customer. Still, despite the drawbacks, they have done a pretty decent job - all four - getting what they have in place nationwide.

May 29, 07 - 07:27 pm Comment from: lbuschjr

• More memory than 4GB and 8GB
Doubtful, as the hardware specs would have needed to be finalized for FCC approval months in advance.

• User Replacable Battery
Possible, but again, involves hardware changes.

• Wireless N Support
Easily added via software update.

• Software - variation of iWork
Possible, since iWork has been delayed with OS X.5.

• iTunes Streaming
Won't happen. Steve is dead set on purchase model. The network simply couldn't handle streaming of all those new iPhone users at 2.5G.

• iTunes Store - download using Wi-Fi internet or if you have internet service through your carrier (AT&T;in the USA).
Very possible, although I don't understand why it would have to be restricted to AT&T;internet services.

• Price / AT&T;Service Plans - rebate with a 2-year contract and special iPhone plans from AT&T;.
No way. AT&T;will sell every iPhone they can get at full retail price, with no rebates/special plans needed.

My thoughts for some possible additions:

1. GPS ties with Google Maps
2. 3G network (steps down to 2.5G if 3G not available)
3. Various apps available, or developer approval cycle established to get apps available.
4. "Made for iPhone" accessories

i wonder..... could Apple use the phone to replace the pod? what will the eventual cost difference be? how many sales will they give up if they do? how big a memory space will the phone need to make this reasonable?

I too have wondered that, and I believe definitely it could replace the Video iPod, (or become the same line,) but not the nano

May 29, 07 - 11:14 pm Comment from: alexr

the user replaceable battery rumor could be true....anyone ever wonder why the bottom of the phone is black (on the back)? battery access?

May 30, 07 - 12:37 am Comment from: Pro Buddy

Sounds more like that this is what Apple product managers wanted to include in iPhone but could not: carrier and other requirements held all these back.

The weirdest of all is the omission of replaceable battery - that's probably coming from Apple industrial design team.

Some of these may pop up in future versions and most likely other markets than U.S.

May 30, 07 - 12:44 am Comment from: TheConfuzed1

I work as a sales manager at a car dealership. Just yesterday, we sold a vehicle to an Apple tech.

We had the following conversation:

Me: I know that you can't really talk about it, but I wonder if you could just validate an opinion of mine...
His wife: The iPhone...
Me: Actually, no. I was going to ask about something else. I'm going to buy a Mac Mini for my son's birthday next month. My thought is that it would be a good idea to wait until after the WWDC keynote. Would you agree with that thought.
Tech: (Smiling) Yes, I agree.
Me: I figure it's due for the Core 2 Duo.
Tech: I agree.
Me: And since you brought it up, do you know the date for the release of iPhone?
Tech: Not really, but the rumor is June 20.
Me: I will be buying two, the moment it is released. I would love to be able to consolidate to just one unit, but with only 8 GB, I will have to keep both an iPhone, and my iPod.
Tech: Yeah, well I wouldn't buy an iPod just yet either. I mean... Not that a new one is coming soon or anything, but it is due for a redesign as well. As far as the iPhone, I would like to see 16 and 32 GB models.

Now, I realize that these are only rumors, but if true, this conversation really seems to have some information between the lines. smile

May 30, 07 - 01:44 am Comment from: mugwump

Heck, I'm not an Apple tech, and I also agree that you should wait until after WWDC for the mini purchase. I also agree that it's due for the Core 2 Duo, in fact, way overdue.

i took the iTunes streaming to mean that when you're in your house or around any itunes you can stream music from that to your iPhone to listen to it without having to fill up your phone with the songs themselves.

Sounds great to me

KVM has announced they are working on 32gig USB sticks (the 16gig is available now) so it's possible the phone could have at least 16gig. And laptops without moving harddrives are definatly coming, at least next year if not sooner.

Almost certainly, Steve will double the stated memory at the outset...."always under-promise, and over-deliver."

"Within 12 months, we will be at 3GHz," Jobs said. "Believe me, this architecture has legs."

The G5 NEVER got to 3 GHz (as a single processor or single core) in the PowerMac. Debate all you want about whose fault it was that the 3 GHz G5 never came... but bottom line... Jobs looks like a clown 3 years later when there STILL was no 3 GHz G5.

Jobs may have thought back on that and decided too keep the specs low... and also keep the competition (MS) on their toes and 10 steps back (as always).

The Dude abides.

and if Apple would allow developers to write programs for the iPhone, and especially open up the phone API, life could become wonderfull.
First thing to write for the iPhone: group policies, to enable iPhone users to decide who can contact them now, and who should be switched over to the voice mail.

May 30, 07 - 09:30 am Comment from: Krioni

"death kneel"

So, they have to bow down before Apple, and then get killed anyway? Yikes.
